As someone with a substance problem, I know that Tom isn't comfortable talking about this. Alcoholism is embarrassing to admit, even when you're clean, because there is so much negative stigma around it that points to a weakness of will and a lot of other bollocks. Of course addicts know it's not that but don't expect the public to, hence they're uncomfortable talking about it. But he handled it alright. A real man.
I am an alcoholic who has no problem saying it,telling it,admitting to it. There is no shame in it. I will drink to my last breathe. :) And Tom never had a substance abuse issue.
He is so honest of talking about his dark place, to me he sounds like a very confident man, he knows that anyone can go down that road, what counts is that you pull yourself out of that bad place and remain in a good place, excellent actor!
It wasnt uncomfortable for him. He went very public about mentoring at those recovery centers. He brought in camera crews and all that. He was always very open about his past substance abuse and how He wronged everyone in his life bcs of it. He realy shined a light on the topic That is just what He talks about. If there was pauses, He was just taking time on how to word it, reading the room of the audiences that might have given the vibe they were stunned about the topic.
That shit made me tear up. Because I understand that stare. Addiction is so traumatizing. Add on top of it the original trauma that leads one to use drugs as an attempt to easy the pain
You can tell Tom was really uncomfortable when he was talking about his darker past. Fair play to him for having the bravery to talk about it on national tv.
He is incredibly humble! I have so much respect for this man. After what he's been through, (be it his own choices or not) for him to turn his life around and become the man he is today is just inspiring. Love you Edward Hardy

At around 5:20 when Tom is asked how long he's been sober and the crowd is about to give him a round of applause, he actually starts to say "No, no..." and in the few seconds following he actually looks uncomfortable. This is why I love Tom. He is truly and genuinely a humble person. He didn't want any recognition for his sobriety. He's staying clean simply because he truly wants to stay clean. A wonderful man.
Tom seems like such a laid back, humble guy. Not pretentious in the slightest. You can't fake the genuine appreciation he showed when he was being complimented at the end - no matter how good of an actor you are. Also, when they clapped him for being sober, he didn't want the applause. This guy is amazing. I felt so sorry for him, being asked about his past like that. I wish Ross had just not mentioned it. Clearly Tom wasn't comfortable discussing that stuff, but Ross kept pushing it.
It all starts funny and jokingly, but then the interviewer goes the awkward way with some questions. You can tell Hardy's uncomfortable with every new question. Fuck the question/comments about "wonky teeth". His teeth as they are are one of the reasons I like him so much. I just think they look adorable. Wonderful man.

If one didn't know that Tom Hardy was a Brit, they might assume his accent on the movie "Lawless" was his native tongue. And as someone who spent some time in Central Appalachia, close to where the movie was based on, his rural Virginia accent was spot on.
It's a sign of how grounded Tom is that he doesn't even bat an eyelid (he looks away, in fact) when they applaud him for being 7 years sober--like it actually was no joke and he doesn't want praise for that. What a guy.

my mate is an ex addict, used to be terrible, he has the exact same problem as Tom Hardy, he finds it difficult to maintain eye contact and start conversations. once he's talking he's fine, but starting them he finds difficult. Tom reminds me a lot of him

Well surprised they talk about the Warrior in this, thought he had rode the bulk from that shoot into the "bane" role but it was actually off the back of Bronson, as this interview was done circa 2010, crazy.
His face at 4.03 just says it all, he looks fed up with the questioning and if Jonathan had done his research he'd have known all this but Tom goes ahead with it anyway cause he's a gentleman.
