Pillow must of been more laid back as I've recently gotten a parakeet that is very bold and it's been hard to tame him

Pillow has grown up so much. Cri* My Bird Jasmine currently 9 Months old I think. She took around 20 days to step up.My bird Arctic took 1 Hour.She was 1 year old and not finger tamed but was very comfortable with me and I took her out of her cage and she just jumped on my shoulder and we took pictures lol.

I have four budgies (2 of them were rescued) and it wasn't as hard as some people said it was to tame em.they had never had human interaction before. Just spend time with young budgie(the younger it its the closer the line is on their head) put your hand in the cage and slowly get it closer. Offer your bird veg/fruit and treats to make sure it eats from your hand.Do this every hour or 2 then eventually make it perch on a small stick.This stick will make it less confronting than a finger(do try though) then move on to perching on your finger with a treat of sorts to entire them.Introduce them outside the cage in a small safe environment until your bird is happy either way. Make sure to begin with you give them 2 days of adjustment.If you love them the process will become faster and more efficient. Thanks for the advice though @Kevin and Krista Extras but I do think your bird was already tame because it was in a pet store had a lot of human iteration so it kinda felt chill with humans.Budgies are very social birds and even if you have a mirror they need a friend

I got a budgie a week ago, and i got them from an breeder who "hand raised" them. Their definition of hand raised, was probably grabbing the bird with their hand. When the breeder got the two birds for me, he put his hand inside the cage and GRABBED the bird. It's taking a while to tame my lovely "hand-raised" budgies. my theory is, that the budgie is traumatised by my hand, since the breeder didn't really treat them properly, and grabbed the budgies hard.

Oh god...my baby budgie was actually hand tame and I mean tamed perched finger . My budgie still is getting used to me he’s getting way better with perching on my finger and aiming where to fly I’m very happy with my little budgie I remember when my budgie smacked himslef around the house trying to fly . But now he will aim where to go and fly I’m teaching him how to not fly as much (only fly when it’s needed or when he should ) I’m still fine with him flying it’s just when he keeps flying my budgie is on the roof of his cage right now and he won’t leave his spot . ..... I feel like it’s his new home?.oh well I’ll get him out soon

I have a question?! I have my budgie for almost a year and a half and I’ve tried to tame them and they won’t budge 😔 how do I gain their trust 😔
@birdlover1936
@birdlover1936 5 лет назад
Do you have multiple budgies or just one? The problem with having multiple budgies is that they’d more likely be willing to spend time with each others and not you, which makes it very hard to tame them. Also I’d like to mention that all birds are different. Some budgies are naturally laid back and some may take months or even years to tame. My male budgie was luckily a very easy bird to tame. It took a month to get him on my finger and outside his cage. My female budgie however, was very skittish and wouldn’t step on my finger. I had her for months and she never really got used to me. Unforunately I had to give her away to someone else, cause things weren’t working out. The first step in taming your budgie, is to get him used to you and your hands. Make sure he’s absolutely comfortable around you and your hands. Signs include: preening in your presence, singing/chirping, puffing his feathers and standing on one leg (this may also be a sign of sickness). Next thing to do is to get him on your hand. Don’t force it! Lure him with treats and try making him step up by lifting your hand to your budgies chest level (birds like high places and are more likely to step up than down). After this you can start taking him out of his cage, train him, play with him, whatever. Remember to not force him! It’s the best way to lose his trust. Good luck:)

@@birdlover1936Having one budgie is cruel and its not true that they are easier to tame than two.Why u give advice to better just have one😔
@birdlover1936
@birdlover1936 5 лет назад
Philipp S. I never said it’s better to have one budgie. It is easier to tame your budgie when you only have one. I’m speaking from experience. Of course, it’s a lot more time consuming to have just one, cause you have to keep him company. If you don’t have the extra time to do that, you should definitely get two. It’s cruel to keep one budgie completely alone in a cage without company.

Yes, the same happened to me. I got mine on Wednesday (est Australia) ,6 days ago. But, I recommend (I know, you already have him/her) getting a older one, as they won’t get as stressed. But it’s great to hear, I started touching mine after 2 days. He is very tame, and very balanced😂 if they aren’t balanced, place them some where else, and to tell, they’re tail will go up and down to balance them. But, Pillow is a great bird, and great for your little kid :) happy wishes for you and your bird :)

When first getting any bird if you leave them in the cage for a week or longer they will become territorial to the cage. When you bring them home let them come out of the travel cage on their own. Have them out hanging around you during the rest of the day. They get used to you faster and be more comfortable. You guys have done a great job with your birds!

@birdlover1936

Budgies are naturally more interested in other budgies than humans which is probably why he ignores you. They’d much rather prefer to hang out with their own species.

Well....I have 2 budgies and I’ve had them together but I used to keep them in separate cages and train them but every now and then I would put them in the same cage and then separate them again and once I had them both completely tame and I put them in the same cage and they were fine so what I recommend is keep the tame one in a separate cage and let him glimpse the other two every now then but of course if he’s used to them don’t do that because he’s get super lonely and won’t even try.

I adopted my parakeet, blu from the humane society. His oeners were moving and didn't want him so I got him. I tamed him by constantly being around him, and putting his cage right next to ne wherever i was. It was a little harder since his wings weren't clipped so i would let him out to burn off energy and he would eventually go back home. I would sing and read to him and eventually he would get used to me i moved to hand feeding and it got to the point where he would come to me its worked well and tonight he let me rub his cheek so its still a work in progress.

Normally, when I'm cleaning Cleo's (my budgie's) cage, I like to let her run free and get some exercise. But the thing is that I can't always watch her when I'm doing that. I'm afraid that she'll go under and behind things that I can't reach. And she's also a bit afraid of my hand so when I try to get her, she runs away. Do you know of there's a way I can let her explore and still keep an eye on her without her getting hurt or stuck? I do have a travel cage that I put her in but it's so tiny and I feel bad. Sorry if I am making no sense or not using my brain and being an idiot lol. I just don't have much time on other days to let her out of her cage. Thanks if you reply
@KevinandKrista
@KevinandKrista 5 лет назад
Cleo the Budgie - As far as her getting hurt, I think as long as she's not flying near a hot stove or something clearly dangerous, it's okay to just let her explore. Like anything, there may be a little risk involved, but chances are she won't get seriously hurt. I'd just check on her periodically, and if she does get stuck, just help her out and you can both chalk it up to a learning experience. As far as getting her back in the cage, her fear of your hand is a separate issue, so you might want to work on that before letting her out and having to rely on handling her to get her back in. Good luck!

I didn't use spray millet, but I used these seedling grasses (grass with seed on them), it worked fine so yes I'd definitely agree with luring them with food. I found that my budgie was very scared but when it came to that grass he came right on to my hand. Also I have a question, I had a budgie before called Sky, and we let Sky out to have freedom, we closed the curtains but he somehow got behind it and I think he banged right into it (I heard a loud bang and found him behind the curtains). (He died after that) So I'm not rlly sure how to bring my new budgies (Lemon and Charlie) out and not get them to bang on the windows. (Like in a big area; lounge) I have been able to let them have a bit of a play in a bedroom but they aren't rlly allowed on the clothes or bed... Btw I have a hard surface floor (wood). Is their any advice on how I can get them to walk/fly around without banging into windows(my windows are huge btw)? I definitely think your video is very helpful from my experiences as well tho! (:
@KevinandKrista
@KevinandKrista 5 лет назад
Jenny Meng - Sorry about Sky! Are Lemon and Charlie's wings clipped? They won't be able to get nearly as much height or speed with clipped wings, so there's less chance of them really slamming into a window. (Pillow bumped once or twice when he was younger, but never got hurt.) Then you can let the wings grow out once they're older and are more familiar with their space.

I kinda gave up but I know feel guilty... So I decided to give it one more shot! Since I love my parakeets and want them to have a healthy life. My advice is to keep trying. If it helps just put the cage on the floor and take the lid off. Wait till they’re used to it, so they will feel more comfortable to come out.

Im also pretty sure i will be the soul taker of this bird and i go to school for almost 8 hours a day. Im willing to put the time in but i would like an extra opinion.

As long as you research a lot and know what you’re getting yourself into, you’d make a great owner. I too go to school and what I like to do is to give my budgie lots of different toys, swings, perches etc. to keep him entertained while I’m gone. As soon as I get home, I train him and play with him and sometimes walk around the house with him.

Sara White - I agree with Bird Lover - as long as your bird is entertained, he should be fine without you. You can also play videos of other birds chirping if say, you're home but not able to spend time with him. Then he'll feel like he has company.

ok hi i need help with my budgies that ive acquired! they are about a year or two old and havent been socialized very well by previous owners. ive had them for about 2 weeks now. one (novi) is comfortable with me holding her but she will try to fly directly back to the cage unless i take her out of the room. the other one (novak) will not let me handle him at all. he flies away and if he holds still long enough for me to get him he will bite me, and hard enough to break skin. ive tried everything to get him used to me, but nothing is working. id like some help or advice pls???
@KevinandKrista
@KevinandKrista 5 лет назад
Grayson Vallotton - Have you tried using food to get him on your finger? Most budgies love spray millet. Try holding it so he has to sit on your finger to eat it. Just a suggestion. Good luck!

Hi! I have a sky blue budgie, his name is Frost. He's 7 months old now, I got him from a pet store a few months ago, he wasn't ever handled by humans and was scared of them. Though he is pretty active and playful now, he isn't scared of me anymore. He also now happily sits on my hand in his cage, he sings to my nails too and dances. XD He comes to my hand without any treats. So now that he's used to me, I want to take him out of his cage. I have a bird proof area in my room where I free fly my doves and Cockatiel. The only problem is, I'm afraid that how will I get him back in his cage? He is used to me, but I'm still scared that what if I accidentally scare him or anything. And I still thing that he might not come to my hand outside. Especially since he only comes to my hand whenever he wants to. He doesn't bite or gets scared, he just preens his feathers or starts eating his food and ignores me if he isn't in the mood to come. Though when he wants to come, he acts like an extremely playful tamed Budgie. I just tried free flying in my room yesterday. I showed him my finger outside the cage with the door opened. He jumped towards the door and tried to come to my finger but he didn't wanted to leave his cage. So after half an hour I stopped and closed his cage door. So if you'd have any advice that would be really appreciated! Thank you so much! ^^ (I'm sorry for any mistakes, I'm German!)

Try mashing banana or boiling and mashing carrots etc. and sprinkling their favorite treat on it (maybe millet). That's what I did for mine who hated anything but treats and pellets. Now she is very adventurous for any new food. You can also try the same thing with a little of pure canned pumpkin.

I know this video is old but it got recommended to me at the perfect time. I started feeling anxious about my bird.... its been almost 3 or 4 days since I've had my little budgie, but I felt like I went to fast for her at the beginning. I also felt like I was bothering her to much at night (her cage is by my bed) so I was feeling very guilty. But I haven't noticed anything bad that made me assume I was bothering her to much at night. My baby is about 6 months old. I am trying my best not to give up. I just want to make her happy and not go faster than she's comfortable with. I am scared to open her cage and let her fly around tho. She doesn't trust me enough to step up yet and I don't want to chase her around my room when I need her to go back in her cage. If anyone has advice for that please let me know because I am unsure how to get her to trust me enough to let me put her back in her cage. Should I use a perch and millet? Should I use a towel? How do I approach her like of she's on my floor and I need her to go back in her cage? I don't want her to freak out and fly into my wall. Also she's been sneezing every now and then so I am not sure if it's normal or if I should take her to a vet. If I need to take her to a vet how do I make that a good experience? Also she won't come to me when I hold millet but if I put it close to her she'll lean forward and eat it. She'll slowly inch closer to me, but she's still unsure of my hand. When she wants attention or some millet she'll sit on a specific perch and when she's ready for bed she climbs up to a specific high perch with her back to me. Today she's started chirping on her own without any budgie sounds. I don't want to give up on her but yesterday and this morning my anxiety was so bad I started crying. I dont want to give her away so soon and give up on her, but I want her to live the best life she can. My mom said I was humanizing her too much, but idk if that's really a bad thing.

What am I doing wrong? I try to train my budgies but every time I put my finger in the cage they climb on then got back on the stick I try to take them out but they will just fly back in they always want to stay together and only a few times one came out and stood on the cage trying to get back in and they have been with me for 3 months already I just want them to like me I'm not mean to them and they are not a baby or old they are in there teen area I even give them treats when they do something like if they at least try to get on my finger but I'm guessing it's not working because all they want are the treats And there are 2 of them Please answer back
@KevinandKrista
@KevinandKrista 5 лет назад
lucks lucks - It sounds like if you have more than one and they're not babies, they've probably already bonded to each other, and have less reason to bond with you. I'd continue with the hand feeding of treats, because even if that's all they're interested in, at least it will get them used to standing on your finger on a regular basis, and they'll be more comfortable being out of the cage. And then who knows what could happen in the future. Good luck!

So I have a completely different experience I did not have a hard time at all it is something like the situation you got but my budgie is 2 and a half years old It just seems like you should give it a little space not like a week even a hour letting the budgie outside is okay It's just what I recommend

The stripes have nothing to do with being young. That is just part of their plumage colour. Look at the nostrils flesh colour. It needs to be pinkish colour. As they mature it’ll either go blue for make and brown for female.

if their heads are completely covered in stripes they are young and as they mature the stripes disappear from their foreheads

ive had my parakeet for almost a year and ive tried all the taming tips and tricks and nothing helps one day im able to touch her toes the next she runs away ive completely gave up in trying to tame her she still runs away when im changing her food and when im near her ive cried at night thinking if i should give her away because she just is a loud distraction and wondering if i made the right choice in getting her the main reason i wanted a parakeet is because im lonely at home because my sister is always on her phone and no one plays with their mom or dad so i just go outside on my skateboard just talking to myself but i wanted her so i could play with her and bring her out and train her to do tricks and i see everyone else holding and petting their birds and i get jealous its been months and months of trying to get her to not run away when i walk towards her i have just completely gave up but i want to try again so any bird trainers how have train parakeets like these or just trainers please tell me because i have just gave up

cactus banana man - Aw, I'm sorry to hear that! Do you have space where she can come out of the cage and fly around on her own? Maybe she'll be more willing to come out if she can explore in her own time. Will she take treats from your hand? Pillow doesn't always do what we want, either - he can be willful sometimes. Good luck! 😊❤️👍
