Imagine being the guy whose invention saved 329000 lives
@allangibson2408
@allangibson2408 2 года назад
And it was based on research by the US Airforce - Dr John Paul Stapp was behind it in the 1950’s. He showed that a restrained human body was able to survive over 46 g decelerations with only minor recoverable injuries following a crash stop from Mach 1 (by doing it himself).
@gtraqs_
@gtraqs_ 2 года назад
Especially noteworthy is that volvo decided to share the invention with the world, rather than patent it for themselves.
@npip99
@npip99 2 года назад
I don't think it's fair to attribute every life between 1960 and 2012, to that one inventor. Had he not invented it, someone else would have within the decade. So maybe he saved thousands of lives by doing it sooner, but not 329k.
@masterraceofeverything4504
@masterraceofeverything4504 2 года назад
@@allangibson2408 i don't know about that but they might have just tested for themselves but dint contribute anything! other than just numbers that were already in mind of Volvo enginer. 3 point seat belts were already in affect before test and were already showing life saving capabilities, i don't think that test taken or not would have changed anything.
@allangibson2408
@allangibson2408 2 года назад
@@masterraceofeverything4504 The justification for three point belts came out of the work by John Paul Stapp on the basis that you can drive a 1960’s era car head on into a wall at 55mph and survive if you are wearing a seatbelt that restrains you from hitting some other object in the car. Three points is the minimum that mostly achieves this. John Stapp developed the prototype for this in 1952 but his had a web panel between the shoulder and waist. The US standard airbag is a response to people not wearing the fitted seatbelts. The downside of US specification airbags is they are known to kill drivers and front seat passengers smaller than the 20% percentile (mostly women and children) if they are within arms reach of the airbags (ie driving the car). Everywhere else on the planet designs airbags as a “supplemental restraint system” (the SRS on the bag covers) to be used in addition to rather than instead of seat belts.

Really surprised they don't use LIDAR for pin point accuracy of area of an accident. I was half expecting to see a display of the accident like that slow motion animation at the end of the video. To understand the depth of how far an impact will hit and how to prevent those deeper impacts I would think would be part of the goal. Especially if you can slow momentum and decrease the velocity of each impact. Not being an engineer myself, I could definitely be wrong but just seems logical to kill those two things and accidents to the passengers will cease or be limited

While I do appreciate Volvo for inventing the three point seat belt and subsequently saving so many lives, when it comes to overall crash protection and injury prevention, I’m a little more skeptical. In 1995, when the Volvo 850 was tested by the IIHS, its structure was rated Acceptable, while the Ford Taurus and Chevrolet Lumina of the same year had structures rated Good. When the first-gen Volvo S40 was tested in 2002, the dummy measured a possible broken right ankle, while the dummy in the 2002 Subaru Impreza measured no significant injury risk. The same applies to the second-gen S40 and first gen S60, injury risk present in front and/or side crashes while other makes outperformed them. Even as recent as 2021, the XC40 only managed an Acceptable overall rating in the updated IIHS side crash test, scoring a Marginal for structure and pelvis injury risk, while the Mazda CX-5 received a Good overall rating. Volvo may have never made a poor performing vehicle in a front/side crash test, but aside from their performance in the recent small overlap tests, where the S80/XC90 had models from 2003/2007 scoring Good, they have never really stood apart from other brands when it comes to crash test results. They were either matched or beaten by vehicles from other manufacturers.
