+Rob S. They're not. Mac pros are made as workstation pcs. They have a lot of cores so that you can do rendering and stuff like that, but they can't run triple A titles because they're not made for it. For example, a pc with a 6700k (quad core) can feasibly run crisis as long as it has a good graphics card (970, 980, 980ti etc.) whereas a mac pro with 10 cores (or more) can't because they just don't have enough graphics power. You could spend a million dollars on a pc, but even if it has the best cpu in the world, if it doesn't have a great graphics card, it can't run vr. I hope this clears it up. It's not that the mac pro isn't a great pc, it's just that it wasn't designed for gaming so even the highest tier can't run vr.
Ugh I have a PERFECT large open spot right outside my room where my capable computer is to set up a vr system. I hope I get my hands on one soon. I LOVE how the Vive is shaping up. Good job HTC!
Great video. I was wondering about setup requirements so this is helpful. Been thinking a lot about it since I tried it a couple of weeks ago. Very much looking forward to seeing more Vive content
Well I believe he meant "the Macbook Pros" they use to edit on a daily basis.....then yeah "none of the macs would be powerful enough".....certainly Mac Pro would be very capable with its AMD FirePro D500 dual GPU setup able to run several 4K displays.....seems plenty capable with several teraflops of processing power under the hood
Seems like you could adjust the strap a little more... Try loosen up the top strap a bit for more give so that you can pull it lower to the back of your head, cupping the base of your skull. It redistributes the weight of the headset a little bit better. Thanks for the video, looking forward to seeing more of them.
+I Dunno Exactly what I was going to say. Many people who complain about the Vive and that is not for long runs wear it the wrong way. I have heard this complain and this explanation all over the internet, well said!
Lol Jaime, when was the last time you played a video game on a PC? "The size of these is rather significant, some of these are UP TO 5 gigabytes!" I love your videos man, but I couldn't help but laugh, knowing that my Battlefield 4 install folder is nearing 60GB :D
it's best to mount on the wall instead of a tripod....one u can't the light houses higher, seeing more of the play space. also it has less chance to move. any vibration to the lighthouse units will transmit to the vr experience....u don't want to limit getting motion sick as much as possible..... I mean if u accidentally knock one of those tripods over....it's game over...and that's easy with all the wires around
+Timothy Shelsea well the moment it's for PC gaming, the product is really focused on a niche. Like the Tesla Model S, I feel the Vive is a good way to gain traction before the mainstream product comes in the future, (Like the Model 3) ^JR
thanks Jaime! I vote the Vibe a flop, not because it isn't amazing, or because I think HTC have made a bad product. It's because I have a superb racing wheel beside my very powerful, liquid cooled PC that I hardly ever touch. Why? Because moving the keyboard, the Wacom, re-arranging the cables and then bolting down the wheel is way too much of a pain in the arse! The Vibe is obviously much more fiddly than that.
id really like to know how immersive the vive is. by that i mean how close is it in completely surrounding your frame of view, by how much does the vr environment appear to be in front of you as opposed to you feeling like you are actually inside the vives world? any idea on an educated guess how many generations of vr we have until it fully feels like we are in another world? how is the depth of field? perhaps its difficult but ive yet to see any vive or rift review really articulate this. as someone whos smitten by the possibilities of vr, and will be saving up thousands for a pc just for vr, idk where my expecations for vr should be since i havent got to demo any sets.
Gotta pull strap in back, lower on back of the head. Too high up and will be un-balanced. I agree it's not super light, but I've worn mine for at least 2-3 hours straight, without an issue.
+jagadeesh jawkz At minimum the PC is going to cost a grand (US dollars) if you build it yourself. Though building is really easy. Anybody can do it. And the Vive itself is $800. Definitely not cheap. But that is how early adoption goes.
Great introduction video! But I am curious about the side effects of prolonged use of the Vive. After playing for a long time, does the user feel nausea, dizziness or any other type of discomfort? So far I've heard that it is different for each user.
+Bozhidar Atanasov (BoTheBuddah) I have no problems with it. On the contrary, yesterday I got so immersed that if took me a while to remember I had a headset on ^JR
What tripod are you using? I just ordered the Vive and want to get tripod's that work in this situation... Are there any other pieces in addition the the tripod you need to make it point correctly?
+Luke Lloyd There's space for glasses and an adjuster on the side to move the lenses forward/back. As well, you can separately adjust it to match the separation of your eyes.
+Angel-O Unlikely, the amount of data that it takes to drive a 2160x1200 pannel at 90Hz is collosal. about 1GB/s I approximate if you have 32bit colour pixels. Getting that in a wireless standard with low latency is next to impossible right now. Next version will likely be higher resolution, lighter etc, but probably not wireless.
(Someone please help) I'm just gonna stop looking and start asking: I keep getting Error 208 HDMI cables not being detected. I cannot for the life of me get past this. I tried unplugging, installing the drivers for my graphics card, using another HDMI, and nothing's working. I've been trying to fix this for four hours, now.
Hi I won a HTC VIVE at gamescom and i have a macbook pro. Is there no way whatsoever that i can do it on there. If not i can use my very old and ancient pc i guess.
+Pocketnow I mean there is so many tech and gadgets on you and cables sticking out and arround you, man you look like alien being fused with a technology. (It's a semi compliment :-) )
Do any of these VR headsets function as a regular monitor? I sold love to get one for my truck, instead of rigging a TV monitor and keyboard the way I have now on the passenger seat.
+Alex Rolli The challenge will be having the base stations detect you, in addition to the amount of power outlets you'll need. And yes, you still need the monitor to start the game play. ^JR
+Pocketnow yikes I see. It'll probably be a home only thing for now. Too bad, was really hoping it's be a monitor replacement for those of us on the go.
