Great laptop for not a lot of dough- the built-in 32GB HDD is a bust but this laptop will allow you to install a new SSD to give you more storage. Might as well upgrade the RAM from 4-8GB as well while you are in there.
First things first - make sure you read the documentation and follow the process to create recovery media that you can use to compeltely reinstall the laptop back to factory settings should you need to do that. If you follow what I show you in the video and you don't have this recovery media you will not be able to get the laptop back to the factory OS. HP includes a 'recovery partition' on the built in 32GB drive that contains the Windows 10 installer files, etc... and you need to create media (like a bootable USB key) to recover should you want to do that. Page 68 of the manual tells you how to do that here: h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/...
So, here are the components I purchased for this build:
Laptop ($199 Amazon): www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01...
Crucial 16GB RAM set ($80 for 2 DIMM"s - 1 for each computer I bought - if you only have 1 laptop you only need 1 DIMM...don't buy 2): www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...
Kingston 120GB SSD ($35 on Amazon - you can pick your size - I only needed 120GB but I've seen others do builds with 240GB drives. I don't know the maximum size that this BIOS will see - it might be in the manual link above) www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...
Drive Caddy Tray ($8 Amazon): www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01...
Heres the software I use to create a bootable USB key from the Windows 10 ISO image file: wudt.codeplex.com/

Please take a bow. My girl got one on sale. It kept running out of space so I had her bring it over. 30GB. Really? Being a long time IT guy I hate doing this stuff in my off time. Being a server guy, I doubly dislike messing with laptops. This was an enormous help.

Thank you very much for this video, it made my job a lot easier. I did some mods though that might help. The tray supplied by Amazon fits perfectly in the computer case. I found no need to remove the adapter and tape in the drive. Made the installation much cleaner, and is a solid mount that I don't have to worry about the drive coming lose. Also, by initializing the drive as letter D: and reassigning the libraries to D:, I was able to leave the operating system on C: and now as long as the customer stores their data in the proper libraries, C: should not run out of room. Thanks again, gave me some great ideas for future projects.

Just in case anybody's still trying to fix these things -- my wife has had one of these for a couple of years and got to the point where doing Windows updates was impossible. I just finished installing a 500G Samsung SSD, and everything seems to be working great. Here's what I did. I didn't mess with the bios at all. I put the new SSD in an external case I had (although I assume it would have worked just as well starting out by mounting it internally using the connector from the CD caddy). I used Clonezilla (booted from a USB thumb drive) to do a full disc clone from the 32G internal SSD to the new 500G SSD. Then I shut down the machine, installed the SSD internally, and unplugged the cable for the old 32G internal drive. At that point, it booted happily from the large SSD, but because of the disk-to-disk cloning, the main partition was still only 27G on the new drive (leaving tons of unallocated space). So lastly, I used DISKPART to delete the recovery partition on the new SSD, which then enabled me to expand the C drive (using the Windows disk manager) to use the rest of the space on the SSD. Right now, it's grinding through all of the windows updates it couldn't do with the small SSD.

First off, thanks so much for this very informative video and links Ken! One thing to note, the HP docs linked above seem to be a little out of date as on page 66 where they talk about creating the recovery media it talks about it seems to imply that it can only create DVDs, but when I went to do it just now it just told me to pop in a 8GB USB (mine size) and that it would format it and it's creating the recovery drive on it as I type...

thanks for the video. it saved me from a few good sized mistakes. for me, the whole HDD caddy fit perfect. it appears as if it will not however, looking at the bottom plate cover closely , one of the dividers is shorter... so it holds the caddy down. Just for GP, I did use a small strip of Velcro on the caddy. as far as the eMMC drive, after I got windows installed, i just took one end of the ribbon loose from the mother board. The restore USB kept loading to it instead of the new drive. disconnecting it resolved that problem. THANKS AGAIN!

Thanks for the video. I successfully upgraded my HP 14-an013nr. I ordered an Aireye ssd and installed it with a caddy (no velcro) because it lined up perfectly to plug in and when I installed the backing or bottom, it seemed to actually lock in the caddy so it can't move. The software work was tricky as I first used MiniTool/Partician Wizard with limited success then after reformatting the drive, I retried with Macrium. That worked really well (help from a tech blog). For now, I disable the drive in Computer Manager / Device Management because I could not find that option in the BIOS. Maybe later I'll activate the drive and use it but for now, it will remain unused and ready with the operating system in case of emergency. Because of your video and another's, I was able to do this upgrade. THANK YOU!!!

Lance, you should know that I did open the computer back up to make sure the drive was secure and to check my RAM as I forgot to when first opened. When I was in there a second time, I did use a velcro dot to help secure the drive and I kept it in the caddy as it fit pretty well when the cover was closed and secured.

Of course only "Windows Boot Manager" shows up, since you don't have another FAT32 device with an EFI folder. What you should've done is keep legacy support disabled, use Rufus to create a Windows UEFI USB, connect the USB drive before turning on the PC, then select the installer USB which would've run in native UEFI mode instead of BIOS emulation. Delete all partitions on the internal SSD and install Windows on the unallocated space on the new one to let it create the ESP on the new drive automatically. There are many reasons why native UEFI is better than BIOS emulation.

This laptop wont work well with virtual box? I would think with the SSD upgrade done in this VID and the 8gb of ram would upgrade this quite a lot..? I was thinking that running a low cpu/ram intensive virtual box system (wins7 32-bit w/ a few special programs) would work no problem. But maybe i was wrong? What should i look for in a laptop spec's to see how well it can be used as a virtual box compatible laptop, for once and a while use?

Thank you very much. It took me about 3-4 days for watching and understanding your videos, installing an SSD, and configuring drives. the 32 GB original drive didn't have enough space for Win upgrade, factory reset or creating an install USD drive. I used other laptop to create the USB install drive. This was my first ever upgrade. I think HP shouldn't have sold this with a 32 GB drive. After having poor two quality laptops (dead in 13 months, and this, I never buy an HP again.

yes, a 32GB drive in this thing is really dumb. The OS and the built-in installer files takes up 90% of the available space...there's no space to install anything else. Glad the video helped.

This is a great video! For at least Samsung SSDs, you can avoid the pain and stress of OS and data migration described here with a free tool from Samsung, called "Data Migration Tool" or something like that. I did not check, but I wouldn't be surprised if other SSD manufacturers have similar tools. The documentation that comes with the Samsung tool states that it doesn't work with other manufacturers' SSDs. So check with the manufacturer of your SSD before you spend money on a migration tool.

Great and extremely helpful video, i'm trying to figure out... if I have Linux on a USB 3.0 and run it from there, is it potentially faster than loading the Linux OS onto the built in 32GB SSD, or on an additional SSD drive that can be installed the way you did? Just trying to see which is more responsive as far as read/write speeds (faster bus speed?) and I cant seem to figure it out. Any help would be appreciated. I don't care about the current windows install on it, so I could overwrite it with a permanent install of Linux on the built in SSD, if that's the best way to go. Thanks for this great vid!

I didn't use it. It's in the manual on how to do it. It basically creates a bootable USB thumbdrive that allows you to restore the machine should you need to. All the OEM's include the OS install files on a recovery partition in lieu of shipping DVD's, etc... to save costs. So, it's up to you to make the disk. Again, I didn't do it so I don't have any instructions on it.

Great information. I just bought this model and and am about to add more storage and I have a couple questions.1) you are connecting the 2.5" SSD to the DVD SATA connector rather than the hard drive SATA connector (which is what the stock 32GB eMMC is connected to). This may be the reason the drive does not show up in the BIOS. Also I believe the DVD port uses the simpler IDE commands rather than the higher performance ahci mode. Do you think you are loosing any performance because of this? Why not install the SSD in place of the 32GB eMMC module as HP intended using part 815139 001?2) Why didn't you add a 4GB memory to the existing system to get 8GB?Thanks for your help.

Another alternative is to install Linux, get a 64 bit edition, (Lubuntu is what I use), through the USB drive, take the option to make the entire HD a Linux. Download VirtualBox. Take out your old Window XP O/S CD out. Get an external DVD-RW hooked up. Allocate to the new O/S about 256 MB or the 2 GB RAM. Lubuntu runs super on 1,750, and XP runs super on 256 MB. Make the Hard Drive folder around 1 TB for Windows XP. Put all your older Windows programs on the Windows XP VirtualBox. Update to latest SP3, Browser, ETC. What you will have is a super Internet with Lubuntu, and your old Microsoft versions. You are only going to use this for Internet surfing at McDonalds, but this is all for free, except for the time. I did this with a Toshiba, Celeron, 2 GB, 32 GB, clearance $105.00, installed XP...OK...I am a little weird, I also installed Windows 98, and Windows NT 4.0, but it works perfect.

Hello, I could use some help. I got all the way through until it was time to boot up with F9 and select my new drive. It showed up as the third option, like yours, but when I select it I keep getting the message “No bootable device-insert boot disk and press any key”. I figure I must have installed it correctly for it to show up as an option? Any advice? Thank you!

Hi, I have purchased an upgraded (SSD Drive) hp 14-an013nr, can I just add an additional 4GB memory stick or do I have to replace the stick it comes with with an 8GB stick. I am not clear on the channel modes so not sure if it relates to this. Thank you for the info and great video!

I can't remember...buried in the posts somewhere I put a link to the guide from HP (you can find it on their site by searching the model number) and it will tell you what the memory configurations can be. IIRC, you need to have two of the same sticks so that's why my recommendation was a 8GB kit.

There's is space for a HDD but I can't see where to connect the drive.

The short answer is 8GB. The easy answer is 8GB on one module - if you don't have time to open the case before you order. The expanded answer is that the memory controller is built into the CPU and Intel capped this Celeron at 8GB of total system RAM. The on chip memory controller has 2 memory access channels (I checked - good news) but some of these HP Stream 14's come with motherboards that only have one memory slot soldered on the board - which has a place for it but the 2nd plastic socket was left off). Because of dual channel memory access, a 4GB + 4GB (two 4GB modules for 8GB total bought as a matched pair) would be best. But if the board is one of the unlucky ones with just one plastic slot, a single 8GB module is the only way you can go.

I checked the manual (in the description above there's a link) and it looks like it does support 4GB x 2 configurations. It would not however support a 8GB + 4GB combo (total of 12GB) it's pretty specific on what it can handle. Yes, but at the bottom of page 1 you can see that there are checkboxes for Discrete graphics, UMA graphics, UMA, onboard mem eMMC, UMA onboard mem, HP 245 G5, and "onboard mem eMMC" (which I believe corresponds to the 14-an013nr) does *not* have a checkmark. So those bullets may not (probably don't) apply. That is some seriously shitty documentation HP's got there... Would be great to know what RAM configs have been confirmed to work by users. Looks like we have single 4GB and single 8GB. Anyone got 4GB + 4GB working?

As you mentioned, the caddy enclosure is useless. In this case can we not connect the SSD drive directly or do we necessary need the interface? If yes, what ssd interface should I purchase?
@MightyHawker
@MightyHawker 7 лет назад
You need an adapter to convert 13 pin SATA (which is what typical notebook CD rom drives use), to 22 pin SATA (which is what SSD drives have). This caddy is a cheap way to get such an adapter in the right form factor. You could probably find other 13 to 22 pin SATA converters (which is what I think you mean by "interface"), but most likely they will not fit inside this laptop.

When you did a clean install of windows 10 on this pc did you get rid of all the bloatware that hp preinstalled? @KenLince
@KenLince 5 лет назад
@@lt5550 PNP = plug and play. The problem with the 32GB embedded drive is that it includes all of the recovery partition files required to completely reinstall the system. That takes up gigs of space and is partially the reason why right out of the box you almost have a completely unusable system because there's no storage space left for any apps. If you completely reformat that you'll lose the recovery partition. But, you don't really have to worry about drivers and such - those are plug and play - i didn't have to install any additional video/audio, etc... to get everything working .

@Hue_Nery

Avoid HP at all cost. Even a Dell would be better. Way less work to upgrade. These laptops are practically disposable. If you want a cheaper laptop, look into the lower end Lenovo. If you are doing graphics, save your money for a decent i7 based laptop with a dedicated graphics card. You'll still want to upgrade to an SSD. Spend the money on a good machine rather than a cheap laptop like this. You will regret owning one of these. Too slow for what you're using it.

Hi Austin, Are you still managing the comments in this thread? I had followed your tutorial here on installing the hard drive SSD and it shows up in my “disk management” file but not sure how to move Windows from drive to drive. Can that be done internally? Right not it shows Disk 0 and Disk 1 but it’s unallocated.
@KenLince
@KenLince 2 года назад
There is no easy way to "move" the OS to the new drive. Best bet it to simply start over - get a USB key, grab a free app called "Rufus" to make a bootable USB from the Windows 10/11 ISO imagine you can download from MSFT's site. When you install - choose the newly installed SSD.

@KenLince
@KenLince 7 лет назад
As I mentioned in the video this appeared to be a weird BIOS in my experience. It wouldn't show the newly added drive but Windows would pick it up during the install. I have no idea how that's possible but it was. In my case, I just pulled the plug on the internal drive that came with the laptop so that it wouldn't even show up. After the Windows install it would be safe to reattach it since Windows already has the boot record set and you don't have to worry about the BIOS trying to default to that drive. Your experience may be different but I had two machines and had the same situation with both.
