Jacob, you scored big time, Dude! I longed to somehow happen upon Huell out and about somewhere shooting an episode! He was always my Dream Encounter. I adore the man forever and am absolutely devastated at the news of his death. What a profound loss for California. He was truly California Gold.
Thanks for sharing, very cool...watched with my Grandfather on Saturday nights since the 80's...Cal Gold, Visiting, etc...What memories...God Bless Huell's soul.
Jacob Soboroff that video is awesome, I was grinning the whole time watching it. Not only was Huell really cool, but he totally got it: "That's what television is all about in today's world."
Huell shows what a consumate pro he really is, not flustered by your appearance, welcoming you, still chatting with his interviewee. You came off quite well, too. Good luck with your broadcast future. Huell rocks!
You are VERY lucky to have met Huell in person. I'd love to meet him in person! BTW, I saw in on that episode as well and your footage here is fantastic! Wow, I envy you!
Jacob - I loved the Heull piece. He is a favorite of mine and has been for years, so your insider scoop was meaningful. Kudos to you. And great that HH was so dignified with you.
LOL Awesome. I saw this episode of Visiting on PBS the other night as well... so i came on here to see if you posted this on youtube like you said you would LOL. Cool stuff. Huell rules.
I had a similar experience about 14 years ago with Huell. I went down to the Music Center on Christmas Eve of 1997 where they were giving a free concert, and Huell was there shooting with Luis Fuerte, and he allowed me to interview him with my HandiCam, and gave me permission to use it. He even introduced himself as part of an I.D. bumper for my old show "Whipping Around L.A.!" Huell is a great guy!
That was very cool! i grew up in California and always enjoyed video log he has always been my favorites... right on man what a cool encounter.. Good luck Huel jr.
Too many see him "playing the idiot tourist",which is part of his show, and think that's all there is to him. This is just another fine example of the class act he really is.
Someday if Huell ever decides to visit my local taco shop or junkyard or car auction, I'll get lucky and run into him....someday.... Huell, you are the MAN!
What a nice guy...I thought he'd be pissed you just walked into his shot like that. I guess he's not worried about competition if he's on public television.
He is sooo damn cool. One of the few things I miss about living in LA and moving to Phoenix is there is no Huell here, it would be nice if he came to AZ and did a short series on his next door neighbors Arizona.
Wouldn't be a bad idea. He's been to Australia and San Ignacio Lagoon. He did a few shows from Arizona, but from Yuma and a big swap meet specializing in rocks and dijareedoos. Both were right next to the California borer, though.
Just to clarify my comment below, Huell is retiring (unofficially) from TV as of 12/31. There are some rumors floating around that he's in poor health, and the fact that he donated essentially everything in his life to Chapman College certainly doesn't help to dispel those rumors.
My wife met him a couple of times and she squeeeeezed his big arms both times she would always tell her freinds that story ......I don't have it in me to tell her he is gone .I have been keeping the news off for the past few days.... anything to keep her happy
Hi, not sure if somebody already showed this to you yet, but I came across Huell Howser's episode where you came up to him. blogs.chapman. edu/huell-howser-archives/2006/09/11/la-state-historic-park-downtown-106/ (without the space between "chapman." and "edu/"
