Here is a question from one of our subscribers. How would you answer this?
“I really like your Videos and they are really informative for someone that just started to work in a county Jail. My question would be how you would address the situation, because I'm not sure if my way is the right way. I am overweight so i get allot of comments from inmates when I'm doing my rounds. My approach is to ignore the comments as long as they are not used when I'm giving a direct order to a Inmate. So on rounds i just ignore comments concerning my weight but lets say its count time or something and i give a direct order to sit on the bung or stand against the wall, if a inmate would make a comment about my weight i would address the disrespect. I hope you understand what I'm trying to explain. Is this a good way or should i handle it differently. My thinking about this is, that if i react every time I'm doing a round then i never get done and they see that there's a way to get to me. For me the comments are nothing that concern me, I been overweight all my life and heard every remark so it doesn't bother me. Just wanted to see if I'm on the wrong track.
Thanks for the answer and keep up the great channel.

I have experienced a little of the same. I started of being called "slim". I didnt do anything about it. As my reutation grew, my name evolved to "slim shady', because Sgt.Olson will be really friendly to the inmates and then write them a case with a smile on his face. I stopped yelling and started writing. The guys there understood that I know they know the rules and if they are broken, a case follows. I dont have to say anything to anybody until its served and investigated. Thats the power you have. Take from them so they will give you respect. I told my building officers to be this way and I had a huge influx of cases for a short period. As fast as it started, the cases stopped and my buildings became organized and calm. These people need swift consequences for the wrong doing in the facility. We dont punish people, we enforce the rules. Learn the inmate handbook and use it against them. That is your source of power.

This scenario in my opinion would be a lot tougher to handle if you are a rookie officer, because I took a lot of time to "find my voice" during my rookie year. I would let some disrespectful comments slide because I felt that was the way to get inmates to like and respect me by showing them that I'm not hurt by them. As I wrapped up my first year back in November I learned that the opposite is true. Inmates actually respect you more when you nip any disrespect in the bud as soon as it happens. Nowadays when an inmate gets out of line with me, I immediately call them out on it. I will walk up to them and tell them to follow me (if it was said in the dayroom) and pull them away from their buddies. I'll tell them straight out that this behavior is not going to fly with me and if it continues then documentation will follow. Most inmates just shrivel up when they are called out on disrespect and won't do it again afterwards.

I have an advantage of being a supervisor. I normally say something like "Really? I do everything I can to help you guys with what you need, then you want to turn around and disrespect me?". After a conversation they Normally end up apologizing. They get disrespectful normally out of frustration. If you just listen to them it normally de-escalates things
@TierTalk

Good point. That’s why I mentioned those extreme moments. In this case, it looks like they’re just disrespecting him just to do it.

I work in canteen and I agree, I give them a few moments to speak sometimes and depending on the level of disrespect I may let them walk away if they are. I will usually let them know I took what they said as disrespect and if they are receptive I will usually let it go. I let them know clearly what will happen if they continue, I don't get mad, I let them know the choice is theirs. If they continue and I have to deal with the inmate on a regular basis I may write them up. I have and I haven't. I don't know there is one way it depends on the inmate and the circumstances. Like you said sometimes if you listen their beef isn't with you they are just venting. But if they are posturing and advancing toward you then that is behavior that could lead to violence and I try to write those up on general principle. I've had inmates yell across the yard "were gonna drop you on your head!" But I couldn't see who it was, it was night pill line and I was leaving the yard. Surprisingly I've had very little overt disrespect, like calling me racial slurs and such. Gemeral dissatisfaction with services is common. Lots of refusals to follow direct orders which is disrespectful in nature. Sometimes you have no choice but to hit your alarm and put the yard down. If theres a fence between you that helps. one time an inmate worker mocked my voice and was repeating things I had said and I for sure wrote him up and tried to fire him but they made him come back to work 🤨. One time an inmate farted in my direction and I didn't write him up I regret that! One time while running the line an inmate was having a mental health crisis and was yelling "I'm 13th on the list?! That's 13 of your family that's gonna go!" Sounds scary but i actually didn't think he really wanted to kill 13 of my family, I wanted to say "shit dude I have a small family there's like 8 of us!" I wrote that up but not as a rule violation as an informational chrono. So I guess that is always an option to submit the informational chrono so it's on the inmates file if the behavior escalates and the inmate doesn't necessarily know. I'd say the golden rule always applies, treat people the way you want to be treated treat inmates woth dignity and never match their disrespect. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do I've heard the housing units are wild especially level 4 mental health buildings.

I had that problem 1 time in my career of being a supervisor. I handled it accordingly. This night was a Thursday night, on Friday nights they may be out in up late. Well I came in Friday night and went into the quad in called a meeting explaining to the inmates how I as a woman and Sgt/ Officer or my officers will not tolerate any disrespect. Next I told them this will be an early night. No tv , no dayroom privileges, and no talking , lights are now off and we will try it again tomorrow night. This was an open bay dorm. But after this I had mad respect from the inmates. Oh in I DID NOT HAVE TO USE PROFANITY JUST SIMPLE RESPECTFUL AND GETTING STRAIGHT TO THE POINT WITH ASSERTIVENESS.

Anthony you mentioned creative writing and that is part of where knowing the book is important. We could write a guy for say disrespect which was never going to carry any weight but if it rose to a certain level it was possible to write it as delaying a peace officer in the performance of their duties, a much more serious charge. The key is KNOWING the elements that prove a paricular rules violation.
@TierTalk

Russ Hamilton well said. That is why we need to know the rules just as good as the inmates, if not, better
@ckez4724
@ckez4724 5 лет назад
Very simple. Like gang said. Creative writing. When he interrupts your count. Give verbal direction to the inmate to stop! Restart your count so on camera it shows him messing with your duties. Complete your count. Then call your supervisor and explain that an inmate is interfering with your duties and he needs to go to seg for interfering with safety or security of the building. Which is effecting your ability to conduct your duties. Or shakedown that cube or that cell. But I would start with the first one.

I had a similar problem. I started at 19 so it was "hey lil boi whatchu doing in here" Ignoring something semi threatening like that was my first move but it was certainly something my FTO said would get out of hand fast (yes thank god we had an fto program) i simply walked over to the next inmate who said something and said "good morning sir how are you doing you need anything?" I said it sternly with eye contact. No threat of violence, no use of force, no write up. Just showing confidence in myself and i never had another problem of that sort. Such a simple fix I fully expect to get physical or to be met with "yeah i do have a problem" but it worked out for the best

I have come to learn that context is everything and there are never any two situations that are identical. Given this there are multiple right and wrong answers. in that scenario I would pry start taking time from them, or minor writeups and make it known. Some issues you can handle face to face in a few words, others you need to make it clear and public im still new to corrections however I gained a lot of experience from the military and many of the leadership principles i learned in my 5 years there apply equally here, just modified as they are inmates, not my Marines

First and foremost, do not let that disrespect interfere with whatever you are doing at the time.Complete your count or whatever and then speak to the inmate. I have told the inmate directly, that disrespect has negative consequences. There are tons of things that I did to assist inmates in their schooling, or in problem solving, checking up on requests to the social worker etc that were not a requirement of the job, and those things depended on the level of respect given to me by the inmate. I always respected their humanity, and expected the same in return. Inmates are very connected to what they say, as the words are part of their code. "acting like a goof" vs "are a goof" as an example, so getting an inmate to apologize of show respect goes a long way. The easiest method to minimize these issues is to be a professional, say what you do and do what you say, be consistent with your levels of control and discipline, and never manipulate an inmate, nothing will kill your rep faster than that. A CO can have a good rep with the inmates which is their motivator to treat you with respect. Don't take anything an inmate does or says at face value, as they are always looking for the edge, but stand tall and follow the rules. I have for example been called an asshole by an inmate, so the next inmate who came and spoke to me I treated poorly, when asked why I was not acting like myself I said "well that guy said I was an asshole, so I'm going to live up to that" needless to say that the first inmate soon apologized, and things returned to normal. I also built in a mental deflector to disrespect, a sort of "delivery denied" approach to the inmates, and they soon learned that it was just better to respect me. I have heard them telling new inmates that I was straight and a good one to speak to, as I listened. I didn't always do things, but I was willing to listen, if they weren't breaking the rules. They knew they couldn't get around me, but they respected me.

Experienced this today. It was my second say working in the jail. I'm still in training, but my CTO is our because of covid. The inmates were being catcalling me all day and running their mouths at me. It's difficult because I don't know all the rules yet, so I don't know what I can and can't do, but I'm learning a lot. Couldn't agree more. Not only for a disrespectful comment to staff but also be consistent in all things corrections. If incarcerated are having to be told to sit or stand for count. Address the behavior as their requirement to abid by the rules policy and procedures and you will not tolerate their disrespect of your respect of your consistency.

Agreed it has to be handled situationally. We have to set to tone of expectations, limits, and discipline. After that is set in the unit/facility then we can use our discretion to handle situations and employ a variety of strategies. From talking under them to bring down the tone to questioning where the disrespect is coming from to writing a report - and other options in between.

Flip the Dorm. Gather some officers, and do a mass search of everyone but the leader. The rest of the dorm will start to see the connection. Or, call the leader into a private talk and as he's walking back into open pop, loudly say something like "Thanks for the info" Most of all, never loose sight of who you are or why you are there. These inmates will try to impress upon you how tough they are because of what they did to be in prison or how long they've been in prison. That's all well and good. It's cute. They were put in that situation....You chose to be there. That's how badass you are. You chose step through those gates and keep order. Keep that in your mind and in your heart and you'll do fine.

Idk how county jails work. If it’s disrespect to another staff member, I would walk up to that cell and tell him to step out and shakedown that room. Take all the petty crap and ALL of it. Usually that sorts them out. If not there are other ways. But usually a nice shakedown if their room and belongings is all it takes to show you mean business. Inmates got whatever is coming to them. Also if it’s during counts, let’s them wait. If they ain’t compliant either announce it to the whole unit that you got all day to wait if they don’t wanna comply. Which in turn makes then stay in the cell longer. Usually they shut up.

I’m sure that the responses will change depending upon what state you work in and again then if it’s county or a state prison. Where I personally work it would not be allowed whatsoever, and the inmate would most of the time face a disciplinary report and head to confinement. Period. If the disrespect comes after something else like you mentioned AFTER having placed handcuffs on him or something similar, that’s a different story, and I agree with you fully. Assuming it happens during count itself, a time that should be dead silent with no interruptions, depending on the severity of the situation, I would possibly write two reports - one for disrespect and one for not complying with count. I would also like to make one thing clear that I cannot stress enough, and it’s something I have done from day one, and I encourage all others to do it, and if you do not do this, it’s never too late to change: creative writing is good but never, EVER lie. There is no reason to do that. If you can’t send an inmate to confinement for something, don’t invent a situation that is not there. You’ll get him on another day for something confinement worthy. Great topic, and if it’s a continual thing as this person describes, that means, yes, as you noted, it appears control has already been lost. This may also not be the best thing to say, but if inmates continually make fun of your weight, that’s unacceptable, but also for your own health you should possibly truly attempt to start losing that weight. That’s another topic, and I know many of us are not in the best shape ever, but if inmates are doing it daily, while not acceptable, perhaps for health reasons and for your family, do your best to start a lifestyle change (off topic regarding this, but I truly feel it’s important).

I completely agree that if you make the example out of one it sends the message to the rest of the unit. If it becomes an issue where it escalates and the inmate has to be lugged out to seg then so be it. When you’re doing your rounds in the future and an inmate becomes disrespectful all it will take is a little “ive lugged guys for less” and it will stop.

At my institution disrupting count is a lock up charge and will be written up. There are so many factors involved here. Once he gets that one inmate in check the others will most likely fall in place because let’s face it they follow the leader. My first day back on the job after knee surgery was Monday. I was on an easy building, but they still think your new. Except the ones that have been there awhile. One inmate likes to suck up to the officers, officer’s pet if you will. She will do absolutely anything you tell her to do without complaint, but she is messy with other inmates creating a disturbance. Her thought is she has us in her pocket so she is untouchable. She was dead wrong Monday. One of her victims produced letters written by the messy inmate apologizing. I shook her down to be certain she had wrote the letters. The warden was notified and this inmate was promptly removed from the program building back to general pop and it’s a rough building. The next day the atmosphere was very sedate on the building. That one action reinforced my respect.

When I am met with this type of issue, I never fully ignore it. If the inmate makes a comment that causes the dorm or other inmates to get fired up, I put a stop to it right then and there. If the inmate is just joking around and not in a malicious way, I will fire one right back at him. I usually say something like “your locked up 24/7 with nothing better to do and that’s the best you can come up with?” Most the time they will laugh and I move on. A lot of these inmates are just trying to get that human interaction from outside people. Now I always keep it professional and never let it get out of line. I just don’t think that being a Correctional Officer requires you to never show any type of emotion. You are still human. I work with the mentality of “to get respect you must give respect.” If the inmate is being malicious, then I step it up a notch. Rather than curse them out and make a scene, I will go and use the institutional policy and procedures to my advantage. I will have the inmate as well as all others that love in his area go take a seat at the dayroom tables. I will then proceed to search their bunks/cells and take them down to the bare minimum. I will only allow them to have what they are permitted to have per their inmate manual. I will take any and all contraband. If anything I find is hoarded, changed or altered any anyway shape or form from its original condition or if it is being used for anything other then how it was originally intended to be used for I take it. Anything I can charge to their inmate account for damages caused by them I will. (Writing on the walls, destroyed issued property, ETC) This usually gets the job done. If the above way fails, I step it up a notch by making them do work in the dorm. I make them clean to my standards. Not their version of clean, but mine. If they fail to follow orders then they suffer the consequences and are taken to the hole. It’s really that simple. Also be sure to document everything that occurs as well as what you did to rectify the issue. This way when you get your shift commander involved, you have a case built against the inmate showing that you tried all other methods and that this inmate needs to have the punishment taken up a notch or two.

It had inmate attacks almost every day, Now Its more than 1.5 on average every day. When inmates feel mistreated, whether its reasonable or not, we want them to show, in order to talk them into understanding of the things that caused him to do that, Or they will take it out on someone who is vulnerable consciously or un-consciously.(But, so far most prisons/jails have been in a state of emergency, all critically short of frontline officers .Few have that kind of empathy to be able to do it)

The inmates tested us so I hosted ignored their taunts, since they're all male they went for my Co female trainee. She ignored them, didn't help. The c.o we shadowed didn't say anything or explain how to correct them. The Sargent and LTs seem to give them leeway, Wade gives special privileges to certain pods, let them bang on doors, give them what they ask for, etc. They all seem to group up and start shit at any give time while we saved lunch, dinner, Head count, gave them water, cleaning supplies. They went crazy over the remote, TV not having volume, Banging the pod door and LT gave them the remote. I'm alittle worried just by the look of things.

This happened literally yesterday. Came on nightshift we have been told to try and not use the intercom after 10 because some go to bed after dinner they need to be out the door early for work. My co-worker used the system to call down an inmate who had pots and pans and had not even started it . One inmate came down later and said "yeah thanks for waking everyone up you fat f@*k.". And walked away. When he came back he said that again. My co worker just said goodnight . After he left he said "that guy is such a jerk". We did talk about calling people down and how we do need to change from stopping at 11 to stopping at 10. I saw the inmate next morning go out for a smoke break. When one other person was with him I went out and asked him to come for a walk with me. He came over we started walking he said "is this about what I said last night"? I said "yes that was really disrespectful". We went back and forth about why he said what he did. It ended when we got back around to the front and I said "I understand that you were upset because you haven't felt like he listened last time you asked him not to go over the intercom after 10. What you said was inappropriate and very disrespectful. It's not ok at all. You can be upset but you need to reign it in. If you feel like you can't address something without being respectful than leave it alone till later or talk to someone else. Talk to me. I will work on being on the intercom late not happening again but you cannot talk that way. He did apologize to me thanked me for saying I was going to work on it with my co worker and said he would try not to lose his cool. My co worker is also overweight and I hear a lot about him being loud at count opening doors loud etc. That I let go but this one inmate I felt went to far when he walked by was very loud and name called. And I told him that as well that the name calling and bad language was out of line and not ok. He seemed to get the message and didn't apologize to my co worker but he did apologize to me.

I think your reaction or lack of reaction on rounds is correct. Don't rise to the bait until you want to and are ready. In direct communication, as you say speak to it, unless like Anthony says you are in a use of force situation, then the inmate will say lots that means little. The place I worked the units were barred not walled so sound carried, and sometimes I entered the unit and just stated, "what was that, I couldn't hear through the door" which usually ended with a "no one said anything boss" therefore my win, and I could let it drop. Not recommended but true, first thing one morning an inmate was up demanding something that I told him would be dealt with after breakfast, and he stated "what an asshole". the next inmate to approach me was a regular rounder who was also the corridor-man, and asked a question, I told him to take a hike, and he asked me what was up, so I said apparently I'm an asshole and I'm trying to live up to that. He walked into the unit and next thing I knew the inmate who had labeled me came up and apologized. So things went back to normal. Its about picking your battles, keeping in mind that there is a big difference between yelling from the back and direct communication, which must be addressed. At shift change we used to shake hands and use our last names. That respect we showed each other sent a clear message to the inmates of what we expected. If you jump at everything, they will continue to bait you.

This is a complex issue and no one or two tips are going to suffice in reining it in. You need a comprehensive approach but if other staff are letting everything slide and or your supervisor isn't giving you enough backing the headway you make through other techniques will not happen as quickly. First off most of this is about pressure which comes in the form of negative attention and write ups. Inmates in a certain dorm or block are calling names they need attention. More time spent there, more searches, more write ups not for behavior but for what you are finding etc. Now let me say inmates are dumb and pressure by itself does not work well. Any one who trains horses knows that pressure doesn't work, it's the release of pressure that clues them into the correct behavior. So keep constants steady pressure, negative attention and some write ups on them. When they let up, you let up too. This takes time, effort and thoughtfulness. Also if you have ever programmed a teacher. The whole class agrees everyone will pay rapt attention when the teacher stands in a certain spot or only when pacing etc. In a few weeks they are subconsciously trained. Make sure those inmates aren't taking your head out of the game because you walked in on something or you are too close to some dope or a phone or they are delaying you while someone down the way is hiding contraband or finishing a fight. Your weight is an easy subject for them to pick out and it will be used for a distraction if that is what is called for. Corrections is an onion and right now your weight mentioned as disrespect is one layer, manipulation, diversion, programming are all layers you have yet to see.
@TierTalk

@russhamilton3800
@russhamilton3800 5 лет назад
Absolutely and when you are new you are not going to see or understand the nuances of the deeper more three dimensional game. I want him to at minimum just know there is a deeper game and that he can attack the problem just by understanding those principles about constant pressure, negative attention and disciplinary write ups SHOULD get the ball rolling in the right direction. If he can get som momentum going in the right direction and see improvement it will be both a character and career building excercise.

It depends on the rapport you have with the inmate. Now as far as them making snide remarks about weight, I just tell that inmate that his wife clearly didn't have a problem with my weight. Every now and then, you have to dish it back. It may not necessarily be the right thing to do, but some times they are testing your wits. Some times, a little embarrassment works in shutting down the disrespect.

Anthony said it very well. I would have whatever inmate I thought was guilty cleaning the toilets every night. Also you could address them at count time and let them know that you will not be turning the TV on for an additional half hour because there are several inmates that don't seem to be able to show respect to you. Let them know that you will continue to leave it off for a half hour after every count until you see the same respect from them as you give them. I am not a big fan of punishing the whole group for the actions of a few, but sometimes when there are several at fault it is the best way to handle the situation. But before you do anything, get with your Sergeant and let him/her know what you want to do. They may know something special about your particular situation that would make my advice a bad idea. Every situation is different and might call for a different solution.

Get a habit of saying something like " you're silly" or "Don't be silly" instead of "ignoring it" whenever someone is rude to you not just from inmate. That shows you are listening and not let anyone get to you easily, also let the negative vibration( from the negative remarks) return back to that person let him/her have opportunity to refine or correct his/her statement to show that you are a person who really cares about him/her, and especially helpful in dealing with inmate by easy tension.

Tier Talk Correctionsone RU-vid Channel You are right, I used to be more affirmative, now I am paying more attention on easing tension due to the facts that way too many inmate-inmate assaults (from just about everyday to more than once per day), and inmate on staff assaults(about once every month, in a jail with 1,200 offenders in 24 pods, and they already know cameras are all over to catch every move they make.) Then again if you really say "its not tolerated" that's what some offenders like to hear, they would get a kick out of it and feel like to do it again to get to you for fun.

Good question, the answer is this " there are two ways, one is the traditional way , the second one is the 'direct supervision' way", and why this is very important because in a " well run direct supervision facility ,inmate assaults is rarely happening, but in our city jail , the violence is happening from 'almost everyday' two years ago to now, Oct 2018, "more than once per day'. And few professional people(someone like you) are not familiar with the 'new generation jail's parricidal and dynamics" that is the way to have every detention center become a constitutional standard detention center for detainees, and also a safe and secure working place for line staff.

As a CO, is there a need to "draw a line in the sand" and operate with a given consequence to disrespect (shakedown the cell, loss of TV privilege for the unit as others have mentioned, etc.) or is it something that is better to handle on a case by case situation? I have a couple of relatives who are CO's who describe their process and it seems that they sometimes operate in a quid pro quo mindset (treat me with disrespect and it will be returned in kind). It's a career path that I'm looking into and as yet have no hands-on experience, so I don't want to be quick to judge something that I don't have a perspective to understand, but inmates and staff can just be having a bad day. To sum up, where does a GOOD CO draw the line between consistent professionalism and trying to maintain fairness in their dealings with inmates? Or am I completely off base in assuming that these are mutually exclusive ideas?
@TierTalk
@TierTalk 5 лет назад
Samuel Pierce it’s a great question. In the video I mentioned having control. That is the key. We expect inmates to have bad days. But we have to be aware of our surroundings. If the inmate is outright disrespectful and other inmates see you do nothing, that is an issue. In the end, the disrespect should be addressed. How it is addressed is depends on the individual. But, by addressing it, control goes back into the hands of the officer.

I’m in a room (no coworkers) with inmates shackled to the chair while on the dialysis machine. Since I’m not technically a prison employee, all I hear are complaints regarding COs. I mostly ignore what they say, or just comment ‘that’s too bad’ etc. So should I say anything? To the inmates or COs? Should I ignore it? The only advice I’ve been given is to only talk to them about medical/dialysis related issues. I hear a lot...I’m in the room with them for 5 hours/ 3 times a week. I’m just curious to know, from an officers view, if I should do anything.

@sarahivsutterb747
@sarahivsutterb747 5 лет назад
These inmates there who bully this correctional officer because of his body must get a disciplinary reaction because it is unacceptable and disgusting to bully people for their bodies and all the other things! I think if correctional officers do not make it clear who is in control and if they don't standing their grounds and borders it can easily get out of control and order! With inmates in the institutions it is the same thing as it is with little kids, you as correctional officers have to be more like adult parents and treat these inmates there in this manner and order and you have to make it in an prompt, strict, clear and straight order! If this doesn't work, so then you should make it clear for all inmates in the tier or unit with the orders of lockdown for all involved inmates there in ad-seg and the other inmates in a temporary lockdown for a couple of days and you have to give them a bulletin with clear orders and responsibilities and maybe new restrictions because of this unacceptable bullying and disrespect for a correctional officer! Further, I would definitely make a report in the inmates papers for this incident and I would definitely make a disciplinary hearing with the inmate/inmates who was/were involved in this case and maybe I would make a restitution order to the inmate/inmates from the money of their commissary account, that's it! Stay your grounds and show them your position, that's it!!!!! Lovely greetings from Sarah and have a wonderful weekend and stay safe out there and take care of you all together! The answer is nothing you can do that will effectively change their behavior. With all the cameras and the way society is today the inmate has more rights than you do. Anytime you do take action it gets scrutinized...good old days of a punch in the face (which worked like a charm) is over unless ofcourse attacked first but these inmates know that and are cowards. Sit there and do your shift and then go home. Taking action these days can get you in more hot water than if you sit and do nothing.
