In this video, “How your medical school influences a patient’s perception of you as a doctor,” I get into the somewhat taboo topic of medical school rankings. I will examine the role your medical school rankings will play in your overall treatment as a physician and what you can do to combat perceived biases. You can ask and answer the question ‘does a good medical school make a good doctor’?This video is also based on an NY Times opinion article entitled : “Rethinking the way we rank medical schools” by Pauline W. Chen, M.D.

I’ll be honest, I don’t care where a doctor goes to medical school. To me the location of where they completed their residency means more. Also, no matter where you went to school, you still had to pass boards and they’re not easy. So, with that said it doesn’t matter where you went to school. Further, medical school, is two years of the sciences and your last two are mainly intro to clinicals and board prepping. You really become a doctor during residency. These are just my opinions. Thanks for watching! Agreed..however you’d be surprised how often that question acts as an ice-breaker in conversation..especially on rotations during residency where, as you precisely said, is where you actually learn how to be a doctor!

It’s the fact that people think where you go to medical school determines what type of care you’ll give as a doctor. There’s doctors who go to the top best schools and still come out to be a horrible doctor. That’s crazy to me.

This is very good topic, because within my post bacc program theres a lack of support for people such as myself that want to attend a HBCU for medical school. Do you mind doing a video that covers all of the HBCU Medical Schools? I want to show some of my colleagues that HBCU Medical Schools are just as competitive and prestigious as other medical schools. ☺️

I'm very proud of my residency and how it has helped me become a physician. Patients seem to not understand the importance of residency, the difficulty of getting into residency, or the intensity of residency training and that's a shame because they're the reason I work so hard. At the same time I can understand that it's very difficult to quickly put your life into someone's hands and I would want some evidence of quality. I think it's important that patients understand that medical school and residency curricula are standardized such that they promote development of good physicians in all graduates, and that they're in good hands regardless of medical school or residency attended. Regardless, prestige will always play a role in all things in society, and in our own perceptions.

Great video. I'm a psychology major and I just decided that I want to go to medical school. Do you think that a one year postbac is enough time to learn the required material to enter medical school for someone who has no science background? Also do medical school loans cover expenses such as rent and food. Thank you. You're super inspirational.

Thanks for watching! Did you do any Pre-requisite science courses prior to entering the post back program? If not you’ll probably need about 2yrs. Your loans will be taken out at your discretion to cover the costs of tuition, room and board.

That’s the only TEST required for medical school but you also have college level courses that are required in order to apply to medical school and to be prepared enough for the MCAT as it’s not an easy exam. I know this comment is 2 years old but since nobody answered I figured I would in case you didn’t find out on your own. You need 2 semesters of Biology chemistry and physics and 2 semesters of organic chem minimum. Most people major in bio for their undergraduate degree (bachelor’s) to fulfill these requirements

A medical doctor could have gotten their medical degree from CVS, I really could care less. It’s the results I’m interested in. They do the same for universities, it’s all classism in my opinion. I think there are schools that are better than other schools but the top schools graduate dummies the same as some of the lower rank schools graduate geniuses. It all depends. Great video.

The stage that you are in is very early, but there are things you can do. I suggest taking ap science classes like chemistry and biology because they will prepare you and introduce you biology and chemistry that you will take in college. Most importantly, STUDY SMART. You need to establish a study rputine that works for you because you will need it in college and med school. Also, take breaks. Go for a walk and do things that you enjoy.

@@assassinruler1483 So this is my last semester as a dual credit student, after I graduate I’ll only need two more years of undergrad until medical school. What surprises me is how your only 15 and have 3 years till med school. Idk what you did, but you did something right 😂. I wish I could’ve been 3 years away as a 15 year old.

@@assassinruler1483 Here in Texas, dual credit only gets you as far as an associates. You have to earn your bachelors at an actual university, that’s why I still have two years left. Not all credit earned in high school is accepted by universities. Many universities want you to take their classes only, like Harvard, and some universities only take the credit that isn’t in line with your major. Purdue only accepted 28 of my credits and none of them were science based. I chose to stay here in Texas because the credit earned in Texas, is fully accepted by universities in Texas.
