Everyday Modernism in the California Landscape
December 10, 2013
California Modernism was marked by a response to landscape and regional climate. Architects working in this style sought to create social impact through their designs and projects. This was especially true in their development of a number of large housing tracts, which can be viewed as the culmination of this ethos.
This evening of lectures and a panel discussion focused on conservation strategies for a range of case studies associated with well-known works of California Modernism. These include works by architects Richard Neutra, Gregory Ain, Lawrence Halprin, Garret Eckbo and Moore, Lyndon, Turnbull, Whitaker Partnership, each of whom directed their designs through the integration of landscape and setting.
This event was presented in conjunction with Getty Conservation Institute's Conserving Modern Architecture Initiative, which seeks to advance the practice of conserving twentieth-century heritage: gty.art/cmai
