What would be a better way to segment the users here? I noticed that it led to some pretty generic pain points. I always worry that my user groups are not mutually exclusive, and collectively exhaustive. Here's how I would have approached user segmentation: Users of Google maps for restaurant discovery/exploration can be bucketed into two major groups: 1) Individuals (those who use GMaps to discover places to eat) 2) The restaurant businesses (those who are being discovered on GMaps as destinations to eat at) There are some sub-segments of Individual users, where I'm slicing based on user intent at the time they use the app, so ultimately, the user segments look like this: 1) Individuals - those looking for a place to eat immediately (e.g.: within the hour) - those planning ahead for a meal later in the day, but still a few hours away - those planning ahead for a meal 1 or more days in advance. 2) The restaurant businesses From here, I would have prioritized Individuals, because there's a lot more scope for impact on engagement there. There are more individuals looking for places to eat than there are restaurants using Google Maps to manage their reviews, analytics and restaurant info etc. In the sub-categories, I would have prioritized those looking for a place to eat immediately because I think there's more room for improvement there, especially compared to our competitors (e.g.: Yelp), and because I anticipate that the pain points here are greater, and therefore a solution will have more impact. Then brainstorm pain points specific to people who use GMaps to find a place to eat immediately. E.g.: 1) option paralysis, and takes too long to filter through options, reviews, wait times, reservation availability, pictures, menu, etc, 2) sometimes you have to call restaurants you want to eat at to find out if anybody has cancelled/no-show within the hour. 3) you put yourself on multiple waitlists and have to keep tabs on them separately by either checking physical location or calling etc...

Thanks for posting this. It's ok to select a more general user group, especially when that user group represents the needs of a large percentage of the user base. It helps you come up with ideas that will be beneficial to the whole user base.

wow, that's a good work, To add to the solutions: I'd 'add party of how many' and big plus for what friend preferred, I know my friends and their eating habits so it kind of can be no brainer to try or not try some of things. Also, I'd want to see the avg traffic time and how much time they spend in the place. Specifically for restaurants, some people go to their favorite restaurant only while other go to try different food, in such cases the data may be skewed a little so I liked the survey/questionnaire idea which can show me customized food preferences like bland, hot, rich(oily), light etc. Google map already takes and uses places review from user, may be it can ask user to opt sharing the restaurant visit, pics, review update with contact list, google contact at least.

found the interviewee very structured. However, I think the interview kind of glossed over the brainstorming process of identifying different goals when it comes to improvement - is it more user satisafaction, is it revenue ? also it was kind of interesting to see that the metrics came ahead of the pain points and even the solution. just wondering if most people would follow this structure.

It's your decision what goal you'd like to chose (as long as you can well articulate it to the interviewer). It's best to have a goal at first and then pick the metrics in the end. The metrics are meant to evaluate your success in achieving your goal after you implement the product improvement idea

Fantastic review of the improvement question - thanks for the video. I've been enjoying using your website as well! In my opinion some feedback on: 1- Gabe's chosen solution (top 3 restaurants) and initial success metrics (# restaurant searches // median searches/active monthly users): personally I find it hard to understand how showing the top 3 restaurants can actually increase engagement in terms of # searches. I would argue that if that algo actually works well, you could risk dropping number of searches? 2- Bijan's feedback on early metrics chosen by Gabe (24'): I don't fully agree, in my opinion it's great to clarify and start quantifying how you would go at measuring the goal. That should drive the solutions and not the other way around, as it could be risky? In anyway, keep up this great work - thanks

Choosing success metrics before diving into the solution could influence your brainstorming process for the solution. Eg. If the restaurant was never searched but was pushed to the user's device as a notification where the user tapped on it and within a few days navigated to that location - will also attribute to the success of the feature. Increase in the number of searches may have little to do in such a case.

I think you raised a great point by pointing out number of queries may go down if restaurant algo is performing well. The goal of google map search is to have users complete their tasks as quickly as possible and perform as fewer search as possible. Thus a good metric is number of queries per user session. Decrease in that number in the short run is indicative of better search engine performance. To facilitate decision making, we should also take a look at number of user sessions. If it increases, we definitely have a winner. Finally, I agree with you that number of searchers is not a valid measure for user engagement. I think number of user sessions should be a measure of user engagement. It is directionally unambiguous and in-line with long term business goal, which is to maximize google map market share.

I agree, giving restaurant recommendations may lead to conversion of diving deeper into the restaurant card and navigation/phone calls can be KPI for this features success.

My suggestion is to leave the brainstorming quiet times in there so one can learn from and be comfortable with those.

Great answers! I also like his structures and reactions. Just a bit curious, I am wondering if it is better to elaborate more or even ask the interviewer for suggestions when deciding a specific direction to narrow down? Here the candidate picks "restaurants", which is definitely a good way to go, but I am just thinking maybe there is a better to say so?
@ProductManagementExercises
@ProductManagementExercises 3 года назад
I think it's more decisive to suggest a direction and ask the interviewer if they are ok with the suggested direction. Remember that PM's don't get a lot of directions

What’s the reason to choose median number of restaurant searchers per active user per month? Also is month here appropriate? Thanks.
@ProductManagementExercises
@ProductManagementExercises 3 года назад
It can be argued that by looking at monthly cycles, you're covering the majority of user groups in one cycle since most people go to restaurants multiple times per month and this will give you enough data points for your decisions as a PM. how long do you think it should be? Re: your comment on median, do you think it should be something else (e.g. average)? Feel free to share why.

I am wondering how long it is appropriate to ask the interviewer if I need to gather thoughts? 1 min or 2? Thanks.
@ProductManagementExercises

I suggest no more than 2 minutes. One minute would be ideal.

Weren't the answers too long unnecessarily?
@ProductManagementExercises
@ProductManagementExercises 3 года назад
Great question. During an interview, you should ideally keep the answer to about 20 minutes or less but sometimes, the interviewer wants to spend the whole hour to test you in one area. It's best to ask the interviewer at the beginning of the interview how much time they expect you to spend on answering it.

I honestly think this interview was not a winner. Can't design what you didn't define as a customer from the getgo, and it was unclear even what the improvement goals were. It boiled down to restaurants which honestly just sounded like the interviewees personal pet cause, and the implementation was a questionnaire? Because that's what Google maps users care about? More busy work? Incremental improvement of marginal utility.. Showed poor product sense and didn't feel organized either.
