Thank you. Finally an informative schlumbergera video that I actually learned about habitat and propagation.

Fantastic video of Schlumbergeras in the wild! Also,I'd really like to see how you graft a Schlumbergera to a selenicereus.

We wrote two long articles in the latest EPIG Magazines about the different ways you can graft epifytic cacti. We may put that in video in future. Till then you may become member of the EPIG and buy these two magazines

Great video!!! I just been gifted one of these beauties. Flowering beautifully! Until not long ago segments started coming out of pot I think it was propagated. It still has new buds but I wasn’t sure what to do. Now I will let those cuttings dry out and I’ll report them also moving the rest of plant into a room that will not receive any type of lighting at night. Hope it works. I love seeing how it grows in nature, so much work for one to grow it while in its habitat is unstoppable. Thank you for a beautiful video! 💚💚💚💚💚💚💚

I grow all mine in pure orchid bark...rule of thumb..know where your plants come from, then try to recreate some of that habitat.
@richardfrost416
@richardfrost416 Год назад
This is the soil mix, I use exclusively: Angie's Potting Mix.. 2 part's pumice or perlite. 2 part's Orchiata Orchid bark. Small chips only. 1 part any kind of houseplant potting mixture. This soil mix is a great alternative for preventing rot. Especially, if you are guilty of over-watering, like me. I won't use anything else. I do add a good timed-released fertilizer. I prefer to use Osmocote...it's formula breakdown is 10-10-10. I love the growth and the quality of the bloom's it provides. It's a win-win! Some of my Schlumbergera's are really getting too large for me to handle them very well. I still have my very first Schlumbergera truncata! It's a White Christmas, also. It's big! It's over 2 and a half feet high, and at least 2 feet wide!

Thank you for such an informative video. We often talk about 3 types of schlumbergera, but there are so many more. I was wondering, why is Lutea not a popular source species for hybrids, as it provides a brilliant yellow base that is often rare in schlums?
@Cactusinformation
@Cactusinformation 3 года назад
Hi James. Not many people grow S. lutea, it is still pretty rare around. Next step is to get it to flower, also not always easy. Pollinating with S. lutea has not given me any results. Within Schlumbergera it is a bit of an outsider to me, which may be a cause that until now it was not possible to cross with
@Peleski
@Peleski 3 года назад
@@Cactusinformation I suspected it might be hard to cross. I saw one on ebay yesterday (in Australia) but I believe they take many years to flower. I'm not schooled in hybridising at all, but I enjoy seeing your efforts

You can do first a image 'show' and then on the subtitles and stop the video when you want to read (or the other way around)

what if you do a video and you or somebody else speaks while the video goes? It's called "making a documentary-like video"
@Cactusinformation
@Cactusinformation 7 лет назад
That will only cover one language. Also if i have to change the music (because suddenly it is not as free of charge as it was at some point in time), i will loose the spoken text as well. I had to do that for a couple of videos already or allow for annoying advertisements

I just wonder if you sell some schlumbergera species seedlings or cuttings to the US? I could not find the opuntiodes, lutea, kautsyki, or microsphaerica...Also, I always have problem with root or stem rot. Can you recommend how often to water these plants? I usually water them biweekly in the spring and summer and once a month during fall and winter time. I live in Texas, USA. Thanks so much!!!
@Cactusinformation
@Cactusinformation 8 лет назад
Hi Horton. At the moment we only sell seeds of a number of these species to the US, using the nice Small lots of Seeds Program. Raising from seeds will give you new healthy clones which are easier to grow than the old sometimes virus infected clones that are around. Schlumbergera's are not so difficult in watering, but the roots need air. So you must use a loose mixture that is able to keep a kind of moisture. In our experience only Schlumbergera lutea does not like to dry out for several weeks.

Appreciate it for your help! I am using Miracle gro cactus soil for my S. truncata and buckleyie hybrid! What substrate or soil mix you usually do for your Schlumbergera and is there any difference between 7 species? I see that you use the coconut coir and vermiculite for substrate but coconut coir as I know that will degrade or turn sour soon like peat moss and cause rot! I add more coarse sand to my mix recently and my plant seems to do fine but not sure how they will be later...Just wait to see!!! I am looking for some Schlumbergera seeds. How can I order seeds from you and are you going to ship this time? 😊
@Cactusinformation
@Cactusinformation 8 лет назад
I always use a mixture of good quality coconut coir (fine and coarse), vermiculite (medium and coarse), some volcanic sand. All epifytes grows just fine even de species that are considered difficult. Some Schlumbergera's (like opuntioides, microsphaerica) will also grow in things like pumice and other types of volcanic material
