Why Is It So Hard To Change Someone's Mind?

Why is it so hard to change someone's mind? Today will be discussing how to change someone's mind and also how to change society, along with how you can change your own mind. Status quo bias and confirmation bias frequently hold society back. We'll be doing this by looking at the historical example of Copernicus and Semmelweis two people who changed the world but really only after there deaths. like the old saying science progresses one funeral at a time. looking at how to actually change someone it comes down to emotions and morals. you will need more than facts.

I once did a debate in highschool. While I had the best argument at the debate, I lost the debate because I didn't state my sources as I was speaking. This was surprising to me, but it makes a lot of sense. People will side with information with labels that they trust. It isn't about the information, it's about its presentation of the information. If it is appealing enough, they may believe you.

That's one thing I never understood about American politics. Loyalty to whichever party one has always voted for seems to trump actual facts, and when one's own party does something disturbing it's always accepted, yet when the other party does, it's evil. When the other party expands the powers of their president there's always a lot of criticism, but once their own party runs things, those powers never get rolled back, because they come in handy.

I really liked this video. However, I did want to clarify one point about the Heliocentric model proposed by Copernicus: it was less predictively accurate than the Geocentric model, which is why nearly no scientists adopted it. He made the mistake of assuming planetary orbits were circular, rather than the elliptical orbits we accept today. This led to enough predictive inaccuracy that the geocentric model was a better predictor of celestial motion. Kepler wins over many in the scientific community when his proposal of elliptical orbits and varying orbital speeds makes simple predictions that are highly accurate. There are still a few holdouts who want to know why this was as it was, for which we needed Newton's explanation of gravity. To me this is a striking feature of progress in nearly all aspects of life is how incredibly non-linear it is and how dependent it is on a constellation of factors which may be hard to see beforehand.

And today we're seeing some of that same mentality play out w.r.t. wearing masks. It also doesn't help that the facts seem to change on an ongoing basis. First we were told they were useless because there was a shortage and medical professionals needed them more than we did. Then we were told they don't protect us, but they protect others from us. And now we discovered that in fact, they do protect us as well, albeit not 100%. This of course makes things even more confusing because it appears that "all those smart experts" don't know either and seem to be "making things up as they go". It'll be a while before all the facts are known, and it'll take even longer before the general public finally shares those views. For the most part, since there will always be people who simply never will accept this knowledge.

The thought about human brains being designed for survival instead of truth got me thinking about our relationship with technology and the algorithms running in the backgrounds of all our lives, and how hard it is to predict and understand the societal implications of these things as machines based on some objective "truth." Great video, and those are some great thoughts. I really appreciate that you posit a solution to the problem at the end; it's something I see so rarely these days

Looking back, I can clearly see I didn't fully understand my home state until I moved a couple of time to other states in very different parts of the country. I lacked broader context to interpret my experiences. For example, I didn't realize how much I love pine trees until I moved somewhere without pine trees and then back again. I also didn't notice the local culture until I experienced a variety of cultures. As a Yankee living near the Mason-Dixon line, I made a woman very angry by not knowing the difference between sweetened tea and sweet tea, but now that I live in the South I know these two are not the same thing.

I think framing things in terms of fairness has been so expertly pulled off by the Right demanding fairness from the Left, considering fairness is what the Left advocates, usually the right doesn't advocate fairness over loyalty, which is why it's so insidious.

Patriotism is a control tool of the Tribal Aristocracy. There is no more a powerful and motivational component of human nature than tribe. None. Humans are innately tribal. We have a strong need to belong to groups and maintain fulfilling relationships with others. This need to belong _warps our reasoning ability._ The first person _known_ to have proposed a heliocentric system was Aristarchus of Samos (c. 270 BC). The pagan Martianus Capella (5th century A.D.) wrote that both Venus and Mars rotated around the Sun, and not the earth. Later scientist from India debated the whole Ptolemaic system in 499 A.D. as well. Islamic astronomer Ibn al-Haytham in his book Al-Shukūk 'alā Baṭalamiyūs branded the Ptolemaic system an impossibility in 1029 A.D. Giordano Bruno was burnt at the stake in 1600 in Italy by his own tribe (the Roman Catholic Church) for his beliefs. These _included_ that the earth orbited the sun and that the stars were distant suns surrounded by their own planets, and that these planets might foster life of their own. (also convicted of: *holding "opinions"* contrary to the Catholic faith and speaking against it and its ministers; *holding "opinions"* contrary to the Catholic faith about the Trinity, divinity of Christ, and Incarnation; *holding "opinions"* contrary to the Catholic faith pertaining to Jesus as Christ; *holding "opinions"* contrary to the Catholic faith regarding the virginity of Mary, mother of Jesus; *holding "opinions"* contrary to the Catholic faith about both Transubstantiation and Mass; ...and my personal favorite: dealing in magics and divination.) It did not matter a jot to anyone whether this was true or not other than his tribe of course, (They would have been exposed as the frauds they were) and they killed him for his beliefs ...which turned out to be true. Similarly, The Catholic Church condemned Galileo in 1633 for proposing similar science based facts. Threatened with torture by the Inquisition, Galileo recanted on April 30, 1633. The Church didn't formally admit that Galileo had been wrongfully condemned *...until 1984.*

It's not that the geocentric model is false. It's that it takes a lot more rules and exceptions to explain than the heliocentric model. The geocentric model used to be the more elegant information before telescopes enabled us to discover more about stars and planetary movement. It is possible that one day we make a discovery that will make the heliocentric model look as inelegant as the geocentric does to us now.
@TravisGilbert
@TravisGilbert 3 года назад
Very true! I terrible at predictions though i would think that this is likely with the progression of science
@SylviusTheMad
@SylviusTheMad 3 года назад
The question is based on a false premise. Facts don't change. That's what makes them facts. The problem is that people draw conclusions in the absence of conclusive evidence, and then that conclusion takes the place of evidence in future decision-making. Rather than remember all the evidence, people just remember their conclusions, and this new evidence gets ignored (confirmation bias). The only way around this is to avoid drawing those initial conclusions. In the absence of conclusive evidence, conclude nothing. This avoids confirmation bias, because the new evidence gets to intermingle with the existing evidence to create an even larger pool of facts on which to base your conclusions once the evidence becomes conclusive.

Mobiles are balanced, but they move...in mostly predictable ways. The difficulty with mobiles is adding more elements that help maintain balance in the whole system as well as in their locales. I think of cognitive dissonance in this visual way...adding to a growing driftwood mobile and keeping local balance but unwittingly undoing the greater balance.

So Copernicus' ideas took 277 years to be accepted but he lived to see his ideas being "moderately accepted"? So you mean just the consensus still remained against him?
@TravisGilbert
@TravisGilbert 2 года назад
About a year later I realize this was a bit confusing haha. I mainly mean he didn't get burned at the stake like other people with similar ideas

Do you ever plan to monetize your channel? If so, how close are you to the 4 thousand watch hours?

@@TravisGilbert I think you are doing your best to find that thing. Just keep making awesome videos about different and unique topics and eventually you will make a popular video.

Can you talk about people getting irrationaly offended when you talk badly of something they love and have made part of their identity ? I only watched this video and dont know the style of the channel

It's because it triggers the fight or flight response because it's treated the same way as a physical attack in the brain. It's not really irrational at all, what they say might be irrational but the response is natural, if I try to cut of your finger I wouldn't say you where being irrational for fighting back. Would be a good topic for this channel though.
