A clip of Requiem for a Dream actress Ellen Burstyn interviewing the writer of the original book, Hubert Selby Jr. The interview is from the special features on the Requiem for a Dream DVD.
I'm sure you'll agree that it's an incredibly moving and heartfelt interview, and a look into the mind of one of the great writers of the last generation.

Always loved this interview. It’s been nearly twenty years I guess since I watched with the dvd of the film. He’s a very inspiring guy and it’s a joy to see two sensitive intelligent people speaking in this way. The way he said ‘I haven’t felt this bad in a while’ always stuck with me, and I think back then as a twenty year old I hadn’t heard someone express real pain and anger with such wisdom and calmness - but still really managing to express the pain, not just being philosophical about it. Just watching this video makes me feel a bit better

Thank you for putting this up. I've only read LETB but just watched a French documentary bout Hubert. A remarkable man. A kind of truthful, youthful light just shining through an old broken body. I find it hard to think of someone I find more inspiring.

here's someone who lived bravely.here's someone whose pain wasn't at last stronger than his mind. here's someone who was saved by his self-awareness. the humanity sparkling in his eyes is just moving, and of great inspiration.

Thumbs up for the Richie Havens reference! Right on, Selby. I'm in the middle of Requiem for a Dream, and I'm pretty sure it's the greatest book I've read in my life.

Amazing! What a moving interview of a deeply unassuming, self-deprecating, funny, humble genius.

The brutality of Last Exit To Brooklyn makes sense when Mr Selby sums it all up in one sentence: "It's what happens when people's lives are lived without love or empathy".

I've just read all of his Novel's over the last four months. I'm different Now and I believe better. Id's Like to say, read page 356 (?) or whatever of some of his writing of a specific Novel especially what I'd read on his book "Waiting Period"but you'll need to discover his prose on your own.
