Beautiful. If awe is the perception that is bigger than us, then it makes sense to state that awe is what enables us to move forward in life. And I always like to say that, as much as I love the scientific method, it is Art and not Science the answer to the human condition. The artists are the real healers of this world.

"True awe raises more questions than it does answers and challenges faith more than confirms it... Awe is when life grants us the chance to think differently and deeper about itself, so that we are not left squandering its gift by languishing it away. Being in awe can make a real mess of our lives by disrupting our certainty about ourselves and the world, but it also enlivens and invigorates our living and can change how we decide to live." - Paul Pearsall

I really like the idea of going into “conflict” with the humility to admit what you don’t know. It does really suck watching this when you have depression, though. Like, the acrobats and the sand artist were incredible, and I know I’m _supposed_ to feel impressed and awed when I watch them, and I logically know that what they’re doing is difficult and takes years and years of dedication and training......but I just don’t feel anything :(

I’m extremely surprised he’s claiming DMN is increased during an awe experience. This recent study suggests the opposite: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/31062899/ I would be surprised if DMN went up, since as far as I know that’s most associated with the perceptual state we usually have and the “default” sense of a big self. I would think awe and its associated “small self” perception would mean less DMN activity.

@DuckieMcduck
@DuckieMcduck 4 года назад
He answered it around 9:57 forward. According to him, the state of awe makes you more social, more curious, less needy for closure. It allows for one to rearrange conflict in the mind to be constructive, rather than self-reinforcing or terminating. I don't see any publications backing any of this up though
@celloafterdark4173

Usually when I watch a ted talk I get a very clear takeaway at the end “incorporate high art into your life, it will inspire awe which will improve the way you feel and handle all things because.....” maybe something like that would have been a nice closer. Something more practical.

It was amazing day! Dive partner Kenny & I have scuba camp at West side San juan Island, pot full of cooking abs, Lin Cod, sea bass,etc. an smell brought people to our camp. We feed 2 great lake wreck divers, than want to see octopus, sharks, we want you to scare the shot out of us! Ok we can do that! So we showed them George (for G. Washington), an octopus at lime kilm that we took visitors to met! George was 14ft 6 in long, we knew, that was one task we were doing for Labs! They did an emergency accent and Kenny an I had to grab fins an bodies for control at depth! Take us to shore! I took them all to shore an motored up to Stuart an Vancouver Island. An Orca killer whale woke me with the sounds of his breath heading toward me, using me as a target an swam right under my 16ft zodiac rubber raft! Give me some thumbs up an ill tell the rest of the story, you already know some, Cool!
