For example, did you know that Perry Mason began as a popular book series? The mystery series was written by Erle Stanley Gardner, who introduced us to the character in 1933. The book series ran for over 80 full-length novels and a few short stories. He continued to write the stories even as the TV series aired.
Perry Mason also had an impact on many real judicial cases! The show has been cited in over 200 court cases. The show has also been cited in legal articles and even served as an inspiration for Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.
The show’s popularity also attracted many celebrities who wanted to make a cameo. These included stars such as Bette Davis! Did you also know that this hard-hitting legal drama was originally conceived as a soap opera?
Did you also know about how Perry Mason got his unique name? It came from a publishing house that published the children’s magazine “Youth’s Companion” called Perry Mason and Co.
You may also think that Perry Mason won every single case. This is mostly true, except for one case - which you’ll have to watch the video for!
There’s so much more to learn about this fascinating TV series. If you’re a huge fan of Perry Mason, you’ll appreciate the show even more after learning more about the backstory. If you’ve never seen the show, this video should inspire you to give it a go! In fact, it’s now available for streaming out Paramount +!

I still watch this show every night on ME TV and yes I believe that it does in fact still hold up to today. Nothing needs to be added or changed regarding it. And yes Raymond Burr was truly born to play this role. He is, always has been and always will be Perry Mason. HBO can do as they wish but Raymond Burr's version stands the test of time in my opinion. Thank you for featuring this great series.

I always felt that a lot of the success also was due to perfect casting. Not just the obvious perfection in the regulars, but the guest stars and guest actors as well. Whoever picked the actors to play those roles did a wonderful job. Perfect at picking sympathetic characters and just as perfect at picking despicable and unlikeable characters. Always spot-on.

There is plenty of good to great television out there. But the entertainment environment is highly changed including what we consumers want to see. The PC aspect has been overdone somewhat but has been more good than bad because it has broadened the world significantly. Finally, the long running Raymond Burr series is STILL very much with us. Just because we have hip-hop and rock and K-Pop does not mean that Frank Sinatra has gone into the closet or we can't enjoy Johnny Mathis. It's a big world out there. Eat it up!

One of my favorite games when I watch re-runs of Perry Mason is my version of "Where's Waldo?" where I try to spot Don Anderson, a walk-on/crowd scene actor who very rarely has a speaking role, and appears in 129 episodes, often uncredited, as a man seated in the courtroom, or a cop, or a courtroom guard at the door, or a man in a restaurant or even just a photo on a mantle. Re-watch episodes and see if you can spot him too. Just so you know what he looks like, Don Anderson appears in the very first episode, case of the Restless Redhead, as a cop who lights Perry's cigarette. Have fun.

Now as an OG, I've been watching an episode nightly for a while now and I get a kick out of it! Two things I get a chuckle out of in EVERY episode - the client always says "I didn't do it, Mr. Mason! You've got to believe me!", and then proceeds to lie to him! And every time he comes upon a crime scene at a house or an apartment, the front door is ALWAYS open a crack! I enjoyed the new adaptation on HBO. I love the orginal for sure, but I think there is room for interpretation and the new series shows a pretty realistic version of how it would have been for Perry starting out in the Depression. It wasn't pretty and I'm sure it would have been tough for him--but for me anyway it shows how much he had to learn over the years to become the amazing attorney he was in later years. Just my opinion.

The series very much holds up. A favorite as a kid, and now my favorite to watch instead of the more-recent stuff. The story never fails to grab me, and I am engrossed. That's because there are so few unnecessary frills; just the riviting mystery story on minute after the next. Stories with multiple aspects that run together. It's funny how so much of it is recycled and improbable, and yet still holds my attention as if it weren't. Great acting with marvelous and wicked one-liners by various actors. Character actors, rather than glamourous ones, predominate, with real human stories that draw me in, even though often sad. The worst character gets murdered, and the best one is proven innocent. Raymond Burr IS Perry Mason, the chivalrous and thoughtful hero.

I have always loved courtroom drama since I was a young, geeky, briefcase-toting kid (Sheldon-like). My Mom loved Perry Maon novels and the TV show, so I grew up watching the show and reading Earl Stanley Gardner since I was 5 years old in 1961. I still binge watch Perry Mason on Paramount+.

This is one show I still watch almost daily! I've seen all the shows probably five or six times each, if not more! They had a great cast of characters and special appearances! I was born about a year after the show started and it reminds me how life was back then with the styles , cars, and just how people were back then when I was growing up! The only thing that I didn't understand was how they pushed smoking cigarettes on the show when you could tell most didn't even smoke'm!?! One of the best shows ever! 😁👍

So many great facts beyond this TV series. Thank-you! PM is part of Amazon Prime and other venues so it must still be relevant. Indeed, the crimes depicted in the show seem pretty relevant today,. During the time period when the show was produced, there were few special effects so acting, dialogue, costuming, and filming were emphasized. I imagine PM will be around for a long time to come.

This show definitely can’t be surpassed! Another fact is that Executive Producer Gail Patrick Jackson led the way for female producers at the time in the TV industry. She was known as Hollywood actress Gail Patrick, who was featured in many films from the 1930s and 1940s, but she had also studied law before winning a contest given by Paramount Pictures which gave her the chance to act in movies.

@@janetdear6429 I never heard any suggestion that Raymond was his dad. He is the spitting image of Bill Williams and when he was born, Raymond was still married to somebody else. According to Barbara's biography "Destined to be Della", Williams was the jealous type and once packed his toddler daughter into the car and drove hundreds of miles to where Barbara was on location because he suspected (wrongly) that his wife was having an affair with her co-star Lloyd Bridges. If there had been the slightest possibility that he wasn't the father of Barbara's son, he would have gone ballistic and certainly wouldn't have kept quiet.

I am currently watching season 5, and have just realized the 1961 Buick Invicta/LeSabre was the best looking sedan of that era. Something about the lines of that car set it apart from the typical sedans of that generation. Paul Drake’s T-Birds were also beautiful cars.

Like a good magician employing misdirection, the guilty party was always a surprise. When I first saw the show as a young kid, I couldn't believe Miss Landers was on trial for murder. I kept looking for a Cleaver in the courtroom spectators. A couple of tidbits....Lt Tragg was declining in health rapidly and when the writers were going to basically fire him, the whole cast objected and helped Tragg through his lines and scenes. Also remember when Burger was absent for months? He was arrested at his home during a raid by the LAPD. He had a huge nude swinger's party going on with weed. He answered the door stoned and naked. The cast once again stood up for a member and refused to let him be written out permanently. The LA paper had a big headline...Perry Mason's DA jailed in Hollywood party raid. He also had cancer from smoking and did the first commercials to tell people not to end up like him and quit smoking now.

Now!! In almost every episode there’s a situation that ends up with a murder. Tragg shows up. Arrests the wrong suspect. Perry Mason defends him or her. After some digging by Paul Drake and Perry. The last 5 minutes of the show with raised voice and those magnificent glaring eyes Perry Mason makes the real killer jump up and say I did it!!! 😂😂 Hamilton is flabbergasted. And the Great Perry Mason astounds everyone!!! What’s most fascinating is people would watch this show next week! I know I grew up watching my folks NEVER miss a show!!! The thing I think I like most is that you really must sit there and pay close attention to the dialogue and whats going on from the very beginning. Also there’s ALWAYS that twist of an ending in each episode where Perry gets the REAL guilty one on the stand and confronts him/her and they have an ultra dramatic confession scene!
