The writers had written Shiro as dead by the end of season 2, but the executives wanted him alive and still part of the main plot to sell toys. So either they said no and probably got fired, or changed the script to please them. Guess what they did.

Unfortunately, the writers didn't do a lot of those things voluntarily. If you don't want corporate executives to wreck your pacing and character arcs, you pretty much have to be an indie artist. Which is financially infeasible for a lot of creatives, with the bonus that barely anyone will ever actually see what you make.

...poor Shiro. The show gives him all of the worst suffering, and now even the fans wish him dead. I love Space Dad, so I respectfully disagree. Keith NEVER wanted to be a leader. He said it early on, and he showed it for the rest of the show. Shiro being alive had nothing to do with homeboy not wanting it and not being good at it.

I've personally never bought into the "Kosmo replaces Shiro" theory, and still don't, but idek at this point. Any trust I had in what I thought was the creators' vision and intentions is gone. And their lack of statement, when they were so quick to do so after season 7, makes it hard for me to even WANT to trust them anymore. At least Kosmo is a fluffy good boy. It's what he deserves :(

Agreed, I remember when i'd see the trailer for a new season I'd cry out of excitement along with my older sister. I haven't watched season 8 yet but I don't think I'm ever going to, allura was one of my favorite characters and to hear that she died kinda shattered the whole show for me. It's really sad for the people who were there from day 1

Sad thing too is, deaths in cartoons can TOTALLY work... but only through clever writing. If done wrong, it not only means nothing, but ends up as game-changingly super-detrimental.

@Perla Jara But the thing is, she didn't have to go. She's not real. She's a fictional character. The writers could have ended her story in any number of ways. They could have let her gain something after already losing and sacrificing so much--they even went out of their way to have Lance and his family accept her, only to take it away from her. If they were just going to kill her off anyway, there was no need to tease the hope of gaining something to her or to us. They KNEW that letting her live and be happy and get to participate in the peace she fought so hard to achieve was an option. There was NO need to kill her other than being cruel just for the sake of it. She only "had to go" because they purposefully wrote her to be self-sacrificing and sad . The creators had the power to give her dignity and simply choose not to. She and Shiro both experienced loss and trauma, and had their suffering exploited for Da Plot. They never got to keep any accomplishment they gained. Shiro didn't get to keep his job as the captain of the Atlas. Allura always blames herself for shit that isn't her fault. She didn't get to keep her status as the princess even after her people and HER PLANET were brought back. Instead, Shiro got demoted yet again and Allura got killed off in the most insulting way possible. Lance doesn't "keep going" after her death. This was a character who loved the spotlight and is so thoroughly ruined and broken by Allura's death that he spends the rest of his life on a FARM?? This is the same guy who thrived doing public performances of the Voltron Show. That doesn't tell me "death can't hold you back." It tells me that if you suffer, then that there's no point in trying to keep going, because it won't get better. You're either miserable and have your dreams/accomplishments taken from you, or you just die. Allura's death wasn't an inspiring, uplifting sacrifice. It was a cheap, lazy attempt at being ~deep~. There was so much more she could have lived for that would have made the ending 1000 times more meaningful and inspiring, and kept it in line with what the previous seasons' "message" was. These characters spent the whole series yelling about never giving up and the power of friendship, so why did it have to end with Allura dead and the rest of them splintered, barely even working together as colleagues anymore? Why couldn't she even say goodbye to Coran, her second father figure, before being fridged? Why was the loss of the Castle of Lions more satisfactory and bittersweet than the loss of ONE OF THE MAIN CHARACTERS? If anything should have been sacrificed, it should have been the Lions. And we all know the only reason that didn't happen is because they have to sell toys. It's shallow. And if the show had always been just a shallow, glorified toy commercial, then it wouldn't be so upsetting. But it didn't used to to be. It used to have actual heart.

I'm finding this painful too, I wanted to see Shiro use his Bayard. I didn't get why people say the wolf was meant to be Shiro, but with this video it now makes sense. To think of what we could have missed out on... I like the wolf, but he did always feel like an add on.

It also makes sense how it is possible that the wolf seems to only do something useful in Times where there is no Keith in a Lion( Not at the beginning (exspecialy when it is true that Shiro only a little bit later got His Lion Back) i mean later exspecialy season 8), because in those scenes, If Shiro was the black paladin, Shiro wouldn't be able to help because he had to fly the lion. I mean any time Keith is in the later parts in a Lion this wolf doesn't seem to be useful (hello he could litteraly teleport for example Shiro who wasn't in a Lion (thanks to the Show Runner, what a brilliant idea that was🙄)inside the ememys ships. But i could be wrong with my memories there, didn't watch anything after season 4 more than one time when it aired ( which for me perfectly shows the quality of the Show)

I actually like that a character can be gay without advertising it all the time. No one would say here would be an issue if he had a girlfriend and never showed any romantic inclinations so why is that standard applied to gay relationships? Being gay shouldn’t define a character, it’s just a small part of them.

People are amazing! I didn't come up with the cut-and-paste theories myself; they came from a combination of the people I mentioned (Janestrider, Ptw30, letstalkaboutmanga, the list goes on...) and an anonymous fan. My job with this was just compiling and organizing everything, and finding as much confirmation as I could from interviews!

I'm one of the only people that shipped klance but didn't hate the show due to it not making them a couple. That show was cool until the story got weird and kinda weak , predictable is what I'm trying to say

Looking back, I think I only loved these characters as much as I did because of 1) the fan works (Those people are mad talented and do what the show couldn't) and 2) the potential. Everyone had the potential to be great and nuanced, and they'd write them so that they'd show hints of that potential. There were so many missed opportunities or things that just didn't meet expectations. Dropped story beats and the whole shebang. I sincerely think the fanfictions clouded my judgment but I couldn't know because there's no way I can erase my memories of them and rewatch the show :/ Honestly, I still love the show, it gave me so much inspiration and actually was a heavy inspiration for my dream of becoming an animator, for me getting more heavy into art and storytelling, it led me to some amazing friends and ended up being responsible for so much good in my life. Also, I have the red and blue lion figurines balanced on my monitor, I'm essentially obligated to love it XD

I wasn't following the show for its potential. I really liked what the show delivered in the first six seasons. Before the seventh season, the show was what I wanted it to be (and it didn't completely stray from what I wanted until season eight).

Nicole Yan Yeah, I thought Allura was a bit overpowered too. The rest of the team are similar in their physical abilities, but each have their own personal strengths, like intelligence, diplomacy, leadership, sharpshooting/kindness(?). Then there’s Allura, who is the only one who can create wormholes, can shapeshift, and can use alchemy/magic, AND she’s the pilot of the blue lion. Plus, like one of them said at some point, she basically caught up to the rest of the team skill-wise after like one or two episodes.

them making allura OP annoyed me so much, like do they know they can make a strong female character without overpowering them? make them more realistic. Media in general think a strong females characters means making them a mary tsue. I like her powers related to her altean blood but the rest were unnecessary, and the ones she unlocked in the blue lion after two episodes of piloting it (meaning the bond was still weak and how tf she did that before lance who had a stronger connection? hello?)

If anything got close to him the Sincline mech would kill it, yet when the Sincline had a clear shot to kill a paladin, it doesn’t take the shot. LaMissa1 except Shiro had a story to tell as well. The story wasn’t messed up because Shiro was around. It got messed up because the writers didn’t know how to properly write his story. Since season 2 Keith’s leadership arc was messed up because it was never set up properly. Having Shiro say that Keith would lead if something happened isn’t a set up to a leadership arc, especially when Allura had more leadership abilities and capabilities than he did. Not to mention the fact that Shiro’s bonding with the black lion as well as taking the black Bacardi from Zarkon wouldn’t have been a thing. But they did, and that’s the problem for Keith’s leadership arc. Shiro as a character added way more than Keith did, as another character who has also been affected by the galra, but more intimately than Allura, in that Shiro was tortured and experimented on, and he lost an entire year of his life, along with having ptsd. That makes for a far more interesting character than half of the cast right there.

Homez18 I agree! I always disliked the whole lion swapping. Why would Keith specifically be the leader? Because Shiro knew him best? That’s the only reason I can think of.

Homez18 Shiro certainly did have a story to tell. All well-developed characters do, just like real people. The problem though was that they weren’t planning on Shiro being there and had already gone ahead with season 2 and 3 without him in the works, and in order to save time and money, they did what they had to to fit him in. Throwing a character you weren’t planning on being there would be a hard task, and they did well enough, but they wouldn’t have had to tackle that difficultly had the executives just let them do the story the way they originally intended. Have you seen the original Voltron? Keith is the leader, so I think they were trying to stay true to that original story. I’m curious what they were planning on doing and how Keith would have developed and changed to become a good leader. Shiro coming back would have been fine, but I am disappointed it was so soon. Not only did it undermine Keith rising up to be the head of Voltron (which is a nod to the originals and completely where the writers were trying to go), but it also made Shiro’s “death” less of an impact. We’ll never know if Keith as a character would have added way more because we’ll never get the original story that the writers were meaning to tell. I personally would love to know what they were planning to do all long and how different the story ended up being. All in all, they did do a good job fitting him back in there, since they had to. Also, that awesome scene with Keith and clone Shiro fighting possibly never would have happened, so that’s a plus to Shiro coming back. My big point though is that not staying true to the direction they had meant to go and what they had intended to do was what started the mess. Trusting those who have the vision and the heart invested into the work is probably the best thing for any show or movie to succeed. It’s why Pixar has created such beauties. And also why, when Disney took them over and made them produce a movie every year, we got stuff like Cars 2 and The Good Dinosaur. From the way I see it, when people start to worry about money, merchandise, giving the fans what they want instead of doing what you had intended, then you start to lose your quality and there’s more chance for messes like this to have to fix up and eventually leads to disasters like season 8.

@@LaMissa1 no they didn't do a good job. Season 3 up until season 6 shiro was a clone, and the clone added absolutely nothing to anything. Then in season 7 & 8 he was sidelined as a secondary character. I care nothing for the original voltron because in this reboot, they didnt follow the original from the start.

They were trying to take elements from the original that they liked and put them into something new. I wanted Shiro to be there with them since I always thought he had a deep connection and bond with the black lion. I wanted everyone to bond with their lions the same way Shiro did. It would've been way more interesting

As a former foujoshi I can confirm that they can be very toxic , I mean like *VERY* TOXIC, If you ask a sane and chill foujoshi she can confirm that, and I had a few encounters with these toxic shits, they are pretty awful, I understand why they wanted to get rid of the fandom, since i have been in some myself, being in these toxic fandoms made me hate any form of BL/YAOI after I used to love them, I am not homophobic either, two guys or two girls can be together they can do what they want,and I don't judge them, I just hate how these toxic girls are portraying then, that's why I am never reading or watching anything that has BL in it.

You really spot on with Pidge, beyond for family the writers had no growth for her, I really think other characters like Lance were not given other chance to shine because there's this idea that comic relief characters should only be funny and don't need character arcs, a lot of cartoons are facing this problem.

I share almost the same exact sentiments. I may watch it again for the 2 Voltron fics I am working on, one a cross-over the other a story on how Kosmo responded to the aftermath of Season-7. But being a fan from the very original series, I need to be in the mood to watch the series for entertainment which has yet to happen in the year it ended. I do want to get both the digital copies on Vudu and physical copies of the series to add it to my shelf for favorite Anime series, but so much harm was done to a series that had so much potential, I'm not ready to watch it again.

Kids comitting suicide, murder suicide, graphic beheadings and eyes jumping out of eye sockets, a funeral for Danmari, torture...and a catchy opening song that makes you want to blow your brains out because its cheery tone has nothing to do with the gorey shit the actual show is. Golion was a fucking masterpiece.

I guess this is why Gundam is still successful, they seem to be the only ones who can reliably write a mecha story without it falling flat on its face during the final arc. Knight's & magic was a decent anime, its only issue it that its narrative was paced at a dead sprint all the way through.

As I'm saying that... I don't think they really took a big, obvious, open stance when it came to the details/shippers, in these videos. (If that helps? 😅)

Hallo! I'm finishing up the second video at the moment, and there's a *runs to check* four-minute segment on Lance after I talk about Keith (granted, a good portion of that is clips from the show). I also return to him briefly at the end. I just...feel like this poor guy never got the chance to really embrace himself. He experienced a couple growth moments across the course of the show, but those lessons were often undone only an episode or two later...It made his development seem unreal, so that when Keith told Lance he knew who he was in S8E1 it rang (at least to me) really hollow. If they wanted us to believe Lance got over his insecurities through his connection to his friends, I feel like they needed to make his friendship with the other paladins more believable. As it is, Hunk and Pidge seem to gang up on him unfairly, Keith chooses him on Bob's gameshow so he doesn't have to "spend eternity with [him]," and Allura dies right after they finally come together. That, and Lance's relationship with Red never seems as strong as Keith's. It really makes his story...upsetting, to me. I wish I believed he found support in the end.

And secondly, I totally agree, when season 8 came out I was seriously bummed (I also made the mistake of watching it at school...) when I saw Allurance I was so disappointed because it felt so forced, and then at the end when they throw Altean lance at us, I just felt... kinda cheated. I put my all in this show and I was so excited for S8. Overall I felt it just didn’t add up, and I’m very, very happy, that someone actually realized that it might not be LM and JDS being homophobic or something. You actually took in the fact that show business isn’t always very on track, my mom is a VFX supervisor, my dad, a effects guy (like explosions) and my cousin trying to get into the business. I understand more than most about how it works, and I’m so happy someone finally brought that up. Thank you!!

LGBT shiro was planned from the beginning just with him dying. Allura's death was probably planned from the beginning as the Arusians mistook her to be a Lion Goddess- to what she became, so probably foreshadowing. Apart from the wedding, which was also not people wanted, nothing was what the fans hoped for. It was all Executive meddling. OLd out of touch people not having a clue what would be popular or how artistic work goes. SO many movies and tv shows are fucked up by them. Making directors to change their story because they think it could make more money, thus screwing up the story.

@@maan7715 lgbt shiro wasnt planned bex confirmed this. It was only added later on. There is audio found with Adam saying shiro is his roommate. That shows that Josh recorded more than one take for that scene. LM and JDS didn't care for shiros and wanted him dead before s1 ended. He was choosen as gay rep so that Klance doesn't happen since they wanted allurance. You don't declare a character gay after 7 seasons if you planned for it since the beginning. That shows the decision was rushed to please lgbt fans which ruined shiros story. His arc got uncompleted. I don't think allura death was planned. It was foreshadowed but not planned. Allura was killed off so any sequal would die. This is because of the uproar from fans quiting the show after s7 so they knew people wouldn't stick around. You can see what isn't planned by the writers by how abrupt things were in the series.

@@Thesilentvoice... They said he was planned to have Adam early on, but he was kept alive, so the flashbacks were put in in s7. However, it was not clear dreamworks will let them use it explicitly, so they recorded two different lines. I heard the other version on netflix which was left in the audio description version. THe stroyboard artists said they were surprised as he was indeed planned as gay, in his original iteration, with the flashback, but after bringing him back, they had no idea it will be included or not. Also, that was the point in the gay revelation, that it was not anything special, just part of his character. ALso how did that ruin his arc? he had no arc, he was not even supposed to be alive, he was brought back to pander to young boys who would then buy their cheap shiro toys.

@@maan7715 shiro did have a arc in s1 and s2 with earning the black lion trust from Zarkon. Did you not watch s1 and s2? He wasn't supposed to be around long but he did have a story arc. He had more than Lance and Hunk for a character who was supposed to die and had no arc. Shiro being gay wasnt planned bex said she faught alongside LM and JDS for lgbt shiro. Like I said if you plan something you would put it at the start not afterwards. You can put lgbt content in cartoons now it's been done in Steven universe etc. There's no excuse for how it was done. If they planned lgbt shiro they would fight for it to be in s1 not 7 seasons later. I'm not a lgbt person so it doesn't affect me but it ruins the story when things are done quickly without planning. We can see it.

@@Thesilentvoice... BEx fought to INLCUDE the planned Adam flashback. Other people who worked on the show confirmed that too. Problem is as the executives looked at it as a toy marketing show for boys, so they felt lgbt ,even if subtle, properly done is risky. And most other shows only have lesbian relationships, as it's easier to do that. THe gravity falls creator said how hard he had to fight to include one little hint in his own show. Adventure time had kind of a buildup, but had to wait until the last episode. Legend of korra was the same. But they were talking a lot about how it's different now, they can do more, etc, that's why this shipping hell happened, as people were certain that lance and keith's relationship is a buildup for a subtle, natural lgtb subplot. (and others thought shiro and keith, I personally didn't think that as we knew shiro was supposed to die anyway. ) So when people thought there's a slow buildup, others said it's forced. WHen there was only a last minute mention, its also forced. How on Earth can it be done then? I'm personally lgbt, and I hoped, really hoped to see something more meaningful just once.I don't want gays in everything. But I felt they are doing something thought out this time. They weren't. If they kept Shiro alive, apart from the lgbt thing, they should've give him more bonding with the team, all the friendships fell apart last season.

(something ghibli does frequently to let their animators get their ideas out there.) It is however based on a book by the name of “I Can Hear the Sea” by Saemo Himuro. That book is followed by a sequel so perhaps you saw that?

Normal ending was at the final episode of Season 7. Everything after like pack of equal white Robeasts, Allura's death and final "extinction" of lions was stupid. And gay-Shiro. In such a way they could make him a vegan, a one-arm-born or even Allura's father's reincarnation.

Except executive meddeling not planning ahead is normal for story. What your asking for is the oddity.

I'm convinced that Lotor would've gone down the same path as Zarkon in that he'd attempt to get more and more quintessence to the point that it'd twist his mind and he would've gone on a genocidal rampage across the universe, only it would've been against the Galra. Hell, he kinda pretty much confessed to it near his end. So no, it's idiotic to think that this was a "happy ending" at that point.

Not necessarily, if they had worked with the restrictions instead of trying to cram a gritty war story in a kids cartoon about friendship it probably would have been fine.

floawts for some reason I hated that Space Wolf. It was such an annoying and pointless character. Those writers should’ve just euthanize the goddamn thing though. ARGH!
