I just bought 50 LED cables and am using them with the Erica black and techno system. I’ve tried patches with LED cables and then replaced them one by one for regular cables and so far have found no discernible differences. Very useful and looks amazing!
Good video. I've looked into patch cables with LEDs in the past. Some little company would bring them out, but with the manual work required to incorporate the LEDs, they find selling them becomes unprofitable and they quit offering them. Another issue is that the LEDs drain off signal strength. You mention the DFAM sequencer issues using the LED cables and I can also say that using longer standard, or splitter patch cables can be dicey, too. The DFAM can be a finicky little beast, sometimes.
I think the issue you ran into is that the led takes a small amount of current from the line and clock signals are incredibly short pulses. So its either attenuating and adding a slight bit if capacitance to the line. Still worth it to understand what is being patched where especially with LFOs.
Depending on the output impedance of the outputs on your gear, the LEDs can cause a voltage drop in the signal. Perhaps the SubH’s clock out has a higher output impedance or the DFAM’s clock input requires a higher voltage, and the voltage drop from the LED is making it not work in that instance. Another instance where these cables could cause an issue is if you’re using them for pitch CV, the voltage drop could make things go out of tune. But, for those applications, you have regular patch cables, and you can use these one for things like LFOs or envelopes where visualizing the signal is more useful. If you have a buffered mult, you could try running the clock through that and see if it helps. Or run it through one of the Matriarch’s attenuverters (knob turned fully clockwise). That might mitigate the voltage drop.
NICE!! Myvolts are such sweet people making awesome stuff for us jammers. I love their stuff! It's too bad about those weird glitches on certain patches. I've been using mine with an sq-1 and behringer model d. I haven't noticed issues, but I barely know what I'm doing as far as voltages, and modular specs are, so who knows if I might be missing something. Maybe they'll do a second round with improvements..They did with their mickxer which the original had volume drop issues but I hear the new one is a bit better there. Despite the issues, it's nice they have great customer service to work things out afterwards at least. Great video!
yeah cool, i'd think clock signals need to be fairly precise and the LED's like slow the speed it of the pulse and also likely take a small amount of the power out, at a guess, but that said i like them cool things and especially relative new comes to patching, ive got a multi meter out before now to see what power is being sent out so a visualisation of it would help build a picture of whats going on
