The weird fan behaviour (sudden rap up and down) in Comfort mode is due to laptop fans being off by default; the fans compensate with high speed whenever the temps rise above 60c, which can happen often for a few sec in normal use (since fans are off). FIX: Enable "Fan Always On" in bios. This makes the Comfort mode truly comfortable for regular non-gaming work.
@@JarrodsTech bro please tell me which one should I take hp omen 15 with ryzen 5 4600h processor or i5 processor.? Every one is saying that ryzen is good in performance but it won't give a long lasting life like intel and ryzen is also producing lot heat and many problems?? Pls reply me I am student of. Cse and wat should I prefer
After a great deal of difficulty, I'd decided on the Ryzen 5-4600H version of this with the 1660 Ti, but it had to go out of stock precisely when I was about to pull the trigger. I'm praying like heck the laptop will be back in stock on September 2020. Thank you so much for the review, Jarrod! Here's to hoping you cross a million subscribers very quickly!
Aaditya Pratap Singh but I wish we got the same laptop as featured in the video at same price. In India we got fucked with the processor and the screen at 60hz
So I've had this HP omen for about 2 months. I have to say, I do like it a lot. I used to have an HP omen from 2018, which I bought without doing much research. It was sitting at like 98 degrees in any game and would bump into the 100's, but the new one for me lives in the high 80's unless I try max settings in Battlefield. HP omen's command center also hasn't changed much in that time, which is disappointing. They have more granular control of the fans in the higher end RTX models with the Intel processors. My guess is that it is a means of getting people to spend more money for Team blue. Honestly, I would have switched to MSI, but once I read about the thermals (and well... look at it, it's gorgeous lol) I decided to give them another shot. I also know a lot of people are concerned with the screen flex. I take mine to work with me everyday in my laptop carrying bag and haven't had any issues. Apparently HP left that gap so that if you hook up your computer to an external monitor you can still get airflow in through the top vents with the lid closed. So far I've had no issues, but I still have reservations about taking it on a plane in a carry-on or some situation where something might press down on it. The thermals give it longevity, but I still am cautious with the lid. All in all, I love the new Omen. I think when HP pairs them with better graphics cards we will see AMD shine. It's gaming performance is stellar for a mid-tier/under $1300 gaming laptop, but don't expect it to be a killer competitive gaming laptop unless you want to throw your money at the more expensive models with Intel chips and the RTX graphics and the 300 Hz screen... but at that point, buy something with slightly better build quality with your money.
@@sunnyboy8644 they should have tightened the hinges. It is a tad on the flimsy side, but so far I haven't had any greif over it. Because of the build quality if you have 1600/1700 dollars or more to spend on a laptop I would go with something else. But for the price/tech inside, you get a lot of gaming laptop.
@@erdinimanuel5475 when gaming you definitely still notice it come on and off with little diffence to being on performance mode. If on default and plugged in working on a word document it kinda torbos up sporadically, but when not plugged in and doing work you won't notice it. Comfort is by far the loudest setting and when doing casual tasks doesn't have an appreciable temp difference.
@Christaps rattle? Not that I noticed... but now that I think of it, the first week I had it I noticed that when you clicked the touch pad it would catch on some internal mechanism. It went away for me, whatever it was. But rattle, nah, mine never rattled
Cannot wait to see a comparison between Omen 15 and Legion 5 , when Lenovo finally decides to add a decent GPU to the 4800H config. :D Great review as usual!
@@TheKingCreeperChanne they usually simplify stuffs. Not bad, but for people that mind and fuzz over numbers, theirs videos are not as satisfy to watch. I like their comments about aesthetic though.
I can confirm, HP's "comfort" mode means comfort for CPU/GPU not for users comfort noise levels. :) Performance mode allows max fan speeds and higher temps on CPU before throttling.
Jarrod you did it man!, an impressive review by a tech expert. Like another fan of you I listen your voice while purchasing a laptop. However, this laptop is not available in my country so I got the A15... terrible screen but for a decent price... thank you for your reviews 🤟🏻
Judging from the Comfort setting’s icon, HP’s idea really seems to be comfort for your... hands? Lap? The icon suggests that its purpose is for better temperatures, imo
I ordered the Dell G5 SE, watched your video review and then watched a review on another channel of the Intel HP Omen 15 2020 and immediately returned the Dell when it arrived. Have yet to receive the refund but I got lucky to be held out on it because your exact model with a 1 TB ssd went on sale for 1,049 from 1,349 at bestbuy last week. I picked this laptop up and couldn't be happier with my decision the thing runs so smooth and cool. It's going to have a much longer lifespan with those temperatures then the Dell I almost was stuck with. Thanks for your rundown it's just solidifying my choice and makes me feel like it truly is a great budget option compared to the rest at it's price point
@@raahimhadi4905 reviewers call Eluktronics RP-15 to be the best for now. Even when Legion with 2060 is out, it will have capped GPU wattage and will be slightly overpriced.
Got the omen 15 with 4600h and 1660 ti. My model does not have the same issue in comfort mode. It is dead silent. Also I was playing Witcher 3 at 1080p in ultra preset, the cpu temp is 59C and gpu is at 67C, all in Comfort mode and frame rate locked at 60fps. Lovely review BTW. Keep it up.
Picked this up with a 1tb from Best Buy for $1049 with the student discount. Amazing machine for the money. Had to pick a 2060 with Intel for 1150 or AMD. I have no regrets going the AMD route.
Thank you I’ve seen tons of videos of laptops but you are the only one to do such a review that I can know exactly what to expect from laptop when buying it
I picked up an Omen 15 my self, with the 4800H 1650Ti and my friend did the same. During testing on both, I've seen the CPU hit 99 Celsius during Cinebench and the GPU hit 75 during Heaven. I don't know how folks are getting such good temps with both I've tested on are getting toasty at the CPU
I got the one with the 2060 and i7, and I love it. At first thermals were horrible for me because I would play on performance mode with auto fans, and it would get too hot. I started playing on balanced with max fans and it works like a charm. The fans do get loud, but a headset can easily block the noise for you. My games stay in the 60-80 degrees depending on what games I play, but nothing over that. Performance mode doesn’t do much for the performance, it only makes it hotter in my experience. Overall love the laptop and it’s performance, highly recommended it.
HP look's to be the best ryzen option Asus messed up the display Dell messed up the thermals and design MSI and Lenovo paired with entry level GPU's Acer might be a little late to the party
You're forgetting the Eluktronics RP15 which offers similar thermals and CPU performance, slightly less noise, but most importantly throws an RTX 2060 into the mix. That's the Ryzen option I'd go for. Check out Jarrod's review on this channel.
@@yousefalgendy5464 I have the HP omen (with 4600H + 1660ti). I feel flex is there but not deal breaker. It'll wobble in very fast wind but indoors, I do not feel any difference
I bought this exact model a month ago. I flipping love it. Thanks for the review Jarrod. Used all of your other vids to gage wether this was a good choice. You’re the laptop GOAT.
@@joinmeng did Lenovo just testing the water with 1650ti ? see if the Ryzen variant sold more then make a higher GPU ver later ? or they need time to make an optimized machine for AMD with higher GPU ?
@@bimasyahputra2639 @Bima Syahputra Well, Indonesia already have Omen with RTX. I believe it won't take long for Legion 5 with higher GPU avalaible in Indonesia after it's announced
@@bimasyahputra2639 there's Omen with 21.000.000 for the RTX, and Jarood seems to like it so i guess it's still worth to get Omen beside waiting for the Legion 5 Ryzen with higher sku.
After owning a HP omen 15 2019 for a year before selling it I can safely say I will never game on a laptop ever again. Almost burned my hands on the keyboard playing assassins creed odyssey, fans so loud you have to wear headphones to hear the game. Just an unpleasant experience. I had repasted the CPU and cleaned out the fans and heatsinks and it didn't make a difference. I used an elevated laptop stand so intake was maximised.
Look at the thermal, completely outplay most of the gaming laptop, if HP release rtx2060 model, will become the best gaming laptop of 2020. Btw, thank you so much Jarrod, the reason i majority watch your thermal review is because you include everything like cooling pad which everybody wanted to know. Thumbs Up!
I’ve got the i7 RTX 2060 model, and went into bios and turned “fans always on” to off. Fans stay off for quite a long time during normal use, then ramp up for a couple seconds to about 50% speed or so and then turn off again for another 15min or so. I much prefer this option to the always on. I feel with the Ryzen model you have it would be even longer with no fans on considering it’s a cooler CPU. I believe this laptop also has the sensors that measure the temp on the chassis as well which also factors in the speed of the fans. To create a more comfortable experience for the user
I am very happy with the "default" mode fan curve. It is not even that loud in game and it doesn't frequently ramp up in normal use either like some other laptops I have used.
Hey Jarrod! Very good video! I was actually looking forwards to this, since the HP falls in the same price range as the RP15/17. Could u please make a versus video featuring the Omen and the RP15/17, and give us your opinion of what u think is the best purchase!
8:02 My Acer Nitro 5 with its Nitrosense “Allows” you to set your custom fan speed but doesn’t listen to you at all it’s like the custom fan mode is not even there
For those who don’t know, there is an option on the BIOS that is called « Fan always on », you can disable it and the fans will not make any noise on idle. Pretty dumd that this isn’t disbaled by default.
I am so waiting for this laptop with these specs! For the moment we only have the 1650ti option. And it is also quite expensive. I could easily buy a Lenovo 5 with better specs at a lower price than the 1650ti hp omen.
So about the vent on the top, yes it does help improve airflow even if your laptop’s fans are mostly bottom intake. I can conform this because my laptop is mostly top intake, but by elevating the laptop, temps can drop by 4-5 Celsius. Pretty interesting.
I'm sold on this. I am now assured that this laptop will be one of the only few laptops that will serve me well for the next 5 years. Without much heat issues.
An RTX version of similar specs to this is listed in Indian HP website, with model no. "en0037AX". Heard, it'll be available after 5th September. Hopefully, we get to see the review of that too soon!! (finger crossed)
Update the Omen Command Center to the newest Version. You're using an old one. This (and the new profiles coming along with it) should fix the problem.
I have it, it thermal throttles a lot. When I play valorant or render something, it reaches 100 degrees all the time. But I'm not sure if my model has a defect.
I brought it (this version exactly). It's amazing when it comes to performance, I'm going back home soon to my mechanical keyboard and screen and I won't mind, but it does warm up so much that it's problematic. An important note for anyone who is going to work on this laptop as a portable powerhouse.
Yes it gets sooo hot, Idk how Jarrod got 70 degrees and all. For me, anything that is very demanding to the cpu it reaches 100 C easily. This happens to you as well?
Thank you for this video, please let us know about the max fan speed thing if you get to know it is a bug. I know you have a lot of videos to make but a direct comparison with the rp15/core 15 (the entire laptop experience) would help a lot of people since there are many threads comparing these two and the legion 5 as well. Personally I think your individual videos provide already enough info to compare them ourselves but summing it up in one video with your personal opinion would be great(like you did with last years laptops like the lenovo y540 and the acer helios).
Nice, thanks mate. HP omen it is, I was tempted by ASUS tuf gaming with the same specs, but yeah, it’s thermals just sucks, a shame though , oh well I don’t mind spending a bit more for longevity of a laptop
Great video as usual! Excellent thermals! And you know why? Because Ryzen!! I would really like to see the Legion 5 thermals with ryzen 4600H and 1650. I bet they're super good!!
Apparently there will be an RTX 2060 version of this aswell. Lenovo also said there's an RTX 2060 for their and systems too. Will you be doing a review for them aswell?
A great video as always. Thanks for that. I am waiting for eluktronics RP-17 review. Also lenovo will launch their lenovo legion 5 17" AMD version next month as well which has 80wh battery, I think, so looking forward to these reviews.
Hey jarrod can you finds out is the rtx 2060 amd model using 115w or not? Please. Because i'am so confused right now, between intel or amd should i get :(
I have this laptop and can confirm it's great. The only complaint towards HP is the lack of fan control. Oh and AMD really need to release software which lets us undervolt like Intel. That would really help.
Do you ever OC the GPU? I got about a 6 % fps increase in just about every game you tested yesterday at max and next one down settings. Matching the RP 15 with a 2060. Have SC for proof. Try a 195 core 525 memory. Trust stable probably could go higher
So.this is the RTX 2060 80W version? Have we found a way to determine what Manufacturers and Models have the 115W AND the Ryzen 4000 CPU? They perform better. BTW great thorough testing and review man
Yes, finally HP becoming good again. I feel this the true successor to the original Omen from 2015. Can you reduce the power limit/wattage from that Ryzen s/w?? Bringing it down to 25/30W should result in a quiet gaming experience.
Nice review as always, dude! Btw, is there's no update for omen gaming center? Seems other's review got newer version which is adding fan control, gpu switching control, and better battery consumption
What a machine, HP gambled with the dual slot M.2 instead of having a 2.5" slot and it's paying off considering bigger battery size and cheaper market for M.2s! Don't forget to like and subscribe to this channel people!
nice review, can put your hands on the rp17 and make a review of it? I think that a bigger chassis can make that laptop to run quieter. By the way thanks for try the ryzen controller, I haven't heard about it before
Really...ive got the Legion 5 Ryzen 4800H and i run it on my bare chest when lying down. No unidentifiable temperature anywhere on my bare skin....you should try it.
