Absolutely loved this series as a kid.. I think the original series ran from the late 1960's but these particular episodes were a new series in about '81/'82.. I would have been 9/10 at the time. It was about the only subject (History) I was any good at primary school, well that and English. Proved to be the case at secondary school to in the 'guinea pig' year of 1988 for GCSE's. My two best grades... Eventually read History & English Lit. at university in the 1990's. Where did 40 years go? Lol..
Looks like I am two years older than you, as in 81-82 I would have been in my first year at senior school and the penultimate year of O Levels in 1986. I remember watching this series there.
What an adorable child Edward was! That actor is probably retired now, with a pension. I love the warmth and basic optimism of this family, and how they bravely face their circumstances. THANK YOU for posting these episodes. Period details are very interesting, too.
This music makes me feel kind of sad and nostalgic and well.... Weird.. Time goes so quickly.. 47yrs old... Wonder how old I was when this was broadcast.. What's real mad is this would have been big part of my life and yet so far I don't remember any of what's going on in this.. Maybe in another episode...
It bored me to tears at school, but I can't get enough of it,glad it is on here, time does fly in the blink of an eye,am guessing you was born 73,same as me,it does make me sad and nostalgic too

Oooh big mistake I noticed... Not usual for schools programmes.. The dad says-- _let me get a word in _*_edgeways_* Although that's the misquoted saying now, back then it was the more correct *edgewise* Silly mistake... Tsssk
That's how things were back in those days. .Abortion was'nt something people talked about, you had your family and made the best of it. Things were hard, but bear in mind they were more hardened to life back then, times were hard but you got on with it. Ask your older family members who were around during the 30's to the 50's. They will tell you about food and clothing rationing when the war was on.
In fact she doesn't have many kids.. In this series she was modern... Most families then had 8 or 9 children.. And more even.. Mad... They had so many because mortality was high then so out of 8 or 9 at least 2 or 3 would make it to adulthood.. And forward the genes for family.. True.
@@solcutta3661 This was very common in the days before proper vaccinations and any other safety nets were in place. Having that many kids certainly ensured at least a few may make it in the end.
