Mar.11 -- Related Companies CEO Jeff Blau talks about the Hudson Yards project which is about to open on the West side of Manhattan. He speaks on "Bloomberg Daybreak: Americas."
I wanted to like it but going there was a big disappointment. One gets a feeling of walking in an airport a soulless windswept dispiriting place. Dystopian is not a good description because at least that word has something edgy and cool. Hudson Yards is the opposite. Inorganic, sterile tacky and blingy... one gets the same sense of dread as walking in a hospital. Afterwards I walked up to the Flat Iron district and what a difference. Watching the light of the sunset glistening over limestone, brick, cast iron and ornate designs felt like drinking hot chocolate after being out in the cold. This is the first time I learned how architecture and design can affect how one feels. No wonder all the tech companies pay a premium to be in old industrial buildings rather than the new "modern" glassy ones.
I know what you're talking about. When I worked at Microsoft, my team got transferred to an office building in downtown Bellevue. It was cool at first because our cafeteria was on the top floor and even had an outdoor terrace that had views of Seattle and Bellevue skylines, Lake Washington, Olympic and Cascade Mountain ranges, and Mt Rainier. But it was amazingly sterile and boring. It started to drive me nuts being there after awhile.
A vibe has to be built! Like a science, the different cultures of people will handle this and will continually attract like-minded people, others will be short-term visitors who will enjoy spending a moment there. Give it time! I've visited newly built residential buildings and they were cold, empty, glassy; yet and still I wanted to invest my money and time to grow into it. On a much larger scale "Hudson Yard" will take good old fashion and immortal TIME to fill the crevices with energies of laughter, business, intrigue, celebration, relaxation... and maybe those that work with Mr. Ross can focus on this element to reach its cool atmospheric/vibes. Relax people...we shouldn't be so quick to give a negative judgement on anything business relative and/or Artistic works in its beginnings! Respectfully Sharing My Point of View!
Hudson Yards project mimicking Caruso model in a larger scale..... Definition of traditional Mall has changed.... The New York City is the main factor that will ensure the success of the Project. The same project is Boston or Chicago may not yield the same result.
put the cap on the CBE ! cross bronx expressway . use new land from cap project to build affordable housing. put a cap on RR tracks, north park ave line - bronx, 132 st -190 st. use land for affordable housing. build on the long island sound " A florida keys style overseas highway " . this will relieve the CBE
$5000 a month for average rent for a one bedroom. Foreigners will probably buy the expensive units and hold onto them. It's going to be a play field for the rich. In other words, it's one more bubble within a bigger NYC bubble.... More NY ers will leave the city in the coming years.
It’s really a beautiful thing, lying right? Let’s say it was 100 dollars abated from the tax rolls. But it spurns economic development, which allows those people financially to spend more of their money. His goal is for people to spend more, five swag more money, so he can take more of if, In the guise that it makes more sense for government to create consumers than it is act in its voters best interest. Just a beautiful slight of hand by this guy. If you want to know what they really think of it this way, they built a stairway in the middle called a stairway to nowhere. They are flat out telling you they don’t care about you. Just move away people
