I watched this at school 30 years ago, and it's still engraved in my mind, that's how good this series was, I didn't pay attention to anything at school, but sat with my legs crossed watching this. I'll never forget the theme tune.
@@Marshallo.o 😁😁 I only searched for it on youtube cause the tune also popped into my head. Then I binge watched a load of episodes and it gave me such a great feeling. Strange isn't it 😁
I am much older than you and would have been at senior school 40 years ago (now 52). I remember watching this series there, and have connections with the War as both my parents were born in the thirties and Grandpa (Reg Bates) an ARP Warden in his spare time. In fact, this period of time stretches from my mother's birth to grammar school sixth former!
Thank you for posting, very interesting. I like the way even the little girl was given responsibility, off on her bike, off to tell the other warden the phone wasn't working, before going home to the shelter,. I can't imagine any of today's parents asking this of a child her age and the child just doing it ... no back-chat!!
Love this. Snooty Mrs Maitland was played by Doreen Sloane - best known for playing the equally snooty Annabelle Collins in the early days of Brookside.
The days of saying goodbye with a stiff upper lip. The nation was made of steel. Mrs Maitland, Annabel from Brookside, in fact i think she left halfway through to start filming that.
Both my parents were children during the war - here my father would have been eight and mother just four. Their early lives were overshadowed by air raids, ration books and gas masks!
Bless Her, Least She Would Not Have Heard It Coming, Strange How It Only Looked Like Her House Got The Full 3xplosion. Maybe The Medal Was Keeping Her And Her House Safe. Kind Of Her To Give It To Lil Lad So He Was Safe! - True Spirit Of A Warrior Woman :) Always Looking Out For Others. God Bless Her! 🤗
7 episodes are missing from this series which includes the first episode, why? and where are the rest and why does it say in the playlist to the left at the bottom of the window "7 unavailable videos are hidden"?? I can not see that they would be blocked by RU-vid when other series from How We Used To Live are fully on YT although admittedly not every series.
I don't think ull learn much from this despite it being a schools programme.. As you study it remember that the history is a winners perspective.. Hitler tried no less than 9 times to avert war with England.. It wasn't over what the UK and USA claim.. It was about taking back the German fatherland that had been stolen in the decades before the war by all manner of countries with no right to the claim.it was also about not wanting to be under the boot of capitalist fat cat bankers who had crippled the German economy with interest rates on loans. So Germany booted them out and got on with its own monetary system.. Which was of course socialism. And they did so well and prosperous that the UK and USA rothschild led bankers didn't want people seeing and knowing how a country could manage and even flourish without their aid.. It was about money. And so the materialist capitalist English wanted this socialism stamping out and fast.. To them it was worse than communist bolsheviks..and the USA bankers saw a opportunity to get richer from all sides and so they loaned to finance all manner of countries to enable them to fight in the war.. Many were still paying this debt off a little as 10 years ago.. All that time repaying the interest on the loans.. Capitalism is the scourge of the free world and is the root of all conflict.. Greedy fat cats who always want more and get it from the interest in loans and then have the cheek to claim bankruptcy and get the government (us) to bail them out.... History is written by the winners and mostly is bs.
Sounds like Chief ARP Warden Hodges' catchphrase of Dad's Army fame. He was Captain Mainwaring's nemesis, remember! My Grandpa was an ARP Warden when not in his reserved occupation.
