HRI Talks - Risky Drinking: What Is It and Why Does it Matter?
(Full recording of Sept. 27 virtual event)
As evidence for the health benefits of alcohol use weakens and evidence of harm grows, is there a safe level of alcohol consumption? How should we define “risky” drinking in Canada?
Join us to explore the evolving conversation on the risks and benefits of alcohol use, and how our understanding of them has changed over time. This vital discussion brings together three of Canada’s leading experts in substance use and addiction to discuss the latest knowledge on the risks of alcohol use and its implications for our communities and ourselves.
A moderated discussion is followed by a live Q&A with audience members.
Objectives:
• Explore how the risks associated with alcohol use compare with other health risks, such as unhealthy food choices and cigarette smoke.
• Discuss the health, social and economic impacts of alcohol use at the individual, community and societal levels.
• Gain insight into how Canada’s alcohol consumption guidelines can be a tool for policy advancements and public education that support substance use health.
Featuring:
-Dr. Tim Stockwell, PhD, FRSC
Former director of the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research (CISUR) and professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada.
-Dr. Alexander Caudarella, MDCM CCFP AM ABAM(d)
CEO of the Canadian Centre for Substance Use and Addiction (CCSA) and family physician based in Ottawa, Canada.
-Dr. James MacKillop, PhD, CPsych, FCAHS
HRI senior scientist and professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada. Holds the Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Translational Addiction Research.
Moderated by Hannah Sung, journalist and co-founder of Media Girlfriends.
