It was too long to be entertaining.. if it was cut 30 mins from near the end.. it would’ve been perfect. Young me loved it.. until it started to draaaaaaaaggg..
@@captainjakemerica4579: I consider that to be a good thing. We need more movies with differing tones throughout. I'd much rather that than the single tone we get from most modern marvel movies. Or in the case of some (Cpt Marvel for example) , no tone at all..
When I hear hate for this film, it always baffles me. It's a great laugh. And as an aged teen when it came out, the presence of Lea Thompson may also have had a hand in my fond memories for this film.
Lea Thompson is the peck of hotness in this movie. At one part when you see her getting dragged by Dr. Jennings as a monster and she kicking her feet you can see extra if you know what I mean. I'm so surprise that the film makers didn't take that out or edit so you wont see her vagina. No joke you can see it better on blue ray HDdvd or 4Kdvd. For anyone who had a crash on Lea Thomson as a teen. Your welcome lol. More of a reason to go back ;)
This movie is glorious A1 grade schlock. Absolutely hilarious film and even more so when you realize "competent" people were actually involved in making this.
What's always fascinated me is that they originally had a very different script; then "Ghostbusters" became a massive hit. And the studio suddenly began to give notes. Note the similarities; a creature from another dimension possesses a character; scientist characters...
I've never understood what the problem is with Howard the duck , it's a fantastic film with so much imaginative fun stuff going on. Solid SFX great cast script and good time all round. I've always enjoyed it and went out of my way to track down a ex rental copy in the 90s due to it just disappearing in the uk I still remember the day I saw it as a kid. It was a double rental along with Golden child good times
I was born in 1982, and it’s difficult to quantify how many times I watched and rewatched this film growing up. I’ve always been kind of amazed how much it’s universally hated, as I found it so endlessly entertaining. However I recognize that I was watching it through a different set of eyes. Would really like to rewatch at some point, as I still think it will hold nostalgia and entertainment value for me.
86 baby here. This movie is part of my soul. It showed me what an ultralight is. To this day, when I take my plane out of the hangar, I double check my fuel lines!!!
I own an original copy of the first time Howard The Duck was introduced in Spider-Man. Naturally, when the movie came out I HAD to see it. I was a huge fan of it then. I'm still a huge fan of it today! I was so glad when they brought the character back, at least in cameos into the GOTG films. But THIS film is so over the top fantastic. When you asked who this movie was intended for? ME!
Here in the UK it was released as Howard, A New Breed of Hero and the posters to promote it only had a small silhouette of Howard from the back. You would never have known it was about a duck!
I applaud you, JoBlo, for an honest take on Howard the Duck. I'm sure it would have been easy to blast all the goofiness, story, and weird sexual interplay between Beverly and Howard. There's some type of honesty and innocence to a lot of the mid-80s movies that simply cannot be discounted, and certainly not recreated today.
Howard the Duck remains one of my all-time favorite movies. I watched this endlessly as a kid growing up in the 80s, and it (along with SpaceCamp 😂) solidified my crush on Lea Thompson. Everything about this film is fantastic - the humor, the music, the diner scene! 🤣🤣🤣 I friggin’ love it!
Marvel might want people to forget about it BUT Howard the Duck (‘86) exists in the MCU all thanks to the multiverse. I would love for them to reference this and other gems like the ‘90 Cap America flick with Cap just stealing peoples cars and of course Fantastic 4 ‘94. I guess the best way to do this is a show about Deadpool joining the TVA.
I'm a big fan of this movie. I have some great memories watching this as a kid and now I also have great memories watching it with my daughter. She loved it too of course. Great fun movie with some great dark and cheesy comedy
I have always loved this film. It actually holds up pretty well, especially the design of the Dark Overlord. I still own the VHS, but re-purchased on DVD because it started having issues. Regardless, it is one of those silly things I still treasure.
Personally, l always have and always will love this film, despite or because of its faults. Therefore, it is great to see it get some more love from JoBlo. And no film starring the very lovely Lea Thompson at her very peak should ever be considered bad. Sometimes a fun, funny and undemanding film is just what is needed. This is that film. PS: the IMDB rating of just 4.7 for this film is nothing less than SCANDALOUS. I have seen far far worse than HTD!
This is one of my favorite 80s movies. Along with the other 80s Marvel film, The Punisher with Dolph Lundgren. I grew up in that decade and there was fun on the big screen. I got to see this in theaters when it came out.
I really don't know what everyone's problem with this movie is. I loved it as a child and i love it today. Okay it's a guilty pleasure, but still... i love it! AND: Can we talk about John Barry's amazing score?!?
We have an great fondness for this movie as we got married in Manhattan, splurged on a few days at the Waldorf Astoria, and went to see Howard the Duck! It was somehow the perfect movie…just ducky! 🤪
I enjoyed this movie when I was younger and it ran non-stop on cable TV. Looking at it again later, it was a bit tougher to get behind. My main problem with it feels like it can't decide if it wants to be an edgy sci-fi comedy or a kids film about a duck - one minute giving us dark, disturbing, or sexual moments, and the next giving us 1970s Scooby Doo-clone-grade dad joke dialogue and comedy.
I gotta admit; I still think there are some things that just don't work in this movie, but I'm glad somebody else FINALLY noticed how funny this one actually is! I totally agree that this one is truly underrated! XD =)
To those of us who were really looking forward to its release back in the day, it was a major disappointment. I attended an advance exhibitors' screening, and we ended up not booking it at our theatre after seeing it. Good thing, too, because it bombed.
Yeah, I too am not feeling the nostalgia here. This was one of the movies I got my brother to watch with me - on VCR, because it was BAD. We laughed at how bad it was.
Thanks for showing Howard some love. This movie unfairly gets crapped on but it's actually really good and entertaining. I'm proud to say i own it and i love it!
I adore this film. Grew up watching it. Revisited as an adult knowing how "bad" and hated it was.....and I still thoroughly enjoy it. It's just dumb fun. And hey, Lea Thompson looks banging and she has a great voice.
1985: Lea Thompson is unwittingly hot for her own son. 1986: Lea Thompson is hot for an anthropomorphic duck. Only the #2 movie babe of the 80's (after Princess Leia) could pull this off. What an actress!
I'm going to give this movie (and others in the bad movie category like Showgirls, Waterworld and Battlefield Earth) some praise. Now on a level they're still bad movies and there's a reason why they flopped on screen. This one in particular was pretty bizarre what with it featuring anthropomorphic ducks showing boobs and Howard and a scantily clad Lea Thompson almost doing what i can describe as borderline bestiality. And yet just the fact that it took risks makes me have respect for. Particularly if you compare it to modern movies where they either extend franchises thin (Expendables), burned out complete genres like the comic hero genre, or just do remakes of classic movies with political messages thrown in. In other words, modern movies won't take a leap into the unknown and would stick to the same tired formulas. And it's still a bad movie but its got a certain charm and wackiness to it that actually makes it likeable. That being said, i really hope they never remake it. I fear they're going to have actual furries in it
I always liked waterworld I'm not saying it's a great movie but I never understood why it got panned as hard as it did and the postman is a pretty cool post apocalyptic movie that's worth a watch
I love the film too. But if you really enjoy the film, I do recommend checking out the comics. Howard the Duck comics are really great. After I became a huge fan of the Howard the Duck film(I still am of course), I'm curious what the comics offer, and I really enjoy them as well. If you want to see more adventures of Howard and Beverly after enjoying this film, the comics are the way to go.
I saw this film when i was 8 years old or so. Before i was aware of Marvel or DC. I knew Spider-man, Superman, Batman etc etc. But it was the same for me as Heman or Mighty Mouse or Super Ted. Just fun cartoons. I saw Howard the Duck and did not know that it was a commic book character. I just liked the film and i stil do.
I've always had a soft spot for Howard the Duck, and I highly recommend checking out Chip Zdarsky"s brief run on the character that goes so far as to make this movie canon! 🦆
I always liked this movie . I never could understand the hate . It also has the killer electric keyboard sounds of the one and only Thomas Dolby . ( yes I’m a fan ) Dolby’s first single “Europa and the pirate twins “ so much better than his big hit “ she blinded me with science” .
