One of the darkest days in Metallica history. On tour in Sweden, a bus driver loses control after skidding on black ice, and Cliff is thrown through a window, and then crushed by the bus, ending the life of the greatest bassist ever. May Cliff Burton's soul rest in peace, and may he rock on forever in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, alongside his brothers, James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, and Kirk Hammett. All I can picture is soldiers in world war two... machine guns... planes bombing.... artillery.... mortars.... grenades... soldiers dying left and right.... rushing through gunfire... then the aftermath.... This song accurately describes the battle of Compton Hill, also know as the battle of Shy's Hill during the Battle of Nashville Dec 14th and 15th 1864. John McArthur, on his own initiative, ordered his three brigades to charge the hill. McArthur's attack broke the Confederate line and soon threatened to sweep up Hood's whole army. Col. William Shy of the 20th Tennessee died trying to hold off the Union onslaught-Compton's Hill was renamed Shy's Hill in his honor. The boys from Minnesota were so angry that the brave Colonel and his men fought to the death. They captured him then put him on his knees and shot him right between the eyes with a Colt revolver. They then speared him up on a tree at the top of that hill with a rifle and bayonet. If you ever in Nashville, it is right next to downtown. I always go there and I play this song.

Remember when i was at the age of 16 or 17.. There was this bar, Saturday evening... Metallica night.. Coming in and this was the first song they played... 22 years ago but still a monster

I really do love this song.

Touting gun all they run through the endless brey...Or they fight for the rite yes but for who's to say? .... I never read the liner notes for the actual words. But by taking band in school i guess they were right for we learned how to read music and the feelings you should have while playing it...I don't think i was very far off.
