Another great video! I was amazed at how much money could be saved just by making (and sticking to) a weekly meal plan. We reduced our food expenses by over 50% and the left overs are often used for lunch. It’s funny because planning meals actually improved the quality of our meals and lunches.

I loved the 28p shush . Back in 1990 I lived for a week on £3.87 . It sounded impossible to friends who spent more than that in a day . The supermarket that I used has since closed down . I do hope that it wasn't my fault .

If you have a weigh shop packaging free, sometimes you can buy in bulk cheaper. I can get lentils for 12p per 100g. You can do it once a month and you can make a good impact on the environment too. If you have such a place like we do in Newcastle

I love the end where you show the fun of recording. But honestly great advise, I don't always plan for a whole week but at least 2, 3 days ahead so I know it does help. My weekly budget is about £100 for family of 5 and a dog based on mixed veg/meat diet but I know I could do better by planning well ahead.

Depends on your ETHNICITY and HERITAGE. If your are African heritage eating load of fats and meat products are expensive. As an Indian, consuming more Vegetarian food regarding dietary/nutritional needs of one's body. Portion Control and long digestive cycles (slow burn) is the go for (Do some research). Substitution of Food Items can save you more money. Avoid processed and supermarkets but shop in local markets or ethnic shops. COOK more from basic for the family. A bag of flour to make Chapatis costs 1OKg for £7 that last for a Month. Rice 10Kg of 2 Months £18. Potatoes 10Kg £5. Shop 2 times a week for fresh produce. Get a Freezer (Big) and buy bulk when ever or visit Billligsgate for 24 Frozen Tilapia Fish of £25. Adapt to rising food costs. My Food Bill for 4 persons per week on average. £35-£70 - living well and happy. Checking your food bill (4:36)... Hmm - you could do better nutritionally and lowers costs. DO NOT be influenced by the Caucasian diet

Thank you guys, what a great couple you are! I loved the out takes. I’ve come over to you from shoestring Cottage, who I love. My food budget is £100 a week. It includes some meat or fish, dog food, toiletries and household. I meal plan and cook from scratch and we try to eat a more plant based diet. Tell me about your car......it looks expensive! But is it cheap to run? I’m interested in making a switch to electric car.
@TheHumblePenny
@TheHumblePenny 4 года назад
Hi Sally, thanks a lot! 😊. We love Jane too. £100 is actually a nice budget especially given you also manage to get meat, dog food, etc. Ok so the car is a BEAUTY! We paid £10k and got £1k cash back from Nissan as part of the deal. So £9k for a 2013 Nissan Leaf with all the extras included ( heated seats, bose sound system, etc) + the reduced cost of installing our PodPoint charging point at home. I think we paid £199 for the charging cables but actual install was free from the government. We bought the car in 2017. Running costs - We fix our electric price per year and so cap out our driving costs. Over the last 12 months, that car has cost us about £30 a month in electricity. So basically, £1 a day. This is given that we drive about 1,000 miles a month or about 33 miles a day (mainly school runs and the like). We don't pay any Road tax and don't pay any congestion charge if we visit London for the theatres, etc. As the car only has a battery in it and no engine, we barely need to service it, although we do so once a year. It's literally the best thing we've ever bought! Very ideal for local driving, etc. Long distance driving needs planning because the range on our car is 100 miles. So if you want to go electric, I'd HIGHLY recommend it 😁

I am truly inspired and this very video has made me subscribe for the following reasons. 1.As an African I've had the conviction to change my diet and eat more plant based foods. I have started but feel left out of my community as I am the only one making such changes. This video shows me I am normal to want to adopt a healthier lifestyle. 2.You both really are conscientious about money and making money work for you instead which in the African community is a big need (create weath/invest/asset building etc) 3.you both look very happy in what you are doing and living your lives 4 yourself which is a breath of fresh air. My question for the plant based lifestyle is really " How do you navigate and manage family events/parties /celebrations and still remain plant based?" How do others treat you when you eat an alternative diet when they invite you as guests 4 dinner? Thanks
@TheHumblePenny
@TheHumblePenny 4 года назад
Hi Fa! Apologies, we've only just seen your comment. RU-vid marked it as possible spam, which it isn't 😊. We are glad that this video has inspired you to eat more Plant based. Especially as an African. We are major outliers on that front because meat is a major part of a lot of the food and diet. And culturally, it's just very unusual not to eat meat. Especially when you go to weddings and parties etc. So at African parties, we eat anything close to plant based. For example, some parties have plantain, moi moi and the like. We avoid everything else. Where possible, we let the caterers know that we have dietary requirements. At non-African parties, people are more accommodating. There are usually options available. With family members, our parents have been forced to live plant based due to health scares. So they are more open minded now. Some brothers and sisters are also plant based although others remain complete meat lovers. So we have a good balance. Our friends do tease us sometimes although they respect our decision to breakaway from the mould and live differently. My closest friends also cater to our needs when we attend their events or visit their homes for a meal. Having quite a diverse group of friends also helps. Has that been helpful? The thing to remember is that such lifestyle goals (including goals for Financial Independence) require you to be fiercely individual. What others think should be less of a concern over time. You'll come to be admired for your individuality and choices 😀

Family of four (2 young kids), not vegetarian but try to go for high welfare meat when we do have it (weekends) - average for 2017/2018 was £35/wk which went up to about £40 for 2019 and probably creep up as the kids eat more ;) Mix of Aldi (primarily), Tesco (usually yellow label stuff), Waitrose (milk/meat for high welfare) and then some odd bits and bobs from Sainsburys, Asda and Co-op. It does however also include things like toiletries which I can't separate out from groceries. Not gone down the organic route but we try to grow some of our own veg (onions, leeks, squash, potatoes etc). Surprising how much of a difference it makes comparing like-for-like across shops!

@Umski

@@TheHumblePenny avoid taking the kids ;) but on a serious note, I learnt that going on my own on a Saturday evening when it's quieter (not the perfect evening for some I imagine but no queues for parking or tills!) at around 7pm (after the kids' bath), I can be out and back in around 70-80 minutes (with a list of course!). Fortunately Aldi, Waitrose and Tesco (and Sainsburys) are fairly close together so I can do all of them in one trip (Tescos has last reductions around that time and Sainsburys is optional unless there's something I really need from them). It also keeps the miles down doing it all in one go. The Asda and Co-op are within walking distance so those tend to be more opportunistic purchases during the week if I or my wife happen to be going to the Post Office or elsewhere nearby. I actually hate shopping (apart from hunting for yellow label bargains ;)) so want it over and done with as efficiently as possible! I can kind of see why people go down the online shopping route but I imagine that ends up costing more overall since there are always pros and cons to convenience...

Hi Toni, all depends really 😀. If you're meat lovers, then £25 would be a struggle potentially. Alcohol is the other big factor. It's not unusual to go to a Supermarket like Sainsburys and see many people with bottles on wine and spirits in their trolleys. This definitely blows the budget. What's your currently average monthly spend?

I dont buy bottled water or breakfast cereals. I get lentils and beans in Home base as well as pink salt sometimes I get alpro soya milk there too but its all a bit hit and miss. I too shop in Aldi and also in lidl. I only go to tesco once in a while for anything the discount stores don't do. I'm hoping to shop at a local market for fruits and veg when I'm made redundant in January. I need to really think about pulling my belt in so plan to grow some veg so its organic.

I will share one more tip if you alowe me; I also buy toilet paper and liquid detergents etc in bulk BUT I buy cheap from eBay. In that way , you get delivery for free and the most important is that buying on eBay you collect Sainsbury’s NECTAR points as well which you can spend buying on eBay next time. All you have to do is to connect your Nectar card to eBay and Va-la I buy everythink I can on eBay to collect those points but of course you need to know your prices to save in the end.

@@elninonmg9397 Can you give me some examples?

@elninonmg9397 4 года назад
@@samanthahardy9903 cheap meat is easily sourced. So are carb based fillers like cereals/rice/sweet potato etc. Obviously some recipes are more appropriate for dog, others better for a cat etc. One Important thing to do is be open to what your pet actually wants to eat! They defo do NOT want to be eating nuclear-proof canned foods and grainy kibble. Some pets are used to it and it's a shame. It's a sin on the owners part to feed their animals such low quality products (even if the marketing is "high quality", it's nowhere near as good as you can make at home).
