HP 14-an013nr case opened up, ssd install, memory upgrade 

I HAVE A HP 14AN010NR. I VIEWED YOUR VIDEO AND THANK YOU FOR THAT. I ORDERED THE GREEN THING YOU SUGGESTED. HOWEVER I GOT THE WRONG CADDY. DO YOU HAVE A CURRENT PART NUMBER? SOMEHOW THE CORRECT CADDY GOT CHANGED. I am a disabled veteran 82 years old. yes I occasionally need help.... thank you. I can do this.....lol

All caddy's are basically the same. You don't even have to take it apart, I just did for fun.

I'm a bit confused by your questions, yes the caddy is what you need to plug into that port. You can use the whole caddy I just chose to not to. The internal 32gb emmc storage is soldered to the system board and is not "replaceable" you are just adding a different drive and can use that to boot vs the emmc storage. and no, you do not have to re buy windows. the license key is built into your system board, and after your first or second reboot, if you're connected to the internet the system with activate automatically. and lastly, no, you cannot upgrade the CPU, again it is soldered to the system board. and even if you had all the skills required to upgrade, any compatible cpu would be of similar class, or in other words, also slow. Yes the job was easy after I took out all 14 screws :-) was overlooking one screw in the middle of the case you just can't take them apart that way:-( Little computer really flies ,Bios found my Crucial SSD made it C: and I was looking at my old home screen with all my data. I'm glad it worked for you. Unfortunately, my system did not recognize the 32GB original drive as I drive I could install Abuntu but, I am using it as a secondary story drive. Maybe later I will figure it out but for now, there are other things to do.

It looks like the caddy was just taken apart. The caddy they talked about in the video and linked to in the description are the same and the green adapter is just the inside of the caddy that he removed

Installed successfully! And I migrated the OS to SSD no problem. Well, one problem, I didn't increase the primary partition size on my first attempt so it was 28g used/0avail and 200g+ unallocated. Question about the caddy. when I removed the adapter from the optical dock, there is a loose cord that is connected to the adapter. Is it safe to remove this? I just taped it to the SSD for now.

I personally used the new drive as my OS drive and wiped the old drive and just used it for extra storage. I have a windows 10 install on a USB drive. I just use that.

Correct. You can use the caddy, I just didn't There wasn't a good way to secure it. Some caddies have a tab with a hole that will allow it to be screwed into place, but the one I bought didn't have that.

So he didn't say it explicitly, but he basically disassembled that adapter and just used the inside of it board, which is that green part.

the one I bought didn't come with a way to fasten it into place and I wasn't sure if it was going to stay. most have a tab with a hole for a screw.

How is it secured? I used velcro dots and it held really well.

I do one worse, I just keep it on my bed, while watching movies/tv shows, and it never feels like it ever gets very warm, much less hot, even when running iTunes movies at 1080p.

you don't need to do anything more with ram, but with storage, it depends. if you want to run your OS from the SSD, then you'll need to install the OS to the SSD (which I recommend doing). there are plenty of videos covering how to install windows.

Could I use a cloning program to move everything including programs and the OS from my original hard drive to the new SSD?

I had 16 gigs, and downgraded to 8. 8gig of memory is more than enough for this laptop. Its what I recommend, and I would not bother spending more than that on it.

yeah, you can use any SSD, same connector, and windows can recognize any size.

single channel mode vs dual (or quad channel) only means that if your CPU supports it, you will get slightly faster speeds in certain workloads if you have matching memory in the correct slots. and it has nothing to do with how much memory you can upgrade the system with. Single vs dual channel doesn’t make as much difference for 99.9% of what most people do, but having more ram will. So upgrade. Also all modern cpus support dual channel memory.

I sold it to move on to other projects/products so cannot speak for how much longer it would last, but it was very solid still and I expect it to stay that way.

I used velcro since I knew I wasn't going to leave that drive in there permanently, it would hold fast, but would be easily removed if I wanted to.

Yes, but you still get a performance boost by going from 4 gigs to 8 gigs. At least I sure noticed a difference in performance. but its confirmed by cpuz that it is single channel regardless of the number of dimm slots used.

Of course it recognizes it. dual channel vs single channel is the speed at which the memory runs. if you have two memory dimms installed that are exactly the same (same speed, size, etc) the memory can run a little faster. that's all dual channel does for you. this computer really isn't fast enough to take advantage of that anyways. I had 2x8 sticks (16gb total) and it recognized all of that memory, but it wasn't any faster with 16 vs 8 gigs, so I have just 8 gigs in it.

AICproductions I see, thanks for the info I was getting the impression that if I just put another four in there it would be wasted, didn't want to spend all the money on an 8 GB when I could just have two fours

Yeah, 8 gigs seems about right, and having 2 4's is the perfect way to do it on this system.

Sure I could probably throw something together. Its not a difficult program, maybe tonight or some time tomorrow.

I went ahead and tried it myself. Ran into a couple of problems. The first problem proved to be minor, the second not so much. First, I had to learn how to initialize the new SSD, using DISK MANAGER and once I did, that part went fine. Then I cloned the C: drive to the new SSD with Macrium Reflect. There were four partitions on the old eMMC drive, the third one is the big user partition while the fourth one is a recovery partition I think. Don't know what the first two were, but being small, I decided to leave them intact. I found that in Macrium Reflect, while preparing to clone, I had to move each partition over one by one to the destination drive section. Doing them all at once did not allow me to resize the third partition. When the third one was moved, I resized it from 29GB to just large enough to leave room for the last partition or about 222.34GB and named it E:. Then I moved over the last partition as it was, leaving a few MB of unused disk space on the new drive. Then I went ahead with the cloning, which appeared to complete correctly. Then I followed you instruction to change the boot order in the Bios. That appeared to work correctly and I booted successfully from the new drive. At this point everything seemed to be working ok. Here's where the second problem happened. I timed how fast the desktop would come up from power on and it was around 34 seconds (used to be about 90 seconds). Wondering how some others who have upgraded to ssd on other machines can boot in 10 seconds, I thought that perhaps I can figure out how to skip the Windows welcome screen, so I googled for advice and found that I could choose to do this using the command "netpolwiz" to get to User Accounts. In User Accounts, I de-selected "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" and saved that. Then I re-booted the machine and a big problem occurred. I got the HP logo with the dreaded "automatic repair" and then a repair screen on which nothing helped. I kept getting stopped at automatic repair and it was unable to repair the problem. Having read some other commentary a few days ago about it being dangerous to reformat the eMMC once you have the SSD going (on a similar type of pc), I suspected that perhaps the eMMC is still involved with the boot process and the fact that I changed something only on my E: drive caused problems somehow. So, I fixed the problem by changing my boot order back to the C: drive (eMMC), and then the system booted ok. Then I made the user account change and rebooted without problems. Then I repeated the cloning process as before and now everything is fine. I plan to leave the C: drive contents alone as this seems to be a useful "lifeboat" in case of trouble. So, my question is...what happened? How is the C: drive (eMMC) still involved in booting even after I have changed the boot drive to E:? A bit of research brought to light the idea that this is likely a WIMBOOT issue. Could it be that during booting, the image files are still recovered from the old drive (those other partitions) rather than the new drive. Makes me wonder how do I get the new drive to hold everything, and re-assign the old drive to be something else? I guess it would be possible to clean this all up by doing a fresh Win10 install from disks using a USB optical drive, no?

I don't have an answer to your question regarding why the eMMC drive is still involved in booting after switching to the SSD, but was wondering if you were able to successfully change the boot order over to the SSD without issue after your second cloning process? I'm asking because I followed pretty much the same process as you, except after cloning (using Macrium Reflect) the eMMC to the SSD and changing the boot order to the SSD, I went to restart the machine immediately to ensure there were no issues, and sure enough I received the HP "automatic repair" error. That being said, I'm about to embark on my second clone and wanted to know if you could kindly share your most recent results.

Anddddd after my second clone and switching the boot order back over to the SSD, I'm again getting the "automatic repair" error. I'm using the same Aireye 120GB SSD as recommended, as well as the same hard drive caddy. I also saw your Amazon review, which is very detailed and much appreciated - any suggestions?

its hard for me to give you any suggestions without seeing what you're doing. Record a video of your process? the copy, changing the boot order, and then the boot? upload it and I'll take a look.

AICproductions I upgraded the ram to 2x4gb and was planning to upgrade the storage to because I had a broken laptop just lying around covered in dust at the time I didn't realise that I needed a adapter. I didn't really watch your entire video but I watched up to when you were talking about the ssd and you velcroing it but what does it mean to have a single channel ram slot(s)? Is there a major performance impact vs dual channel or is it just a minor inconvenience

+Dultimate Gamer dual channel means some systems can run a bit faster if you have two identical ram sticks. This system is not capable of that. It's only like a 5-10% increase in some instances. This system isn't fast enough for that to make a difference. Linus tech tips covered it in a video recently.

+Boom Boomer what are you using to clone the drive? I have always used macrium reflect. It's free and has always worked great.

i tried macrium and acronis and a few more. something with the existing drive is 512 byte and SSD's are 4000 bytes making it incompatible, so it wont allow the cloning to continue. I wonder if I am the only one having this issue? I am also noticing a substantial amount of screen bleed on my particular laptop. I might have to send this one back for another? Hmmm... which SSD are you using? have you tried deleting its partition, and trying again? I've cloned to many an ssd without issue. I'll record a video shortly how to use macrium reflect.

+rajkumarpjain it does not. Why would you do that vs a 2.5"drive? I used an ssd because they are faster use less electricity and create heat than a regular drive, but you can pick up an sshd, which has some ssd storage and mechanical storage. They are a great compromise.

To access and work on the prop software, I need the USB security dongle to be connected via external USB ports at all times. The worry is that I might misplace the dongle. However if I am able to connect the dongle via available/unused headers internally, then that will solve my problem. I read somewhere that generally all motherboards come with spare USB Headers, where you can connect USB drives using cables/adapters. Are you sure there is not even a single USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 header?

If you use my amazon partnerlink, the 16gb for sure! J/K. I personally feel that 8 gigs is the right amount. Unless you do a lot of things that use a lot of memory, but not CPU, like excel spread sheets. I've had 16 gigs/12 gigs/ and 8 gigs in it, and I did not notice any difference between them in day to day use (mostly web browsing, remote console, and email work).

Single/dual channel refers to the speed of the throughput. If you add another 4 gig stick, you will have 8 gigs of memory. But that memory won’t be as fast as a system that supports dual channel memory. It’s a performance boost of

I'm sure you can stretch it to 8 hours, I was able to average between 3 and 6 hours depending on what I was doing. I never turned off wifi or bluetooth. (they usually don't do much to save battery). but battery saver mode really makes a big difference, and is very effective.

after you installed the drive, did you initialize it in storage management in windows? I don't think the bios will recognize it as a boot drive until windows is actually installed on it. as far as booting from the USB, you should be able to from windows go into settings and reset the computer and choose advanced boot options and boot from USB.

yes - used the reflect software to clone all the partitions to the new drive then rebooted and tried switching to the new SSD. It showed up in the list but wouldn't 'select' when I'd hit return. I guess I'm just going to do a fresh install to the SSD and just go from there.

looking at them, you cannot get a 1080 screen on any model of that laptop at any price. so if screen resolution is important to you, then this laptop is better by far. If by processing power, its far better than the base level intel one, the amd e2 is better than the Celeron by a LOT. but its not as powerful as the core i3. and its more powerful than any of the AMD cpu's offered in the Dell systems. Yes, you do have to spend an extra bucks to get a storage drive larger than 32 gigs, BUT that is a fair trade off for the awesome screen. so if it was my money I would buy this laptop, the adaptor, and an ssd... which is exactly what I did.

it should just boot to it. I don't have this laptop (and haven't for years) so I don't remember exactly how it works, but I deleted the old partition because it saw it as the main boot device until I did that.

You would have to pay more than twice as much to get a computer with the same quality of screen. you give up some processor power, but I've been perfectly happy with mine. I've been using it for work almost exclusively, and I'm very happy with it. a bigger battery would be nice. but other than that it takes everything I throw at it on a daily basis.
