Lilacs are such a gorgeous spring blooming shrub. Up until this year I wasn't a huge fan but the blooms on my two Miss Kim Lilacs won me over. I have never seen such a beautiful display of purple magnificently fragrant blooms. Since I wasn't a fan I have neglected these a bit but this display caused me to want to really do the right thing and nurture them. Better late than never right?!? In this video I discuss when to prune Lilacs to maximize next years bloom and show you step by step how to do it. I hope this is helpful in pruning your Lilacs as well.
Enjoy!

Thank you!❤ This was very helpful. My lilacs are so overgrown but I’m afraid to hard prune them😢. I’ll try this to rebuild, thin, and shorten them some.

Excellent information & thank you so much 😊 & I must say one stunning garden & display ❤ After waiting 3yrs for my young Hungarian Lilac plant to flower & was about to give up on it this year, after trimming it last year for the first time as it's 6ft in height now, it gave a wonderful display like yours & the flowers are large. Is it possible to dead head a flower when it's died or wait for them all to die first before doing them & once that's done, I shall trim back.

In need to trim mine, I like the pruning vs using hedge trimmer

I will be curious to know whether your pruned lilacs produce flowers next year. As I understand it, they set future flowers on old wood. Also, I have seen other videos urging deadheading spent blooms. Did you do that?

Yes I watched one where they said dead head the flowers after blooming & then you have within 6 weeks to cut the plant back for next year blooming.

That’s a close relative to the common lilac. It’s sometimes called “Late Lilac”. It’s Syringa Villosa. True lilac (the common one people in the U.S. have been growing for more than a century) is Syringa Vulgaris. Just so anyone watching doesn’t try to prune their lilac (S. Vulgaris) the same way you’re recommending here. They grow a little differently and so need to be pruned accordingly.

Edit: common lilac (sometimes also called French lilac) (again we’re talking S. Vulgaris) has been grown in the U.S. WAY MORE than a century. Colonists brought them over from Europe where they’ve been cultivated for centuries. S. Villosa shown in this video is a new comer. Know what you have so you can prune it the best suited way.

I have an old crepe myrtle, 20+,. I have been cutting back every year and it now has 5-6 knuckles that are very large. The limbs have been growing out of the knob yearly about 1- feet high. This year there was no growth on them at all for the first time. I have shoots growing from the trunks but no where else. The knobs are about 6-7 feet off the ground. The trunk looks very healthy but the knobs are gray for the first time.. help

I just planted 5 of these in full sun, how long did it take for yours to get this big? I'm worried they will be too slow and the deer will get to them before they can take off

Great news!!!! Lilacs are deer resistant. They don’t like them. It took mine less than a year to get big. They are moderate growers. Yay, you’ll love yours.

Mine bloomed about a month ago. Is it too late to prune them? Thank you.

Hey Carol, Mine bloomed a month ago and I am going to prune mine in the next few days. You are fine as long as you do it before mid June. Thank you for watching :-)
