TEAM SGG PATREON / somegadgetguy Netflix's subscription changes are REALLY frustrating! Tying an account to a physical address is silly. Here's how I would change Netflix pricing. How would YOU fix this mess?

Same. I was letting my elderly home who is in assisted living, my older sister who is on disability use my account. It shouldn't matter where those screens are located. If I am paying for it I and my family should be able to stream it wherever we want. I canceled my account with them after having been a long time subscriber.

Yep, two kids in college over here, but also 2 Internet services, so lots of potential locations. Have never shared my account outside my 4 person family. We may have hit 3 streams at one time maybe a few times a year but never 4. Now they are making me rethink their service. I won't be paying more.

I really like the alternative you proposed. Having to share an algorithm and history between multiple viewers would be annoying if you're trying to save money, but way less annoying than having to connect every Netflix device to your home Wi-Fi monthly. Plus, since we already are paying for concurrent streams, it's an easier pill to swallow.

Want a new profile on your account? That'll be another $5 a month. Done.
@ekinteko

@@SomeGadgetGuy While I get your frustrations, you're missing a couple key points. Firstly, if you have a grandpa, a Colledge student, and an aunt somewhere, and they all have different profiles with different passwords.... that just is complicated. It makes no sense to consolidate them to pay for one service. They should have their individual accounts, and pay for their use. It is common sense, that the bundled service is just one login password with separate accounts. And it makes sense this is for a family who live together. If anything, it is the naming convention that fails here. The other point you're wrong about is your tiered system, it's too complicated and overwhelming. Look at Apple, whatever product they're selling, they limit the options. Less is More. It's called the Paradox of Choice, where having better but fewer options is preferred over having worse and more options. Eg, besides the colour and storage, you can't really customise an iPhone.... but Android phones come with different RAM, Processor, Camera, Software, and Regional Variants all in the same family (eg Xiaomi). But Netflix is not perfect. They need to tweak it, and structure it better, whilst promoting the "ladder effect". Which means winning someone as a customer, but then persuading them to upgrade. Apple does this so well, with their cheapest iPad being accessible, but having storage restrictions causes people to upgrade, which then comes near their higher-end tablets so people decide for the upgrade, but that now has limited storage so they pay a bit more, and on and on, suddenly you've bought an iPad that cost you x2 or more than you set out to pay.
@ekinteko
@ekinteko Год назад
Here's an example; They should have made a "Basic Model", which has No Ads, 720p only, Single Account. Let's say USD $5 monthly worldwide price. However the content is restricted. That latest Movie or Show everyone is excited to see? Yeah, when you click on it, it asks for you to upgrade, or limited trial for the upgrade. The next tier "Phone Model" should be full access, No Ads, 720p stream, single account. Let's say USD $8 price. This is decent for phones, but doesn't look that great on tablets and TVs. It is named like that to tell the customer what to expect. The third tier "TV Model" would be the most popular. It's priced at $12 monthly, worldwide. This is 1080p at higher bandwidth and priority connection. And gives you two streams in your household. One for TV the other for a phone or tablet. There are alot of couples out there, and the quality is definitely acceptable. The last would be "Family Model". Here you get 4 streams/accounts. It costs USD $18 per month. You get the perks of the former option, but now it is at the highest 4K-HDR streaming option. See how the ladder works? I set out to pay $5/month, and ended up paying x4 more, whilst easily justifying it for myself. I don't feel like I'm getting ripped off, but feel like I'm getting more value at each step. Now the sticking point in all of this, is VPN, Cracked Devices, and Password Sharing. They can't ban people who do that, that's their monetary source. They just need to entice them to pay. Otherwise people will give up entirely and just resort to piracy instead. And paying USD $20 per month seems worth it for the quality of life improvements it gives me, in terms of having a curated library, watch anywhere, and not having to physically spend my time trying to get a pirated copy of something. It's why Steam became successful, and so was Netflix in its earlier days. They just need to go for it. Sometimes it's not necessary to expand your business/profits, but much more crucial to regulate your current standing/revenue. The capitalists don't like to hear that but it's true.
@vshah1010

@@SomeGadgetGuy A "profile" is just something Netflix invented. If Network starts charging per profile, it can be a way for Netflix to increase their prices without providing more content. Right now I have 2 profiles - myself and a profile called "kids". I noticed the kids profile has mainly kids shows and most of these TV show and movies are not in my profile. So, each profile has different content. Which is another point. Netflix seems to limit content and customize to your profile. If you want more movies, you have to create different preferences. And, if they charge per profile, it will get very expensive. I hate that the suggestion list is _algorithmic_ . It really limits the choices you have, and they have a small selection to begin with. And, they repeat alot of the titles. Instead of an algorithm, I would rather have a complete list of titles. Their trailers aren't that good. It's scenes from the movie or TV show, but I still can't tell if it will be good. I go to youtube to see a better trailer. Also, I don't really care that much about high resolution. 1080p or 720p is just fine for me. I don't need UHD, etc.

@PaulTincknell

Might I also add to your eminently reasonable take that Netflix (and other tech companies) also factor in a little bit of customer loyalty into their thinking? We've consistently been Netflix subscribers since they practically began with their DVD-by-mail service with the same four users and that likely will account for practically $0 benefit to us. Even those that played by their rules are being ignored in the rush to create more profit. What likely will happen is that some or all of us will drop Netflix and only sign up occasionally to watch a few shows and then unsubscribe again.

I have had a Netflix account for more than 20 years. I opened the account right after buying my first DVD player. When Netflix began offering streaming in addition to DVDs by mail, my family (most of whom I lived with at the time) used my account to stream. When I bought my first 4K TV, I wanted to be able to watch 4K programs and discovered I needed to subscribe to the 4 streams at a time plan. Today, I am retired and live alone. I actually subscribe to a LOT of streaming services, including Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu (w/o ads), Paramount+ (w/o ads), and Peacock (w/o ads). (Did I mention I have no patience for ads in my middle age?) I don't watch much on some of those services but don't mind paying for them because my extended family uses my accounts to watch them. But if they start cracking down on password sharing, I will have to rethink whether it's worth continuing to pay for them. As it happens, 3 of my siblings and a nephew share a single physical address and Internet service. If Netflix requires me to designate a physical location for my account, it may make sense for me to designate their home as my location. As I understand it, in other countries, Netflix has allowed account holders to pay a fee to add a second location. In that case, I will probably designate my sibling's address as my main location and pay to add my home to my account. If I can't do that, my siblings will have to pay for their own plan. But then, I will have to decide if it is worth paying for 4 streams at a time to get some content in 4K. I don't think I would downgrade to 720P, but I might go for their standard plan.
@SomeGadgetGuy
@SomeGadgetGuy Год назад
That's all so complicated though right? Why not have "users" under one account, with a fee per user account? This idea of making streaming easy enough to do it anywhere in the world, but then cracking down on a physical address to define the account is ludicrous.
@GOwen-vo4xs
@GOwen-vo4xs Год назад
If we are paying for up to 4 screens at a time we should be able to use that anywhere. It shouldn't be tied down to one address. There shouldn't be any additional fee for users at all. I too have been with Netflix as long as this. I just canceled last month because of them requiring the additional fee for this.

Such a great take on this Juan. The whole point of a la carte is that you pay for what you want. Their new model is just forcing people to pay for things they don't want to get what they do: back to bundling. If they overreach, people will just get their content elsewhere. It's a shame these companies always have to re-learn this the hard way 😑

I think Netflix is doing now what game publishers did with piracy. They consider they are losing money because there are people not explicitly paying for the service. It was proven that piracy does not hurt as much as game publishers did. There were enough people paying for a good game. Netflix has revenue issues that are caused by competition and by the fact that you cannot continue to grow. So they turned to their customers to squeeze more money out of them. This is a tactic one would expect out of a mobster, not a company. I can pirate media, but I chose not to do it. I am ok with price increase as long as it applies to all subscribers. I consider the profile tax very abusive, arbitrary and this is where I draw the line.

Valid solution to the new household limitation Netflix is pushing. If they want to start charging per user, just do that. The premium subscription with concurrent streams was already set up to be a family account. You can't have the cake and eat it. Rather than asking for additional subscriptions on top of the premium, just make individual contracts for each and have the possibility of a family account.

Too many streaming platforms to be paying $10-20 each for me. I only have prime and apple. Apple benefits me the most because I’m already mostly on Apple computing devices. I’m considering getting rid of prime as it’s price perks aren’t as attractive to me. Not sure I want to go to Netflix. Personally I think with the number of streaming services out there access to all content should be between $5-8for 1080 no ads and $10+ for 4K users. This allows it to be more affordable for the average person. If they want to show ads we shouldn’t have to pay over $5 per user. They are getting there revenue. Prime made more sense with all the added benefits but since many of what seemed to be perks aren’t as perky anymore and the overlap of apple services for games, streaming, and music it doesn’t seem as appealing. At those Netflix prices for just streaming doesn’t appeal as much to me. Gets expensive for the average larger family.

According to actual RU-vid data, you are incorrect. On mobile they changed to 480p default and most users did not notice adifference and don't change it back. It's rarely worth it. 4K requires massive amounts of data storage and bandwidth, and there are very few users that actually can take advantage of it, and even then, when you are watching from afar, the diference is not so huge, but the cost for running it is, and woith ever increasing users, it is unsustainable unless it can be financially supported. Again, not my opnions, but data from RU-vid. Of course Netflic sees far less daily traffic, but it woudl be wise for them to take this into account.

Netflix has alot less content, and I don't like much of the content. Netflix is better for TV shows than movies. There are not that many movies. There are certainly other sites for movies that are alot better. Even some free sites (with ads) have a bigger selection of movies. If there is an ad free option, I tend to go with the ad free option though. I signed up 1 month ago, and I'm disappointed. For movies, it's very limited. They do have a few TV shows I like.
