in this video we take the savage out for its first proper run. also put the speed gps on to see how fast it can go on and off road. the F5.9 nitro engine is loud and sounds awesome. always fun bashing a big ofroad nitro rc car
Had a 03 Savage 25, right when they released. The aftermarket was crazy back then with instant gratification to needed fixes. Good luck finding that aftermarket now. Won MANY races back then, once a few things were sorted. Ended up with an reverse delete extended chassis and a Ed Bridges Nova .28 8 port with a 3 shoe alum. Put a heat gun on that new motor for break-in tanks. You want 200-210°F, before it ever sees the Rotostart. Cover the carb with a chunk of alum can for a heat shield as you preheat. Lockable hemostats on the engine fuel line so you don't hydrolock. I still preheat all of my engines, no matter the gallons thru. They start soo much easier, and easier on the Rotostart and starter boxes. I actually still use the Rotostart assembly on several models I have. Remember the early aftermarket I talked about?. You could get the bits to fit a Rotostart to just about ANY engine back then. Thanks for the Vid.
That's definitely a tough-looking truck. You can't beat Nitro powered RC Monster Trucks! I'm currently running the Kyosho USA-1 Nitro and I recently raced against a Traxxas T-Maxx 3.3 Nitro. I would love to race against the HPI Savage someday. I have a question for you: why do you rev the throttle up and down so much? I myself prefer to keep the throttle nice and smooth and steady, like I would when I'm driving a full-size vehicle. Anyway, thanks for your video, and I will subscribe to your channel!
This is awesome ! I noticed it's not shifting, I posted a video in my page yesterday. I removed the gears, shimmed them and set the shift points, I feel like that's something they should set from factory so that we don't need to open the transmission case and deal with that when we buy it. But so far I love the truck !
Couldn’t agree more, HPI shouldn’t be sending these out till the transmission is fixed, although I’m happy with mine it’s still a beast of a thing I’ll check the video out now 👍🏻
Almost everyone I know is having problems with it not shifting it's been out long enough that it should be fixed by now but still a nice rig none the less transmission is only thing holding me back at this point!
@@jamiefox8670 Gotcha, it's an easy fix, don't let that hold you back. I shimmed mine and set the shift points and was good to go from day 1. I think most Savages you need to set the shift points before you run it. Makes no sense but it's like they just screw the parts in and and send them lol. I love my XL, it's the best Savage I've ever owned and I've had like 8. Right now I have 3 all XL's. Buy it, you won't regret it.
@@NitroRcDr Im thinking of getting the hpi savage xl flux v 2 the orange one but id need to upgrade the servo for sure. my old one had a weaker one to. I loved mine because i only ever broke cheap parts and only on big air or slam in curb. Id want a hpi vorza s truggy but they seem to sit to low for me ! and no tower to tower center brace ! I like Corally to but they are not durable enuff for me .. so its gonna be a Hpi Savage XL v2 flux ( orange one ) with no silly deans plugs and get better servo or a Arrma Talion EXB 6s with just a couple cheap uprade like back bumper and better wing mount. That Arrma Talion EXB just might be more tougher then my old school savage x 4.6 What do you think bud ? Im a big HPI fan to ! I loved my savage but im open minded to and have never owned a truggy.
that truck will run a lot faster if you lean out the low and high needle, start with the high and then tune the low. you'll see a 30 percent increase in power
Since they changed manufacturer they these new savages never change gear I have had so many come in with nogear change issues I own 20+ savages and know these new ones are not up to scratch
A 'not shifting' gear issue is no big deal as HPI can hopefully step up to the plate and take care of the issue at the factory. I'm just glad spare parts can be easliy had again to keep my older Xl's running for another 20yrs. That's the real gem here.
Sometimes nitro can be very frustrating, but for me once you have them set up they are awesome. The noise and the smell the smoke is all parts that make it cool. But on the other hand plugging a battery in and switching it on to have crazy power and speed also with the reliability is so much easier.
Electric sucks, waiting ages for lipos to charge and you need loads for a good day, nitro will always be better .electric for people who can't set nitro up
@@dgrc Iv only owned Nitro but next id like to get Electric. Mybie not though because I love to learn and even trouble shoot nitro. After all we have youtube these days. Back in the day you looked up to a friend or asked a back yard mechanic haha
Surprised a 5.9 would start without breaking the 1way bearing without a break in. I’ve always had to loosen the glow plug and add head shims. The engine must not be that tight. Not gonna last. If you know you know.
Ugh that tranny. HPI has carried over the not shifting issue from the last gen Savage to this one. Why HPI, why???? They have a legendary truck that used to never have any shifting issues so this is a disaster in my mind. The adjustment screw is a little off so it’s not easy at all to get a driver into. I have the previous gen Savage 4.6 and I’ve only run it 5 or so times because it’s stuck in second gear so no wheelies at all. I’m going to have to remove the whole transmission in order to proper get the screw and there’s gonna be a whole lot of adjustments to get it sorted out. Ugh HPI…….
