Today we discuss the reasons behind how we chose our 26-year-old motorhome for full-time RV living.
When we first decided we wanted to get on the road and do travel physical therapy, we thought the RV lifestyle was something we'd enjoy and would be the perfect solution for our housing situation. We started our search with an awesome picture of a nice big truck pulling a beautifully renovated fifth wheel in our heads, but were quickly snapped back to reality.......we didn't have nice big truck money.
That's when, one evening as we scrolled through used RVs on Facebook Marketplace, we came across a 1994 Fleetwood Bounder Class-A motorhome. We hadn't considered motorhomes due to reasons at the end of this video, but the price was way cheaper than the truck and trailer combo we were looking for. So within a week, we bought Big Betty the Bounder and began this crazy RV life (all filmed on RU-vid).

My 02 Damon is in for a Makeover right now. I'll get it back in about another week. When I get it back it will be a 2021 Damon. At least on the outside after $4300 worth of pretty. Everything else is perfect. It's the last thing I will ever own and worth the money spent. Within the next month I'm gone. I'm bailing out of California before it totally slips away and go see a few things before I go. Happy Trails...

What a great video. How often will you guys post? I am a first time watcher and I just subscribed. I totally agree with you on being patient and waiting for a used RV in good shape. That is what my wife and I did. It took us 10 months, but we finally found Lady Dye. She is a 2006 Monaco Dynasty. She is a 42' Class A diesel pusher. Fortunately we are retired and live at the beach in south west Florida. We enjoy traveling part time. We love heading out and just seeing what's over the next hill. Traveling in a motorhome is super nice. Once you move all of your clothes and stuff in you are pretty much done. A little cleaning up and putting away and we are ready to travel. At rest stops we don't have to put out a slide or make sure there is enough room to put the stairs out to get to the bathroom or kitchen. There is never again a dirty gas station or fast food restaurant bathroom. The bathroom in our RV is always clean and sanitized. If we are between destinations we can even stay the night for free in a parking lot. We flat tow a Lincoln MKX. I can unhook in under a minute. Then we can go out to eat on travel days if we want. You definitely can't unhook a fifth wheel or travel trailer. I highly recommend traveling in a motorhome. Safe travels and I hope you post again soon.

Howdy there, I gotcha beat price wise on an older Class A. I found a 1991 22 foot long Fleetwood Flair with only 18,000 original miles on it, and just 79 hours of run time on the onboard Onan 4000 Watt Generator. There total price I am paying for it is $2,500.00. It needs both belts on the engine replaced, a couple tires also need replacing, and the roof needs a good seal coating done. On the inside, it needs one set of Overhead Cabinets repaired.. Outside of that, it's ready to go.

Congrats on your rig and your good decision making! We just found your channel. We are retired FTers who did something similar in 2019. We feel our 1999 National Tropical MH we named Serinity (after the movie/TV series) sort of picked us too. Like you, we were going to go FT with a truck and trailer. We bought a 2008 Ford diesel and were shopping for a trailer when the engine died on the truck. We had just got it paid off when it dropped a lifter (at less than 150,000 miles on this supposedly 1/2 a million-mile engine) and they wanted $15k to fix it. We got to thinking, "What if this would have happened after we were retired and didn't have that kind of money laying around to fix it? So, we sold it and bought our 36' Class A MH with only 28k miles on it for only $15k. It was a single owner MH, like your rig, with meticulous maintenance and repair records. Our decision paid off as it hasn't needed many repairs (considering its age) over the last 3 years we have been living in it FT. If the V-10 gas engine ever dies, we can replace it for less than 1/3rd of what the diesel engine would have cost us on our old Ford. One of he added benefits of our decision was we were able to flat tow our 30+ mpg 2006 Chevy Cobalt SS, a car we already owned, saving us additional expenses for a toad. We also carry a couple electric bikes with us, for exercise, adventure and fuel savings. We discovered we like to boondock a lot, so added solar. We have been living off-grid continuously for the last year, saving a ton of money on RV park rent, while still being able to travel whenever and wherever we like. Good luck and stay safe on your travels.

@@brittanymcdonaldbarr1106 Wow, that's a great deal if it's in good shape. Heck, it's even a good deal if you have to fix a few things. We love our 6350. We've gotten good at fixing things. When you don't have a monthly note, you can afford to do other things with that money - like the 560ah Lifepo-4 battery, 80a converter/charger and battery to battery charger we just added to our solar system to make boondocking easier and reduce our generator run time. We've got about 2,500 hrs on our 5,500 w Generac generator now, after boondocking extensively for the last 3 years, but it's still running strong.

EVERY new RV has build issues right out of the factory. You are always going to have something, little or big, that will need to be fixed. If you get an RV a couple years old, most of those build issues should have been fixed and you won't spend six months of your first year with your home in the shop.

Glad you found a nice RV for a great price. Often the old RV's have very low mileage and often not much more repairs as even the new RV's.

I'm in the process of following through on buying a 1996 Class A motorhome similar to your's today. It's all original, needs a little TLC but, appears to be in good condition overall. It's an important point to have a good gut feeling from the people who you're buying from that they're honest and seemingly trustworthy. I like what you said at the end about "there is no perfect RV and that at some point just go for it" which is where I'm at. That nudge of advice is helpful! Really enjoyed your video!! Some genuine practical advice! Take care and safe travels! 👋🇨🇦

Sometimes you gotta go to somebody you know and trust it isn’t about I was actually I had a I found a 1969 Lee liner and it’s it’s a full frame aluminum stove did not work in the shower did not work but I had a toilet and I only used it for a toilet and a bed and then I turned around and bought a brand spanking new 2016 heartland prowler 18 LX for 16,125. That’s what I paid for it and then when you had to add tax title and registration 20,008 80Well it’s also because I paid 290 a month for six years 72 months that’s a pretty good deal

I'm also in healthcare as a RN in ER. I have had two Bounders: a 1995 and currently a 2000. I have loved both of them. The 1995 was a 34J on a P30 chassis with the Chevy 454. My 2000 Bounder is a 34D (with living room slide) on a Ford chassis with the V10. I believe they are a quality RV, even if not the most expensive RVs out there. My 34D is spacious and comfortable. I have done a little renovating, but it is more original than not. Have fun and enjoy the freedom yours will provide !

With any RV (new or used) finding water damage? Yep. Then the asking price goes down from there. The leak in the bath is from the skylight. That is the number 1 spot for a leak. It either gets cracked or the lap sealant around it begins to crack allowing water in. often times not caught right away because it's in the shower which is often already wet.

What stage ? the bing bing bing stage. Class C, class A, what year ? what fuel ? diesel pushers ? Outrageous maintenance and repair costs I have seen... I am thinking 2000 and up....and getting to the point where it probably does not matter much in that 10-20K range. Saw a renovated gas 1999 Holiday Rambler ready to go for 12.5K (May 2023)...tons and tons for sale. Prices still cray cray. Currently have a vw camper van, but would like something a little bigger...not 40 foot bigger, but bigger.

@@RyanMegan I also meant to also say that if it is something like a catastrophic engine or transmission failure, a few thousand it goign to be a lot cheaper than a whole new RV. Even if you replaced both tomorrow, you'd still be cheaper than most other Motorhomes on the market. In other words, I think you made a good choice.

In your experience what has it been like with stipends in regards to housing. Does it cover your cost of your RV parking spot, gas, etc. I would love to know how all that works. Also this was another great video💜
@RyanMegan
@RyanMegan 4 года назад
In our experience, the housing stipend for just one of us is plenty to cover our monthly RV site costs, propane we use, and the electric we're metered. We told our company that we would like to find our own housing (aka RV site) and so they simple pay us the full housing stipend. We plan to do a video fully explaining this soon as there is a lot of details to hash out. Not a comment section quick answer! Haha! Hopefully that helps tho!

Have a 1994 Fleetwood Bounder 28' that I inherited after my dad passed away. Mom and dad bought it new, so we know the full history. I don't think you mentioned the mileage on Big Betty, but ours is sitting right at 51,309 miles. I know because I've got the paperwork sitting here to transfer the title. . . . We've actually put the last 10,000 miles on it over about 7 years. Dad wasn't taking it out for several years before he passed due to poor health. Anyway, enjoyed hearing your viewpoint on why you selected the vehicle. For us it has been a situation where my dad chose it years ago. I doubt that I would have considered a motorhome on my own. My dad pulled a 12' enclosed trailer with it for years. We have that as well, and use it to haul a motorcycle. Also have a home-made bicycle rack that my dad made on the back. Just bought 2 new e-bikes yesterday, so may leave the trailer at home next time we go out. We drove it from Wisconsin out to Portland, Oregon in 2019. Had done recent maintenance on brakes, transmission, radiator (actually all fluids), replaced steer tires, etc. before leaving. Still had a blow-out on inside dual while in Washington. Limped to a shop where we were able to get 4 new drive tires installed by 1pm the next day. So all tires have been replace in the last 2 years. . . . Otherwise it's mostly original. Has that "ugly" 90's look that you all tore out. Have had no leaks or such, but getting nervous watching people putting new roofs on their RVs here on RU-vid, LOL! Will have to go over that when we get it out of storage this year.

$7,500 for that 94 class A is about average price. It's not really a good deal with the water damage and other repairs. I personally would have passed on it for that price, especially with the water damage.
