How You Got Your Political Theory | Moral Foundation Theory

How did you come to support the political parties that you support? Are politics genetic? Are you innately designed to have whatever morals you have?
and how did you end up with that political Theory?
How did you end up with the morals that you have? Today, we're going to be using moral foundation theory and a bit of genetic disposition to figure out how your politics picked you.
moral foundation theory explains a lot about human nature and I thought this would be a great time to talk about it as the 2020 election between Donald Trump and Joe Biden's roles around.
we'll be looking to Emile Durkheim and collective effervescence to better understand tribalism and brain structure to better understand why some people are liberal and others are conservative.

I have always been intrigued with this because I have pretty opposite political views as my family and I get asked all the time how I ended up like this. I'm sure it has to do with my friends influence, but why I gravitated toward the friends that I did rather than ones more similar to my family is still an interesting question.

When you talked about the “loyalty/betrayal” morality i thought about how large companies often describe their employees as “families” or “team members” and I think this is interesting because it fosters an “us vs them” mentality. “You don’t work for Burger King, you’re a part of the McDonald’s team”. Often I’ve heard people compare the mentality of large corporations and cults, but this made me think that’s because it’s literally the same methodology. Obviously a cult is most effective the more cohesive they are and the less independent thought people have. A brand is most effective when it can convince you that they are superior to every other competitor. It also made me think of “Apple” vs “PC” people or like “console” v “pc”. Idk I’m probably overreaching here but I thought it was interesting.

We have a unstable government of social democrats, labour, greens, (love em) but because they needed a majority they had to take conservative centre-right wing party with them. From the three videos, I have watched I have decided to subscribe. You go on refreshing tangents with a cadence that is not hypnotic or sing-song-ly. I listen to all dialogue-oriented science, maths, and philosophy videos at 1.5 speed unless the dialogue is intensely packed with knowledge. I was able to retain your thoughts without drifting at 1.9 speed, I believe this from your well-worded discourse. It is great to hear a new voice in the realm of thought for the sake of thinking! 2:02 i do view things as individual ideas, but more than that i view similar things as almost the same. Substitutable, even if its not exactly substitutable, my mind will try to do so and i tend to agree with it even if it doesnt make sense. Whenever i explain this i have a hard time coming up with examples, instead i usually just explain how my eyes work when i look for something. Basically when im looking for something, any shape that looks vaguely like it seems to turn into whatever im looking for, until i grab it. Makes looking for things very frustrating. But i think this is just how my brain works. It applies to my thoughts as well.
@TacticusPrime

Politics is about how we manage our society for the good. I think certain attitudes toward how we should view what is good can definitely be genetic. The progressive attitude is to look ahead at the potential good that could be realized in the future if we change our society. The conservative attitude is to fear the alteration of what they see as already good within our society. But those aren't the only attitudes. The revolutionary attitude seeks to break the fundamental structures of society because they see them as unjust, and they are confident that the replacement can't be worse. The reactionary seeks to break the structures of society to recreate a past that they see as more pure and good than the present. In America, despite the voices of activists, the Democratic party remains a progressive one and not a revolutionary one. But the Republican party has long abandoned conservatism and has full on embrace reactionary politics. This is why a "both sides" attitude is so dangerous. The Republican party is ironically a threat to the republic itself.

Am I the only one who regularly checked on the Rubik's cube in the background, just so I didn't get tricked again? A beautiful video, a very wise one. Me, personally, I'm scared of all the big ideologies and large groups blindly believing in one system or one principle without daring to ask questions about it (and maybe that's why my overall philosophy is so individual). But still, with this video, you might have just explained to me why I feel so isolated in my country: because of the conservative values it mostly tends to favour the most. So, thank you for making me realize it, finally :)

In Poland it looks like the Polish constitution is worth exactly 500 zlotys a month (that's how much money the government gives you if you have a baby). Both the government elections and presidential elections were won by ultra-conservative party who discriminate LGBT groups, spread hatred and fear against other nationalities, and regularly break the constitution. I think Moral Foundations Theory is persuasive, but it is too pat. I don't think these kinds of things group that distinctly. I mean, for one thing some of them just seem made up, e.g. Loyalty vs Liberty. So there's something to that, but we need to step back from this temptation to categorize, and simply understand that there are inborn as well as learned behaviors that can influence us and emerge as, e.g. political leanings.

Aaaahhh!!!! Was this the treatise on Tribe? Either way, I got some bones to pick (see what I did there?): Did humans (homo sapiens) ultimately eradicate Neanderthals (hominids in the genus Homo)? Or due to interbreding events that took place around 50,000 to 55,000 years ago in the _Middle East_ (Not Europe as many would assume), was the Neanderthal line simply biologically assimilated into what we now call modern humans? Thousands of years later, humans moving into East Asia interbred with _Denisovans,_ whom at the time ranged from Siberia to Southeast Asia...and like the Neanderthals, are no longer found on the planet. Just 12 years ago, _science did not know about_ the Denisovan hominin group. Moreover, Neanderthals and Denisovans also interbred. Lets table the Denisovans for the time being. "The proportion of Neanderthal-inherited genetic material is about 1 to 4 percent [later refined to 1.5 to 2.1 percent] and is found in all non-African populations ( well, except for the ancient modern humans that bred with Neanderthals and _migrated back to Africa,_ where they mixed with the modern humans there, sharing bits of Neanderthal DNA.). It is suggested that 20 percent of Neanderthal DNA survived in modern humans, notably expressed in the skin, hair and diseases of modern people. Neanderthal DNA is 99.7 percent identical to *modern human* DNA, versus, for example, 98.8 percent for modern humans and chimps. Are we to accept the theory that this 0.03% genetic delta is responsible for so many potential human behavioral traits? I would submit that _Factually,_ homo sapiens (humans), Neanderthals and Denisovans are all the same species (otherwise we wouldn't be able to interbred in the first place). I would go further and suggest that behavior traits are more likely to be triggered by external cultural events. It would be just as easy to deduce that twins, growing up in the same household with the same family, could differ in their adult traits (politics) due to unique interactions _between themselves,_ and not due to a biological factor. I also would like to challenge the statement that our early ancestors were more Tribal than modern humans. Of course I am basing that on my own research as a college educated Scientist (unfortunately, my Science degree is in Physics). Nonetheless, I maintain the larger a population, coupled with modern communications, the * _More_ Tribalized humans become.* Additionally, science has a decent understanding of psychopaths. Studies show that psychopaths have reduced connections between the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC), the part of the brain responsible for sentiments such as empathy and guilt, and the amygdala, which mediates fear and anxiety. More importantly, all psychopaths are narcissistic. It is this type of person, that when armed with mass communication technology (from books, scribes, and oracles to the _InterWebs_ ) can easily manipulate the masses of their fellow humans into adhoc tribes. Adhoc meaning created or done for a particular purpose as necessary. Only psychopaths (and some sociopaths) have the uber-narcissistic-level motivational drive and lack of emotional feeling to put themselves in this position. The adhoc motive of the psychopath is individual self-actualization. (Think about it; what "normal" human would actually *_want to be_*_ a politician??_ ) All living organisms on Earth have survival firmware programming code. Human Tribal nature is part of survival firmware programming (as I have mentioned previously) at a higher level due to more sophisticated communication. It is the mortar that holds together the Maslow hierarchy of needs pyramid structure (8-stage model). Maslow broke down our types of needs into two categories: *D-Needs* (D for Deficit) are needs we are motivated to fulfill because without them, we feel some sort of longing. Without food we are hungry, without shelter we feel unsafe..etc. *B-Needs* (B for Being) are the high-level needs that we are motivated to fulfill once all of our basic needs are met. An argument can be made that (almost) all living creatures _require_ D-needs to survive. But only homo sapiens must have B-needs - once D-needs have been met. [note: I would modify Maslow's hierarchy of needs into a more modern version that includes various thicknesses of the mortar of Tribe between the layers, and exchange the "Esteem" layer with an far more accurate "Dignity" layer.] D-needs are entirely social. At the B-levels of Maslow's hierarchy, we are exponentially more socially inter-dependent than our ancestors who struggled for millennia attempting to satisfy D-level requirements. Dude, I have been typing this comment for more than an hour....let me know what you think of the above position.
@TravisGilbert
@TravisGilbert 4 года назад
This is not the tribe video more of a warm-up to that one. It's very possible that other humans (Neanderthals) were assimilated into our gene pool instead of out-competed. I tend to put more weight into the idea that we didn't get along very well as today, we struggle to get along with people who appear slightly different tho clearly the same species. i.e. Race. It is Completely possible that this only a modern element but, I struggle to view our ancestors as tolerant enough to envelop a separate population. The definition of species is a very blurry thing especially in regards to humans and hominids. I think you are onto something here, people are invested in neanderthals being something different or lesser, and us being the only "real" humans. Twins could differ in terms of experience and have different politics and many other differences. I only meant to bring attention to the genetic element which seems to often be left out. I think i miscommunicated that point in regards to tribalism. When saying we are descended from the most tribal of the tribalistic what I mean is that in terms of ancient humans the more tribalistic were more likely to survive and thus have offspring. The natural selection process of humans favors tribalist behavior is what I meant to say, we have gotten no less tribalistic over time. I agree.

A more accurate model would involve far more social context and less esteem as it's debatable if self-esteem actually even exists. brilliant thoughts as always my friend.

I have always thought that political party loyalties seem to be strengthened by the need to surround yourself with people who not only agree with you, but that give you positive feedback/validation, which I’m sure has a psychological reward response but otherwise - to me - I couldn’t really understand the deep motivation and drive that some have in defending whatever “their side” is, especially depicting them as infallible - but the idea that it’s likely one step further - more akin to “groups = survival” and this is just our version of those same groups that humans were in 1,000 years ago, just trying to survive and perpetuate genetics. We’re just in a world now where people are simultaneously less homogenous, but more able to find those echo chambers because of technology. And by less homogenous, I just mean people’s motivations are less homogenous. Previously, likely every tribe on the globe all had similar goals. Food, shelter, the survival of future generations. Those motivations have lost the forefront as they’re “easier” to attain, so now other motivations have moved in. I am fascinated!

I think what you said about Neanderthals is not quite correct. They were from Europe and maybe kinda the middle east but it is believed they one interbred with us so they are still here in that way. And two that an ice age and a lack of resources wiped alot of them out, also because they were not big into migration over long distances where homo sapiens were happy to move further. So they got south quicker

I'm not so sure that being more Democratic is equivalent to being more open. After all, the Democratic party champions government control (albeit seemingly under the noses of a great deal of Democrats) and government control means less openness or freedom. Also, those many many teens I've talked to on my writing site who lean more Democratic, are far less open and less willing to share than others in my experience.

I paused your video 5 minutes in to go find this TedTalk: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8SOQduoLgRw.html and 3 minutes after that, you cite his work as inspiration. The Ted Talk is nice for the bonus plot point graphs that show where liberals/conservatives overlap in morality, and where they are markedly different.

@@TravisGilbert Know that this is coming from a point of support from me to you and to your audience: be very careful where you pull your information from. I'm not talking about using sites like wikipedia or anything; that has largely developed into a relatively trustworthy source on surface level topics. What I am advising is to always look into a source before using them for a video. I get that this requires much more work but, as always though more so in this day and age, you have to research your sources. I'm not saying you did anything wrong in this video. I'm mainly saying this because of the Jordan Peterson usage. He is a dangerous person to cite and there are many others like him. Why he is so dangerous is that when addressing basic psychological concepts and more straightforward psychological research his opinions and assessments are generally fine and well founded, as you would expect from a Ph.D. in psych. However, whenever you start getting into his more philosophical stuff, including 12 rules for life: an antidote to chaos where he talks about his lobster hierarchies, he is stating his own opinions as if they were supported by evidence but almost never are. He's a big fan of Jung who, despite being incredibly creative, was not a scientist as we would define it today. That's not to say Jung was uneducated, just that his work was antithetical to the scientific method despite all of the awards he won. Jung was an armchair philosopher who honestly would have killed it as a literary analyst then and, if he were alive today, would probably be a billionaire if he made youtube videos on books analyzing them. He was incredible at conceptualizing themes in human behavior and I think Peterson recognizes this. However, assuming that the world works on diluted forms of Jung's archetypes and that his (Peterson's) poor understanding of evolution actually combines with this to support his beliefs is just not science. It's at best: 1) philosophizing which is fine if done on your own or with willing friends or, at worst; 2) standing on the shoulder of a giant to sell a self-help book to insecure males in order to make a quite impressive profit by telling them what they want to hear in a way that sounds smart.

@@TravisGilbert 10 seconds for care/harm. 15 seconds for fairness/cheating. 1 minute 43 seconds for loyalty and betrayal. I get the little history 'tangent' but it still counts as attention to this one category. Most importantly, emotionally connecting with the notion "I do find something beautiful...". It follows again 10 and 15 seconds before delving into the shiny, new 6th category, spending 1 minute 45 seconds and with its own tangent. (Correction: it's about 20 seconds for the 6th category. Your tangent is about what innate means. The previous bias still stands) I like that your invested. I appreciate Austin McConnell for blasting your channel. You deserve it. Great Job!

if when the going gets tough in the US so people switch over to the Republicans during that time then why did both world wars have Democratic candidates as president? Just honest question not trying to beef anyone up.

5:55 I feel like that would actually be a good topic for the next video. Why do we care if animals go extinct, when in the end, we're all just brains in different bodies. Sure, a lot of them are vital to their ecosystems, but these animals ( and us) would inevitably go extinct because of shifting environments. Climate change was gonna happen anyway, we just made it happen faster. (Note: I'm not trying to defend us making animals go extinct, just a shower thought I had)

@@TravisGilbert Most people in Scotland don't speak Scots as a first language either, despite the Nationalist Scottish governments attempts to get people to speak Gaelic, most people just speak English with regional variations/ dialects. There is SOME debate as to whether Scots itself is even a language, but I don't want to make people angry, so I won't get into that xD
