This guy is a hero. 90% of tiny desk concerts sound better that the studio version. There are tens of bands that I will only listen to the Tiny Desk version of their tracks.
@@mistersydster I agree with the oc on alot of performances but anderson.paak isnt one. Personally I like the studio versions of the songs he performed. But I would love to hear songs from ventura in a tiny desk concert
I've been waiting for this! I always find myself admiring the sound quality whenever I'm listening to Tiny Desk. Would it be possible to make more of these videos please? And maybe go more in depth too? I would be very interested to see what you do in the mixing and post production phase!
Josh you're an awesome engineer mate the crispness, quality and dynamic range of your recordings are outstanding. keep it up, have you considered doing another video on the rest of the chain of events into the recording mixing down, ADC etc? I'm sure your fans would be very interested

I listen a lot of CDs and if I compare Your recordings to CDs or other music, You have much better quality. The sound is perfect. You show how really music should be!
"this one is not", very funny haha. But seriously, NPR and engineer Josh Rogosin you guys represent the best live sound I've never seen, the sound quality is unbelievable. Looks easy but we know there are a lot of knowledges.
I think part of the appeal of the Tiny Desk sound is the fact that most of the bands will play very quietly, compared to regular gigs. They will also be much closer to each other and have little or no foldback, forcing them to listen more to each other.
This was so great!! Nice & simple, however, I still am curious how you individually mic acoustic instruments without a line out (acoustic instruments other than a piano of course)
Thanks! It totally depends on the instrument but generally speaking, move your ear around to where it sounds the best, then replace your ear with a mic and hit record. Seriously... For acoustic guitar, usually around the 12th fret about a foot away with a cardioid condenser mic. Then EQ the snot out of it to emphasize the frequencies that sound nice to you.
Thanks for the video, it's very helpful. Always loved your work! Could you do a video on vocals as well? Is it the Sennheiser MKH 418-S that you use for vocals as well?
Lovely sound indeed! I guess the players playing softly on low-mid volume amps also helps the sound a lot! It's so refreshing to the ears, makes you want to lean forward into the music in a relaxed way. Thanks for that!
Assumming you haven't heard any NPR tiny desk and just purely looking for advice about studio setup and you stumple upon this video, you can tell Josh's advice are on point and working great right from the jingle music.
Center mic'ing can be way to harsh at times. Make sure you guys are moving the mics around to find the best spot and not just always going to the center
I suppose if I used an instrument instead of the finger snaps and humming that went with my singing, having these mics would be a nice addition, but I know that Tiny Desk would find the right mic for the need. I listen to the audio feed at work and just marvel at the quality sound regardless of the size and variety of the bands I hear. Keep it up!
NPR tiny desks are the best concerts ever... and the sound is always amazing; so well done to technicians; you can definitely be proud to produce such shows
You don't have to point the microphone towards the center of the speaker. That's just what he does for Tiny Desk. It doesn't even have to be in a right angle to and right up against the grille cloth. Many players point it at the edge where the cap and the cone meet for example. As always with guitar, try stuff out and use what you like!
I watch a lot of your videos. I was just watching Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile and thought to myself; I wonder what mic's they use on that show. So I did a quick RU-vid search and wouldn't you know it, there you are with a video on this very topic. Love the show! Love the Sound! Great engineering & great mixing! You really seem to do a lot with a little there at Tiny Desk. Well done. Well done. Keep them coming.....
I was just watching the Black Crowes last night and aside from the great performance I thought "Wow! That audio sounds incredible!" The Sennheiser mics I guess? Really really great sounding! Typical NPR! :-)
Wow thank you so much for this ( I know im a few years late ) I just recently released my first vocal album ever a few months ago Preston & Wolfe ( I say vocal because I am primarily a music composer and I never used my voice before) and I am working on trying to do a virtual set, this just helps alot thank you. I bought the camera, capture card and mics just have to get it filmed!
Why does he use a mic for the guitar amp instead of using an output jack? This guy is such an amazing sound guy its ridiculous. Also, Sennheiser is a great company. They have very affordable options too, I have the HD 200 pro headphones for electronic music production, which cost around 70$ but have a frequency response of 20Hz - 20 kHz and sound amazing.
I cannot believe in short words I told RU-vid the knowledge I need and it brought me straight to this wonderful video that answered so many of my unknown questions. Love
Very nice Have discovered some absolute gems here Always top notch audio quality at tiny desk Would have been interesting to see the mixer/console and how you combine inputs physically for the multitrack recording as well as the software used Keep up the excellent work!
