I'm a bit confused by your questions, yes the caddy is what you need to plug into that port. You can use the whole caddy I just chose to not to. The internal 32gb emmc storage is soldered to the system board and is not "replaceable" you are just adding a different drive and can use that to boot vs the emmc storage. and no, you do not have to re buy windows. the license key is built into your system board, and after your first or second reboot, if you're connected to the internet the system with activate automatically. and lastly, no, you cannot upgrade the CPU, again it is soldered to the system board. and even if you had all the skills required to upgrade, any compatible cpu would be of similar class, or in other words, also slow. If you are really stepping up to that next level of system, if you save a few more bucks, I would just buy a used business class laptop, like this one: rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?ff3=4&pub=5575128025&toolid=10001&campid=5337706877&customid=&mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fitm%2FLenovo-Thinkpad-T450-Intel-Core-i5-5300U-2-3GHz-8GB-RAM-256GB-SSD-Win-10-Pro%2F324106703185 For $160 + shipping, you get a core i5, 256gig SSD, 8 gigs of ram and a 1600x900 screen. Or for a few bucks more this zbook 14 G2: rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?ff3=4&pub=5575128025&toolid=10001&campid=5337706877&customid=&mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fitm%2FHP-ZBook-14-G2-Workstation-Core-i5-5200U-2-2GHz-256GB-8GB-14-1600x900-Win-10%2F164120585527 I love the zbook line a lot.

Thanks for the help. I wasn't sure I was going to be able to get the back off until I watched your video. Turned the notebook with a 32gb EMMC into a full on laptop with 250gb SSD and 12gb of ram. Used AOMEI Partition Assistant to port the Windows 10 OS over to the SSD. Unplugged the EMMC and it booted from the SSD.

Thanks for the video. I successfully upgraded my HP 14-an013nr. I ordered an Aireye ssd and installed it with what appears to be the same caddy you bought but, I actually used the caddy because it lined up perfectly to plug in and when I installed the backing or bottom, it seemed to actually lock in the caddy so it can't move. The software work was tricky as I first used MiniTool/Partician Wizard with limited success then after reformatting the drive, I retried with Macrium. That worked really well. For now, i disabled the drive in Computer Manager / Device Management because I could not find that option in the BIOS. Maybe later I'll activate the drive and use it but for now, it will remain unused and ready the operating system in case of emergency. Because of your video and another's, I was able to do this upgrade. THANK YOU!!!

I installed one of those adapters in a laptop once. You need the bracket from the back of the optical drive or another one. Pay attention to how it is on there for less frustration. Also that screw that holds it on is tiny so watch that you don't lose it. If it is like the one I had on mine that screw is really short so threading it in may seem a little tricky. You can use the front bezel from the optical drive if you don't want a gap there. It is ugly and it may seem out of place.

Installed successfully! And I migrated the OS to SSD no problem. Well, one problem, I didn't increase the primary partition size on my first attempt so it was 28g used/0avail and 200g+ unallocated. Question about the caddy. when I removed the adapter from the optical dock, there is a loose cord that is connected to the adapter. Is it safe to remove this? I just taped it to the SSD for now.

...well, I couldn't get the cloning to work so I opted for a clean install on the new SSD, removed all the partitions off the 32GB internal during the Windows 10 setup and now in Windows I don't even see the 32GB (which is how I want it). Key here is that you need Windows 10 media and I'd STRONGLY recommend using the recovery tools on the built-in OS so that you have a way to get everything back to factory should you want to do that. For me, I used the reflect software to create the cloned partitions but my problem was that I could never get the BIOS to accept my new SSD as the primary boot drive. The other thing is with the reflect free cloning tool - it doesn't give you the option to extend the 29GB C;\ partition out to use whatever free space is left on your drive so you need another tool after you get windows moved to the new disk to do that. So, I have access to a windows 10 Home ISO so I created a bootable USB key out of that and then just did a new install and went from there. It's the 1607 build (latest at this time) so the good news was after manually running a windows update all the video/audio drivers were installed and everything works like a champ. I did a video as well - you can find it here. Thanks AIC for getting me started...good video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kdeSMD1jwkM.html

Amazon will not send the laptop to Australia and buying it from the local HP web site is more expensive than currency conversion + taxes so ... it's annoying. The laptop looks good for a low-powered pc. It would pair well with a good desktop to provide portability while the desktop does the serious work.

These videos are seriously helpful and informative for this model of computer. Many people reference and link to your videos for help. Thank you for putting the time in to figure out these solutions and sharing. By the way, is the CPU removable/soldered? I know this question was asked in a different way, but I can't find a straight answer anywhere. I have the opportunity to get this laptop plus a 128GB SSD/1TB HDD and a 8GB stick for about ~$240. I was looking at an upgraded version of this laptop for a couple weeks for my parents. I had been planning to do the 8GB RAM thing with 1 stick of 4GB but Windows 10 is bad about RAM usage. Is the 16 GB build recommended over 8GBs? At some point the AMD processor will be the bottleneck. I'm appreciating the SSD and the carrier card links. That looks like a great deal for local storage. I'm going with a NAS for bulk storage. But all of this will bump it into the 330 range. I'm wondering if that is worth it. With 8GBs of RAM it's only ~$270 range.

Can you select any of the sizes? 120G /240G/ 480G/ 960G for the SSD? are they all the same with the connectors I wanted to get the 240 for my notebook. I feel It's very reasonable price. I've already Installed a stick of ram.I already have windows 10.. just can't update now. @AICvideo

single channel mode vs dual (or quad channel) only means that if your CPU supports it, you will get slightly faster speeds in certain workloads if you have matching memory in the correct slots. and it has nothing to do with how much memory you can upgrade the system with. This system has two slots, you can load it up with 32 gigs of ram, but if you want just 8 gigs you will get the same performance if you have 2 dimms of 4gigs or 1 dimm of 8 gigs ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--D8fhsXqq4o.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-a0jb0hCMXfo.html

Single vs dual channel doesn’t make as much difference for 99.9% of what most people do, but having more ram will. So upgrade. Also all modern cpus support dual channel memory.

I wonder if anyone else has run into this problem. I kept the 32gig eMMC installed and added a 128gb ssd. The machine doesn’t boot properly anymore. Prior to the update 1709 attempts, the boot screen would show volume 3 and volume 6. I would simply select volume 6 (ssd) and it would boot fine. Now the auto update runs (doesn’t successfully install 1709) and when it boots, I see a blue recovery screen with options. Yes, I could remove the eMMC card and boot from the ssd but wonder if this can be solved with bcdedit. I tried bootfix to no avail. I can get past the recovery screen by hitting F1 and enter or esc and enter, and it boots into windows. Update: i just went into the bios and under boot options, only sees the 32gb drive, no ssd. But when I boot windows, the OS boots into ssd (C drive) and it sees the 32gb as the D drive. Boy something’s horked up. I might need to do a clean install.

Yes, but you still get a performance boost by going from 4 gigs to 8 gigs. At least I sure noticed a difference in performance. but its confirmed by cpuz that it is single channel regardless of the number of dimm slots used.

@johnnyappleseed5476 7 лет назад
Thanks for quick reply, so if I throw another 4gb of ram in there it doesn't recognize it as having 8gb but it's not just sitting there being unused? Another guy took out his 4gb completely and just put an 8gb in. Thanks for info
@AICvideo
@AICvideo 7 лет назад
Of course it recognizes it. dual channel vs single channel is the speed at which the memory runs. if you have two memory dimms installed that are exactly the same (same speed, size, etc) the memory can run a little faster. that's all dual channel does for you. this computer really isn't fast enough to take advantage of that anyways. I had 2x8 sticks (16gb total) and it recognized all of that memory, but it wasn't any faster with 16 vs 8 gigs, so I have just 8 gigs in it.

Thanks for all the coverage on this computer. Your videos were timely for me as I had spent many hours searching for a cheap laptop with a 1080p IPS screen when I stumbled across your first video on this one. After that, my mind was made up. I've got my new 14-an013nr in hand now and am preparing to install an SSD. Not having done this before, I googled to see exactly how others clone or copy the drive image in other computers and got confused about some of the details. Can you tell us, in somewhat step by step fashion, how you used Macrium Reflect to get it done for this specific computer? Thank you.

I went ahead and tried it myself. Ran into a couple of problems. The first problem proved to be minor, the second not so much. First, I had to learn how to initialize the new SSD, using DISK MANAGER and once I did, that part went fine. Then I cloned the C: drive to the new SSD with Macrium Reflect. There were four partitions on the old eMMC drive, the third one is the big user partition while the fourth one is a recovery partition I think. Don't know what the first two were, but being small, I decided to leave them intact. I found that in Macrium Reflect, while preparing to clone, I had to move each partition over one by one to the destination drive section. Doing them all at once did not allow me to resize the third partition. When the third one was moved, I resized it from 29GB to just large enough to leave room for the last partition or about 222.34GB and named it E:. Then I moved over the last partition as it was, leaving a few MB of unused disk space on the new drive. Then I went ahead with the cloning, which appeared to complete correctly. Then I followed you instruction to change the boot order in the Bios. That appeared to work correctly and I booted successfully from the new drive. At this point everything seemed to be working ok. Here's where the second problem happened. I timed how fast the desktop would come up from power on and it was around 34 seconds (used to be about 90 seconds). Wondering how some others who have upgraded to ssd on other machines can boot in 10 seconds, I thought that perhaps I can figure out how to skip the Windows welcome screen, so I googled for advice and found that I could choose to do this using the command "netpolwiz" to get to User Accounts. In User Accounts, I de-selected "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" and saved that. Then I re-booted the machine and a big problem occurred. I got the HP logo with the dreaded "automatic repair" and then a repair screen on which nothing helped. I kept getting stopped at automatic repair and it was unable to repair the problem. Having read some other commentary a few days ago about it being dangerous to reformat the eMMC once you have the SSD going (on a similar type of pc), I suspected that perhaps the eMMC is still involved with the boot process and the fact that I changed something only on my E: drive caused problems somehow. So, I fixed the problem by changing my boot order back to the C: drive (eMMC), and then the system booted ok. Then I made the user account change and rebooted without problems. Then I repeated the cloning process as before and now everything is fine. I plan to leave the C: drive contents alone as this seems to be a useful "lifeboat" in case of trouble. So, my question is...what happened? How is the C: drive (eMMC) still involved in booting even after I have changed the boot drive to E:? A bit of research brought to light the idea that this is likely a WIMBOOT issue. Could it be that during booting, the image files are still recovered from the old drive (those other partitions) rather than the new drive. Makes me wonder how do I get the new drive to hold everything, and re-assign the old drive to be something else? I guess it would be possible to clean this all up by doing a fresh Win10 install from disks using a USB optical drive, no?
@dmolter08
@dmolter08 7 лет назад
I don't have an answer to your question regarding why the eMMC drive is still involved in booting after switching to the SSD, but was wondering if you were able to successfully change the boot order over to the SSD without issue after your second cloning process? I'm asking because I followed pretty much the same process as you, except after cloning (using Macrium Reflect) the eMMC to the SSD and changing the boot order to the SSD, I went to restart the machine immediately to ensure there were no issues, and sure enough I received the HP "automatic repair" error. That being said, I'm about to embark on my second clone and wanted to know if you could kindly share your most recent results.

To access and work on the prop software, I need the USB security dongle to be connected via external USB ports at all times. The worry is that I might misplace the dongle. However if I am able to connect the dongle via available/unused headers internally, then that will solve my problem. I read somewhere that generally all motherboards come with spare USB Headers, where you can connect USB drives using cables/adapters. How much the battery lasts if is given a very "light" use? (say, no youtube videos, no bluetooth, no wifi, etc.)
@AICvideo
@AICvideo 7 лет назад
I'm sure you can stretch it to 8 hours, I was able to average between 3 and 6 hours depending on what I was doing. I never turned off wifi or bluetooth. (they usually don't do much to save battery). but battery saver mode really makes a big difference, and is very effective.

couple questions...I installed a new SSD (doesn't see it in the BIOS initially until I use a disk cloning app) but when I re-enter the BIOS and try to select the new drive as the boot device clicking 'enter' does nothing - as in - doesn't let me select that device. I'm also unable to use a USB key to just do a clean install - I move the USB to the top of the boot order and it just skips it and moves to booting to the internal 32GB. Anyone have any more details on how the got past that step?

after you installed the drive, did you initialize it in storage management in windows? I don't think the bios will recognize it as a boot drive until windows is actually installed on it. as far as booting from the USB, you should be able to from windows go into settings and reset the computer and choose advanced boot options and boot from USB.

yes - used the reflect software to clone all the partitions to the new drive then rebooted and tried switching to the new SSD. It showed up in the list but wouldn't 'select' when I'd hit return. I guess I'm just going to do a fresh install to the SSD and just go from there.

Thanks for the video. I have two sticks of 4gb ram in mine running in single channel mode. What benefits would I see using a single 8gb stick instead?

I installed it a 256GB sad and the computer is not even registering it. Any tip on what I might be doing wrong would be appreciated. Same brand as the one you installed on the video just bigger memory, thanks in advance.

The SSD is SATA III but the adapter is type 2. Will that cause issue with speed?

Can you upgrade hp x360 stream 11 emmc model. You have to solder 12 pin female clip on header on motherboard to attach ssd ribbon clip.

I know, I bought some and promptly lost them. And I have not had a stream x360 in for review.

No, and even if you could, for the cost, buy a more expensive laptop with a more powerful processor.

looking at them, you cannot get a 1080 screen on any model of that laptop at any price. so if screen resolution is important to you, then this laptop is better by far. If by processing power, its far better than the base level intel one, the amd e2 is better than the Celeron by a LOT. but its not as powerful as the core i3. and its more powerful than any of the AMD cpu's offered in the Dell systems. Yes, you do have to spend an extra bucks to get a storage drive larger than 32 gigs, BUT that is a fair trade off for the awesome screen. so if it was my money I would buy this laptop, the adaptor, and an ssd... which is exactly what I did.

Enter this line in your browser or in the Amazon search bar (that's where I bought it) and you should find the exact caddy: "HIGHROCK Hard Drive Caddy Tray 9.5mm Universal SATA 2nd HDD HD SSD Enclosure Hard Drive Caddy Case Tray, for 9.5mm Laptop CD / DVD-ROM Optical Bay Drive Slot (for SSD and HDD)"

SSD Not showing in BIOS boot. Hello, just bought the hp 14 An012nr . I bought a 120gb Kingston SSD and the caddy you suggested. I cloned the 32Gb emmc drive and the OS to the SSd and installed the SSD as shown in the video. However, when I go to the BIOS to change the boot order, the 120gb SSD doesn't show up, only the 32gb drive that already comes with the laptop. Even with legacy support on the SSD isn't read. Please help, thank you.

did you wipe the 32gig ssd? if so, it should just boot to the new one.

@@AICvideo ahh okay, so after wiping all the partitions in the old 32gb emmc drive, the new 120gb should now be visible?
@AICvideo
@AICvideo 4 года назад
it should just boot to it. I don't have this laptop (and haven't for years) so I don't remember exactly how it works, but I deleted the old partition because it saw it as the main boot device until I did that.

You would have to pay more than twice as much to get a computer with the same quality of screen. you give up some processor power, but I've been perfectly happy with mine. I've been using it for work almost exclusively, and I'm very happy with it. a bigger battery would be nice. but other than that it takes everything I throw at it on a daily basis.
