Well now I know what my next project is. I’ve had an old (1999) Squier Stagemaster HSH of this same 2 pot configuration taken apart and stored up in my attic for at least 12 years. I always wanted to put the old girl back together and coil split the pickups with push/pulls but I never knew how, until now. This vid is exactly what I needed. THANK YOU!

Love it. I've done this mod adding a mini-toggle - but in recent years i'm getting more and more hesitant to go crazy drilling holes - especially on USA-made guitars. Now I see exactly how to do ti with the push-pull and I'm gonna give it a whirl. Thanks! Glad I found your channel -this is pro-quality information. It's worth $$ - you should monetize.

This is interesting and works fine for the coil splitting, but it's not correct for the bridge pickup switching. There should not be a jumper from the switch A1 to B1 as this joins the bridge pickup to the common. Instead, a 2nd wire should run from A1 on the 5 way switch to A2 of the vol pot switch. This replaces the wire shown from the 5 way switch B4 to the vol pot switch. It will then work correctly. As a side note, in normal strat switching mode, if you have that quiet out of phase sound in positions 2 and 4, you can reverse the wires on the middle pickup.

Breja ToneWorks Yes I'm really happy with this config, although when vol pot is down the neck is split and bridge is in series, and vice versa. Hey I hope you can reply me I bought all the components to make a dave murray strat and have HHH pickups (2 humbuckers and one hot rail in the middle) I wired it all up however I am getting a low twangy sound from all the pickups as if there is half the output... is there a scheme for a normal hhh wiring with one volume (push pull) and two normal tone caps? thanks in advance
@fridtjofvigen1053

Hi, I'm trying to do a variation on this where the 5-way works the "standard" way, and the end result mostly is the same, but with a couple distinct differences. The option with all three pickups is not available, and rather than changing the functionality of the 5-way, the extra switch overrides the 5-way instead so it always gives you the neck/bridge parallel when the switch is engaged. A third switch determines whether the humbuckers are split or not in parallel mode, but not otherwise. The ultimate goal is to be able to go from the bridge-humbucker (or whichever setting you have) to the neck/bridge parallel by just hitting a 2-way switch, which you can do in a fast and not necessarily precise motion. The signal routing works correctly, but there are some side effects I can't seem to get rid of. The middle pickup won't shut up in parallel mode with the coil tap disengaged, and in regular 5-way mode any pickup not having the hot wire connected to the jack tip still pick up sound. Any suggestions on how to mend the problem while still maintaining the desired functionality?

Great info. I have a 1993 Gibson LP Studio Lite with the M3 Electronics. It has the same HSH arrangement and a 5 way switch, but uses a single mini-toggle (DPDT) to split the coils to single coil mode. Not sure how I would do this with the configuration I have on my Les Paul Studio. Is there a diagram I can download or access? I am also not sure of the color coding of the original Gibson 496R (Neck) and 500T (bridge) pickups. Thanks and super well done video. Thanks. Phil NYC Area

Hello man! I've been studying carefully your vids since I'm really interested in modding my own guitars, love the one on 5 way switches, really cleared that one up for me, combined with a website I found about DPDT switches I was able to analize the working of your switching scheme. Please correct me if I'm wrong As far as I can tell the available combinations using your scheme are: [Volume pot down, tone pot down] Pos1: Humbucker bridge Pos2: Humbucker bridge and middle Pos3: Middle Pos4: Middle and humbucking neck Pos5: Humbucking neck [Volume pot down, tone pot up] Pos1: Single bridge Pos2: Single bridge and middle Pos3: Middle Pos4: Middle and Single neck Pos5: Single neck [Volume pot up, tone pot up or down] Pos1: Same as before Pos2: Same as before Pos3: Sames as before Pos4: All Humbucking + middle on Pos5: Bridge and Neck Humbucking Btw, thanks for sharing your awesome knowledge

@mattesb4281
@mattesb4281 4 года назад
@@BrejaToneWorks I'm sorry, but I don't agree. I think he is wrong. I can't see a reason why the tone pot further shouldn't split the humbuckers when the volume pot is up. The only thing the volume pot up does is to add the bridge pickup to the positions 4 an 5 of the switch. I can't see where there could be any influence to the coil split. In my opinion the correct combinations should be: ... [Volume pot up, tone pot down] Pos1: Same as before Pos2: Same as before Pos3: Same as before Pos4: All Humbucking + middle on Pos5: Bridge and Neck Humbucking [Volume pot up, tone pot up] Pos1: Same as before Pos2: Same as before Pos3: Same as before Pos4: all three Single Pos5: Bridge and Neck Single So your wiring has overall 13 possible pickup combinations. If I'm wrong with this opinion please be so kind to explain me my mistake, thank you. best regards

@@mattesb4281 thanks for this clarification. i really needed it, since i did the mod, and frankly, some positions do sound the same to my ears, so i need to map these combos. today i used a multimeter to see the values in every position. in the middle position the value was the same (in all combinations), obviously cause it cant be split, but on the bridge position & bridge + middle with vol pot up has the same values as vol pot down.

Hello Breja, for what applies to my situation, is working beautifully. I wired it exactly as shown for the bridge and neck pickup. I have a push/pull for the volume and first tone and a regular 500k for the second tone pot. My middle pickup is a DiMarzio P Rail I believe(4 wires like a humbucker). I ran the hot to A2 and the pole wires to L3 on the second tone pot and it isn't doing anything. The 1st tone is actually controlling it. Might you have any tips for me? I have a 5 way switch with the connectors in a straight line numbered from 1 to 8. How should I do the numbering? Option 1: A1 = 1 A2 = 2 A3 = 3 A4 = 4 B1 = 5 B2 = 6 B3 = 7 B4 = 8 Option 2: A1 = 1 A2 = 3 A3 = 5 A4 = 7 B1 = 2 B2 = 4 B3 = 6 B4 = 8

How to use parallel pickup connection instead of coil split?
@TheSGman66
@TheSGman66 8 лет назад
Hi Breja! i watched this and another of your videos similar to this but i'm completely ignorant of anything to do with wires so this is what i'm looking for. I'm making a strat body that is a rear routed HSH. Im looking for a configuration where i can get each independent pickup , along with the original single coil 'far left' and 'second to left' position sound. Is this the video for me? Or is the "Super HSH wiring scheme" video what i want?

+TheSGman66 If you have the letters SG in your name and you don't own an SG, that's a crime. :) Anywho... When you say far left, I'm a bit confused. Normally the positions would be like: 1 = Neck, 2 = Neck/Middle, 3 = Middle, 4 = Middle/Bridge and 5=Bridge. This mod will give you all of those positions along with 6 = Neck/Bridge and 7 = Neck/Middle/Bridge. Of course, if you split the HBs, you will get the same combinations but with single coils instead of humbuckers. This mod splits both HBs at the same time but if you would prefer to split them independently, you'll need an additional switch. If you're not interested in things like phase - I'd tell you to stick with this mod. Hope this helps... If, not - email directly at: BrejaToneWorks@gmail.com Don

Love your videos! I want to mod a guitar so that it is HSH with only one volume pot (no tone or 7 way mod) with coil split. Is there a way I can do that?

+Paul S This is my dad's account (I'm a 12 year old kid with lots of dreams to make guitars that suit me the best).
@BrejaToneWorks
@BrejaToneWorks 8 лет назад
+Paul S Well hopefully your Dad knows you're using his account. A guitar with not tone control? Why? That's so sad. Anyways - Yes, you can do such a mod however you need to decide. Are you going to split both HBs or just one? If you split both, they will split at same time meaning you won't have a HSS or SSH but either a HSH or SSS. If that's ok with you - watch my video on Guitar Switches: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-C77GaqVjqbI.html at around the 7:20 mark. You'd just simply wire both HBs up to either side of the Switch and you're good to go. If you need more help, email me directly at: brejatoneworks@gmail.com

+Breja ToneWorks Sorry for the late response. I was thinking about it, and finally decided I would leave the tone pot on. I discovered some really chunky rhythm tones that I really like (although I mostly play lead, there are some times I need a good crunch tone). So I'll leave the tone on, and split both HBs at once with the tone pot. Thanks so much for the help! Oh, and yeah, my dad knows that I'm using his account.

Anybody out there know how to wire the 7 way mod using a push/pull tone pot and not coil splitting?
@mattesb4281
@mattesb4281 4 года назад
that's quite easy: don't connect the coilsplit wires of both humbuckers (red and white) to the tone pot (A2 and B2 of the tone pot) and also don't connect A3 and B3 of the tone pot to ground. On each humbucker the red and white wires have just to be connected together, of course separately for each humbucker and not all four wires together! (they should already have been connected when you bought the pickups). don't connect these red and white wires to any pot or switch, just isolate them. then connect the B4 of the 5way switch to A2 of the tone pot instead of A2 of the volume pot and connect A3 of the tone pot to L1 of the volume pot instead of A3 to L1 each of the volume pot. wire everything else as shown in the video, that's it. You will get the 7way switch option when the tone pot is up and no coil split.

my switch has only 7 connectors and they are aligned on single line can you help?
@BrejaToneWorks
@BrejaToneWorks 8 лет назад
+Midnight Conversations You have an Import Version of the switch. Normally though they'd have 8 lugs too. If yours has only 7 - more than likely lug # 4 (starting from the top) would represent lugs A4+B1 on my drawings.
