This is guide howto install NVIDIA proprietary Linux drivers (manually using .run files) and disable Nouveau driver on Debian 12 Bookworm. Linux Kernel 6.1+ is tested.
Currently working NVIDIA drivers are:
- 555.xx (555.58 NFB)
- 550.xx (550.90.07)
- 535.xx (535.183.01)
- 470.xx (470.256.02)
- 390.xx (390.157)
- 340.xx (340.108)
This guide works with NVIDIA GeForce 6/7/8/9/200/300/400/500/600/700/800/900/10/20/30/40 series cards.
This method allow you easily install / test / use different versions of NVIDIA drivers, you can test BETA drivers and switch back to stable.
I use here KDE, but also GNOME and other desktops works very smoothly with latest NVIDIA 555.xx / 550.xx / 535.xx / 525.xx / 470.xx drivers.

I have tested this guide with NVIDIA 470.xx, 535.xx, 550.xx, 555.xx drivers/cards on latest Debian 12 Bookworm. Here I use 545.29.06 NFB version of NVIDIA drivers installer, you can always select latest stable version, beta or some other version. An excellent tutorial! Installed the 535.XX driver first; tried it for a couple days and then installed the NVidia v545.29.06 driver. The latter has been rock solid. Hardware: X399 mobo, with Threadripper 2950X CPU & Asus ROG Strix RTX 4090 OC on an Optimus PC waterblock. Linux Debian 12.4 looking very solid. Cheers 💯 And🎅 Merry Christmas!

all worked, nice. one thing, it said i cannot install the 32 bit something after rebooting and running the NVIDIA***.run file. Could there be an issue for steam/ games? or i should not worry about it?
@inttf

Could you remember exact error message? Was it related to installation path? There may be a problem with games if the games try to use 32-bit libraries.

It was working correctly until this weekend, after an update... Restart would hang on CUPS service... Decided to re-install everything, now it gives an error while performing "Building kernel modules". Strange. Am I to guess an OS update broke things? Tried Trixie and Bookworm, same result. Latest stable and latest beta NVidia, same result.

@@inttf Well, it's been about 3 weeks since I installed the nvidia driver using your tutorial, and everything has been rock solid. In fact, I did a normal "apt upgrade" yesterday, which updated the kernel to 12.6, and (it appears) DKMS recompiled the NVIDIA drivers automatically. Thank you for the offer to "explain more", but I'll pass for now. It's nice to keep some things "magical". 🙂

I also have a problem with a black screen after installation, but when I connect a second monitor via HDMI, there is an image on it. I have a laptop and its monitor is powered by the processor's integrated graphics, and the second monitor runs through the HDMI port, which, in turn, runs from a discrete graphics card. All that remains is to figure out how to get both monitors to work. PS. There is no setting in my BIOS to switch graphics to discrete graphics card

If you don't have hardware multiplexer (mux), then you can't get this working. I mean if you can't control this from BIOS/UEFI, then your NVIDIA card is not connected to your laptop panel. So, nvidia now says not to use their .run files, but they still have it downloadable. It just tells you to use the debian method now once you download it and go to all the trouble of trying to run it. The debian documentation method installed the files, but I'm still getting Intel Mesa showing up as my graphics card. lspci shows the nvidia card exists and such, but I can't get it to run.

This notification is years old and just a recommendation. The reason is clear, for many, manual installation is just too difficult. This guide is not trying to be an official guide, but a way to install any NVIDIA driver. Any information what hardware you are running?

@@inttf Yeah for sure. I'm just leaving breadcrumbs for people who are still trying to find solutions to problems. The debian guide is *correct* for getting the driver in there (check nvidia-smi). it doesn't show up in "About This System" using their current setup though, and when people search they pull up results from all over the internets including your guide from before.
