honestly, everything about this is perfect, the whole “im mad with fabrizio” attitude made the performance very remarkable and even with the mistakes, this is EPIC.
@@manbona as a musician fab never messed up, Jules was just being a singer. The internet is a weird place my friend. Everytime i watch this im like “wtf are people talking about?” He never flipped him off, he never talked shit. The internet sucks dude and people make stuff up
After 6 years we've finally debunked what happened in this performance. a) They were pissed off at Fab, mainly. Not only does he fuck up at the end, but they had already done two takes before, due to his mistakes. 0:17 - 0:20 Fab takes tempo on sticks with a stoic face. 0:40 “Fking pussy” meant for Fabrizio. 1:09 Nikolai nodding at Fab like 1:10 Julian showing the middle finger to Fabrizio (behind his left leg) 1:32 Even Albert turning and looking at Fabrizio letting him know a change would come. 1:35 Another Julian’s “Fking pussy…Come on!” for Fabrizio Constant death stares from Julian to Fab 1:46, 1:58, 2:07 2:38 Jules singing “Except death” *points at Fab* “or anything else.” 3:14 Singing “I don’t know why” crouching painfully knowing Fab should’ve played the extended version instead of “Radio ending”. b) At the end Letterman going ‘Alright?' Julian is like: "I fked up, did’t I, Fab?" 'No, no. I think u’re fine. Are these ur drums or rentals’ , then ’You’re being a little too hard on yourselves’ (to Julian). Letterman says at the beginning: "I've gotta get my hearing checked" As if saying: c) They had to perform this song 3 times until they got this decent version (ofc amazing version for me as a fan). 3:28 Ending the song like: 3:35 - 3:59 Fab unnaturally doesn’t stop smiling. 3:54 Julian with sardonic thumbs up and pointing at Letterman’s band. Can you explain what exactly is going on? Jules seems mad at the drummer, the long haired guitarist has eyes like a leopard seal (strung out) and everyone just looks upset
Rufio DIES they messed up. The drummer (Fab) played a different version of the song causing Julian to mess up the lyrics. In my opinion they still did great despite that
Letterman must have been like "I've had this guy on my show for ten years and he still acts like a child, just less drunk. Still tremendously talented though."
Ah back when the strokes hated each other. Tough times edit: i commented this a year ago, obviously they don’t hate each other now but they didn’t get along during the recording of angles (self admittedly) it doesn’t matter either way, move on from this comment
The only mistake I picked up on in this take is at the end where Julian (according to the album version) is supposed to say "you get taken all the time for a fool, I don't know why" twice but after the first time Fab switches to the crash cymbal(which he doesn't do on the album version) which i think triggered a panic response in Julian causing him to default on the lyric "i dont know why" early to salvage a too early of an ending.
I’m obsessed with this video and performance, I come back to it again and again and I don’t understand what Fab did wrong, he sounds incredible. Jules is on fire, and Albert, Nick and Nikolai are tight as hell. What other rock band of today has guitars that tight? Insane.
I guess listening to the 'radio ending' vs. the album version explains it. I was kinda annoyed at the ending too, since I only know the album version in my head 🤣
if you look at the left corner in the 1:47 minute you can see how much julian was pissed, it looks like he's going to kill fab
Valensi should write more songs. He completely wrote this song, from my understanding, and this is one of the best songs off the new album, if not the best.
he's bloody amazing. Seriously, I'm disappointed that the band doesn't get the kudos they deserve. They're all excellent excellent musicians - SO tight every time I've heard them. Julian smushes it all up with his lazy singing style, but the band are always so rock solid. Nick and Albert would have to be in a convo about the best guitarists of the century (so far).
@@jelmarcios.b2445 There’s no radio edit for this song. If so, it would have two different variations. Julian was fed up as they have already performed the song once but he wanted to do a retake (presumably because Fab did mess up on that one). Hence why Letterman starts off by saying, ‘I’ve got to get my hearing checked’ as he heard nothing wrong with the first one. Second time, (which is this one) Julian was still upset after the first take and kept blaming Fab, despite him messing up the lyrics on this one.
I use to listen to the strokes with a list of other bands and I never paid attention to artists or who is actually in the band but ever since the new album i'm paying more and more attention and it's cool digging up the meanings to the new album. The SHADE at fab killed me though lmao
0:40 A pissed off Julian exclaims, “fuckin pussy”, to himself 1:09 Flips Fab off behind his back (you can see the gesture as he pulls his hand back around) 1:31 Albert abruptly snaps around to stare at Fab, like “wtf are you doing man” 1:35 Julian says “Fuckin pussy. I believe it's because they already were not getting along very well, and now Fab is not playing how Julian wanted him to.
a_little_revolution Good catch man ! I dont think Albert is saying wtf to Fab hes just pointing out that the change comes up next... And good catch on the left of frame Julian at 1:46
Andrew D. Okay, I've listened to the ending of this song in every version I can find to try to figure out what's going on. I don't catch any mistakes with Fab -- he plays the same beats in each measure, regardless of the words, just like in the studio version and in other live versions. Nick plays a high progression for "You get taken for a fool..." and then brings it down for "I don't know why..." Both were doing just what they were supposed to do. Julian was supposed to sing "You get taken for a fool" a second time and he started to, but then switched it to "I don't know why", filled in the next missing line with "Radio ending" (which normally would have been the first "I don't know why" of the last two) and then sang the last "IDKW" where it was supposed to be. (He had to add a line since he skipped one.) So the only one I see messing up was Julian, even though he started out okay on that line. Just got confused, I guess. Nice recovery. Interestingly, they added that "Radio ending" line the following month at Coachella, only that time all the other lines were sung properly and it was simply added between the last two "IDKWs". Only slightly obsessed. Really.
LeavingIt Blank Nooonono. I was wrong, And so was everyone. No one actually fucked up, but Fab, instead of doing the normal ending, messed up and did the "Radio Ending". Hence Jules change of lyrics :P.
How did he mess up? I didn't hear him do anything differently than he's done for any other performance. But Julian definitely skipped a line. Didn't seem necessary, but I'd have to see the written music to really know what's going on.
Dude, didn't you rad my comment? He didn't quite messed up, he just mistook the original ending with the "RADIO ENDING". And then Julian just sang "Radio ending" to warn the others not to fuck up as well. Besides that and Jules "motivated" singing, everything was ok
i will always love this particular performance bc they (especially julian) seemed like they actually wanted to be there. that makes all the difference for their ferocity
it’s not even one of my favorite songs but i keep coming back to this performance because of the passive aggression throughout the whole thing lmao it’s just so funny even if it’s not true like jules said

Whoever said that Julian was mad at Fab is totally right! At 1:09 you can see Julian flipping him the bird for playing the wrong version.
@@sayurlodeh905 when they play live they have an extended ending and the "radio ending" referring to the original studio version. Apparently Julian planned for them to play the extended ending but the drummer kept fucking with him because they might have beef
@@whoppy1131 It could be that Julian forgot to sing the radio edit and sang "radio ending" out of frustration with himself. He told Letterman at the end "I fucked up"
I think Julian Casablancas seems mostly mad at himself here, more than his bandmates. he's cursing at himself throughout the performance and lets out a barely audible "I fucked up" to Dave Letterman after they've finished. IMO the ideas about him being pissed off purely at Fab Moretti are reading into it too much. Casablancas gets mad in a lot of performances when he can't seem to get ahold of his voice or forgets words/parts of the song. here's a fucking essay about it lmao he fudges a line or two in this performance and you can tell that he's not keeping track of the song structure well at the end, he could've been under rehearsed or just feeling the pressure of a TV performance. The bit around 3:14 he obviously just forgets the lyrics and knows that he messed up (starts trying to sing the "you're so gullible but I don't mind" part, I think), nobody else on stage made a mistake there. He kind of seems like he was expecting the song to end, too, the way he's doing that ultra-dramatic pose towards the camera; but there's no version of the song which ends there, so it ostensibly wasn't a mistake for the band to play through. the "radio ending" joke I think is just something he's doing to fill time, because he's already fucked up the ending and can't find his footing. he also vamps a lot like this at the end of songs, especially nowadays. he awkwardly tries to pick it up the outro melody again the way it's recorded but doesn't really find it. again, not anything to do with the band. Around 0:38 when he's cursing off-mic, he just seems annoyed that he didn't deliver the line the way he wants to, he's reaching into his upper register more and it sounds a little wonky, nobody made an error there, and he reacts annoyedly a few seconds later when he's trying to hit a similar melody and says "fuck" up towards the ceiling. again, it's pretty typical of Julian Casablancas to do stuff like that when he messes up. Around 1:28, he sings "you get taken all the time for a fool" when on the second repeat the lyric is meant to be "you get taken for a fool all the time". I think his reaction after the chorus ends most likely has to do with that. I think they did do multiple takes, but that's not atypical for 'live' music on TV, so I don't know if that's got anything to do with it. The middle finger thing is weird, but I don't think anyone can really say why he did that; again, there's no obvious error with the band. Maybe Fab was dragging slightly on the fill into the chorus? Doesn't really make sense to me, I would think it's just something he's doing with his hands - like any of his other onstage mannerisms; the finger pistol towards his head, pointing at the audience/camera, bowling the mic, etc. The joke Dave makes about the drumkit being a rental is probably just poking fun about the band's logo being on the kick. the whole theory about the band being pissed off at each other is entertaining but I doubt it's accurate.

I can understand his frustration with flubbing a line, he's a known perfectionist and since this is brand new material he doesn't want to start changing the lyrics; there will be time for that after they've performed these songs again and again and again at shows and festivals throughout the year.
3:44 love the way that albert hammond jr just summarily salutes/dismisses letterman's faux merci. that off the cuff gesture is maybe the coolest thing in the whole video!
