I've always loved his music but I didn't know until a few years ago about what a fine upstanding gentleman he was. He protected his band and his family from outside influences. His pleasures were simple and his heart was gigantic. He was a fearsome giant on the outside and all heart and character on the inside. I wish I had learned more about him sooner.
He learned to read and write when he was in his late 20s because he wanted to be able to read his contracts. And as you said he took care of his musicians. When he was starting to make money, he wanted to take care of his mother, financially, but she refused his money because it was made playing "the devil's music". He was by all accounts a decent man, unlike his great rival, Muddy Waters, who was a womanizer who tended to neglect his own family. I bought his record "More Real Folk Blues" when I was 13 or 14 and at first it scared me to death, because I had never heard music that intense.

This was Newport 66,i was there in the crowd on a hot summer day in July. Shit changed my life!'Stuff I got will bust your brains out baby' (Robert Johnson)
My wolf... my heart.. Muddy, Lil Walter, Jimmy Reed, Otis.. I could go on.. thanks to them they paved the way.. I'm so blessed my husband plays authentic rhythm n blues. I really want the kids today to appreciate these guys.. they should always be paid the respect they deserve...
So original one ear,Yep that's howling wolf this beat is awesome no other like it.Wolf definitely left his mark on all of us who love and appreciate the blues.
When I heard this record when I was youngster about 1960? The hair on the back of my neck stood up, it the first blues record I had heard. I’ve been a lifelong fan of the blues since.
*LEGENDɅRY HOWLIN' W🐺LF.* Blues legends are too young to die because they are *ETERNɅL!* Wonderful scenes from a time where one part of the country preached and practiced hatred and racism, while others were united against it and music was a bond between them, no matter what race they belonged to. All you commenters who laughed that this crowd couldn't clap and dance in time are talking nonsense. As twezzo99 pointed out, this is what documentary film-makers call a "needle drop." Murray Lerner, who shot this film at the 1966 Newport Folk Festival, lost the sound track of Wolf's live performance decades ago. So when they released the film of this show 30 years later in the documentary "Festival," someone synced this footage to the studio version of "Howlin' for My Darling," and then added canned clapping -- oddly out of sync with the song -- and a crowd roar at the end that's obviously fake. It's a total sonic mess. The crowd in this clip is out of sync with the rhythm of the song simply because they were clapping and dancing to something you don't hear -- Wolf and band playing live 42 years ago -- while you're listening to the studio version of the song. And the out-of-sync clapping is not from this crowd but from the badly synced clap-track added decades later. It's clap-track claptrap!
@@chenzenzo If you just wanna hear the fucking song, there's a much better version of it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0dkdtmQ9cxQ.html
She hot like red pepper sweet like cherry wine lol 😆 😋 go head howlin wolf, I love this man music. I've had some good times and parties with junk joint and blues.
To me, Howlin' Wolf was the top blues guy, period. He had a voice compared to a "blowtorch on cement," took care of his band, had no vices, and was a compelling performer. I imagine you wouldn't want to cross him. His "Rocking Chair album" is a collection of his singles, and the one blues album you should own if you only own one.
Also.. I wish we could really hear the love audio from this day. That's NOT a live performance audio wise. Damn I would love to hear it. Maybe it was to gritty or shitty sounding to try and work with. Damn... still love my Wolf

I got turned on to EVIL back in '69. Interesting to see black and white together on this and some of the reaction . Today the PAUSE button has been lit,
Poor bajostead will he ever get this title right? love the clip thank you very much Wolfy is one of my heroes seeing him perform in this clip is inspirational thanks again :)
No, it is definitely the studio version. Hand clapping audio has been added, to make it look like it matches the audio, but the song played in this video is 100% the studio recording. Not live.
is that a guy from the future on his smart phone at 1:55 hhhmmm..LSD was still.legal n by lack.long hairs this looks maybe 64-5?...no cars to reference from..cool video history here.. wow. wonder if Capt beefheart was here learning more chops..
The audio of this video is a pre-recorded studio version. Was the Wolf miming at that gig to his record - or is it just silent video footage with the record dubbed over more recently ?
It is the album version. This is not a live performance. Common practice at the time. They didn't have the technology to record live performances very well. They all sound like shit. The band is playing live, but they're probably not even recording the audio. It's just an issue of technology.
