The Minature Railroad & Village at the Carnegie Science Center In Pittsburgh PA Is one of the most highly detailed model trains layouts In the world! Created by Charles Bowdish in his home in 1919, and now Just celebrating its 100 year anniversary this magnificent O Gauge layout is so fantastic for many reasons. It truly has a special place in my heart. Growing up as a kid I’d visit the layout yearly at the previous location the Buhl Planetarium and when it was moved to the at the time new Carnegie Science Center in 1992. It was what made me love model trains and turned me into the pghtrainfanatic lol! In more recent years I got the share the love for this layout with my Daughter Lily, she grew up seeing it many times as well. Today we’re both so excited to share this experience and video with you!

Thanks so much for this. I grew up in Tennessee but my mother and her family were from Pittsburgh. We would visit every Christmas and I just had to go to see the trains at Buhl Planetarium in the 1960's. I have had a love for trains ever since. I've often thought about that display and wondered what happened to it. Now I know. My family in the area is gone, but I need to pay another visit as I have so many fond memories of Pittsburgh, Buhl, and Western PA. Of course, I must see these trains again.

I was too young to remember the first time my folks took me to see this train layout. They tell me I was there for hours and they finally had to drag me away. The last time we went had to be 1957; I was 6 years old, and what really impressed me (besides all the animations) was how dark the room would get at night and how the buildings & streets would all light up. Just amazing. I’ve thought about this layout over the last 65 years. I’m amazed it survives. Nice to see it has grown. I’ve often wondered what gauge it was. Thank you so much for filming this and posting; almost feels like closure.

Carnegie Science Center's train layout is awesome. We go there after Christmas every year. Their steel mill is awesome, but pound for pound; space for space I think I like your steel mill better. Thanks for showcasing our home town's train layout.

That’s a great tradition Jack, I did that for years as a skid when this layout was the bulb and only open during the holidays. Thanks for the compliment about my steel mill also. I actually want to either rebuild it or upgrade it with additional details soon. Thanks again, Nick-

The best layout anywhere… probably the reason I’m in the hobby… I remember taking field trips in school and visiting the CSS with my family and I just wanted to spend all my time at the layout. It’s a masterpiece in my mind! My only wish is that they would run Legacy engines/O scale stuff as opposed to the postwar. That would totally take it to the next level!

Wow, truly amazing. In 1993, when I was 16, my Mom and I went to Chicago and I was lucky enough to see the O gauge layout at the Science and Technology museum. Sadly it is no longer there. You folks in Pennsylvania are very lucky to have so much railroad history and interest in the hobby! Thanks for sharing! Cheers from G's O Scale in Canada

I was born in '69 in Chicago, and went to the Museum of Science and Industry fairly often during the 70s. I LOVED that layout! We moved out of Chicago in 1979, and I visited relatives often, but never got back to the museum. In 2001, took my wife and young son and sadly, the layout was gone, but not for good. Fast forward to last summer (2021) and I took my daughter and youngest child (10 years old) to the museum and they have a massive HO scale layout in its place, so all is not lost! Part of the display has an 'L' and even a subway in the Chicago section. The new layout simulates industry moving manufactured goods from Chicago to Seattle via railroad.

I saw this "O" layout once, when I was 9 years old, in 1961. I wonder if there is an archive somewhere of pictures of it? I'm sure the modern HO replacement layout is nice, but HO has never done much for me.

Quarry scene: I remember watching a steam shovel as it dug out a whole that would someday be Tacoma General Hospital. Steam shovels were later replaced by backhoes but back then. They were huge machines like the one in this quarry scene and they ran on steam engines. They were noisy puffing chugging machines but they were magical to watch. :) Back then it was not unusual for a home to be heated by coal. My grandma's apartment was heated with coal and I can still remember the dump trucks that would come and dump coal in the coal shoot at the back of the apartment. It would go down into the chute and would be slowly, automatically be fed into the boiler in the basement that heat the building. And yes, just like in the movies, the radiators in the apartments would sometimes make a banging sound as they heated. They were also notorious for not having enough heat to keep her small apartment warm. There was a valve on them you could turn for more heat but sometimes when it was really cold out, you just did not get enough heat from them to do the job. Her apartment was on the 2nd floor. I can't even imagine how bad it must have been 6 floors up on the top floor.

If you're ever near Richmond VA look for an event called "Field Days of the Past". We went a few years ago and had a blast. They had a car show, all kinds of things that run on steam there, molasses rendering, sawmills, arts & crafts, etc. Two old gas stations that they relocated to the event site... But the year that we were there they had an old steam shovel moving a huge pile of dirt back and forth all day and it brought back memories of my childhood too!

"A busy train station" When I was a child some 65 years ago in about 1956, train stations were a very bury place. Airplanes were used but they were propeller planes only and most people traveled by train. I remember my parents taking grandma to the station to go from Tacoma Washington to Pocatello Idaho on the Union Pacific railroad. The station had hundreds of people traveling to unknown places. There was a Union station which is still there today. It is a museum now. There were passenger trains coming and going and there were military passenger cars still parked there that were still there from wwII. It was a very busy place and every part of the station had people bustling about heading to and from their trains. I can still hear the announcements in my mind of the trains being announced as they came and went. Unlike today when Amtrak that might have a train come once or twice a day, there were trains constantly coming in and out of the station all day and night. Another thing I remember is that the cities were alive. There was no such thing as a mall yet and the cities were crowded with people shopping and moving about. If you picture the city in the movie 'A Christmas Story', you are seeing how it was. I remember the trains in the store windows. The displays were magical in the eyes of my childhood. From the monkey playing the cymbals to the trains and toys all animated and making the scenes a memories I will always cherish.

I have video of this layout back when it was still at Buell. That was around 1986/87. It's still on Hi8 cassettes, which I'll be transferring over into digital format in the next months.
