Fun fact: a lot of reports of human remains and human bones on the sides of roads are actually Bear remains. Their hands and feet look remarkably like ours after decaying
I used to work at the Minnesota Zoo, and we had a sun bear back in the day, and I can confirm that these creatures are the original "uncanny valley." They are SO WEIRD and are always acting like a brain-damaged person in a suit. I don't think I will ever understand them, but I do enjoy them.
Man so Charlie gets scammed and now thought it was a fake bear, he’s really off his game and should probably just get off the internet. Just kidding btw
i'm familiar with sun bears so this wouldn't have fooled me, but it's understandable that with so much false information being propagated and espoused by formerly trusted institutions, that people would over detect deception, especially in a place like china
Now I can buy into the conspiracy that all sun bears are just actually men in bear costumes and they tricked biologists into thinking it’s a real species.
Fun fact! Sun bears aren't the smallest, it's actually the spectacled bear (the only south American bear!!). They aren't as freaky looking, but they are very very cute in an awkward way bc of the "spectacles"
Ironically, despite Spectacled Bears being the smallest living species of bear, they belong to a lineage that included the largest bears that ever lived. They're the only modern representative of the subfamily Tremarctinae, and during the last ice age it included the North American Giant Short-Faced Bear, 'Arctodus simus', the males of which could stand 11ft tall on their hindlegs and weigh over 2000lbs. They're widely considered the largest Carnivoran Mammal to have ever lived.
The fact that it’s a real bear is so scary because of how human it looks. Like if I saw one of them running towards me with legs like THAT then I would just cease to exist
I bet there’s some scary mythological, ancient Chinese tales of strange fur people standing upright like a man. There beady eyes glaring at you from the edge of the forest.
I love the constant evolution of Charles Animal knowledge, animals are probably the only thing I’m close to an expert in so seeing Charlie’s knowledge grow is great.
As a professional sun bear actor, I'm really disappointed people found out sun bears aren't actually real because now I'm out of a job and it had such a good pay too :(
After you clocked out for the day while still wearing the sun bear costume, did you commit fully and double down, wearing it the whole way home, never taking it off, fully living the life of a sun bear? :D
@razzaus1570 I usually work in zoos, one time though I was tricked I to working at a really run-down zoo and I was tranqed and transported to south-east Asia where I lived for a few months until I was rescued by my company
There’s a lot of cool and unique animals people have no idea even exist including the sun bear and I just love people’s reaction when finding out they exist lol
It's great, I love that there's a wild animal which looks SO silly that when people first see it, their gut instinct is often "Something's up here, there's no way that's a real animal!"
Well to be fair it's literally human nature to try and tell what's human and what's not, easily standing upright use of "hands" for multiple purposes and even easily seen skin folds are things we've learned to recognize as human both evolutionarily and in day to day life.
The first time I was introduced to sun bears was in a meme saying how sun bears look like a human in a bear costume. You know what I did? Researched it. Learned about the bear. Learned why it looks the way that it does. It is absolutely hilarious how some people are seeing sun bears and the first thing that flows through their mind is crippling denial lmao
I love the fact that people are now starting to realize just how strange looking sun bears are. God really pulled an elaborate prank when he dropped those guys.
@@BriaBri "I love the fact people are now starting to realize just how strange looking sun bears are" That's actually exactly what you said, you delusional toad 😂.
When he mentioned people dressing up as animals as a full time job I just instantly imagined a wide variety of creatures standing in line at a computer clocking out for the day one at a time 😂
Looking at the Hagfish and seeing how it's perfect in it's environment to such a degree that it doesn't need to evolve, automatically reminds me of bloodborne when you defeat the moon presence. You transcend human form and then transforms in a sluggish creature very similar to the Hagfish.
It's amazing to me that this has become such a big conversation, sun bears went viral as a meme like ten years ago for their notoriously awkward behavior and appearance, being likened to a human doing a bad impression of a bear.
Imagine it from the bears perspective. He might be wondering if the creatures staring at him from outside his enclosure are just sunbears wearing human suits.
After watching this, all of a sudden I have the strong desire to order a convincing bear costume online, invite my parents over to my apartment, put it on, and see how long it takes for them to realize it's actually me inside it. Ideal for a good Halloween prank.
your comment makes me want to buy a convincing bigfoot costume. remember though stay on your property because that dudes right somebody very well could shoot you. me theyll just take grainy pictures and videos lol
@@Potatoesop bear have BIG body. MUCH ground to cover. skin get pushed together when less body to cover. me neanderthal and even me understand that. you plank of wood
What gives it away as a fake is the fact the bears mouth never closes. You ever seen an animal walking around with no facial expressions and keeping it's mouth open like that?
As someone from Malaysia, seeing people react and thinking the Malayan sun bear is a fake creature is pretty hilarious 😂 but yeah they’re weird cool lil dudes
For well over a decade now people have been saying, "Sun bears are humans in disguise". They're very adorable creatures. here's a bit of a wiki quote on them, "Sun bears are shy and reclusive animals, and usually do not attack humans unless provoked to do so, or if they are injured or with their cubs; their timid nature led these bears to be often tamed and kept as pets in the past."
Actually knowing about zoology, this whole situation has been really funny to me. Sun bears are just strange, mostly because they’re the most Basel species of bear alive today along with its close relatives, the spectacled bear the sloth bear. Both are the only bears that regularly eat insects, with the sloth bear’s diet being almost exclusively insects. They are the closest living group to the famous short faced cave bear from the ice age, which makes they’re diet and size all the weirder.
This used to be the case but dna has shown that the panda is the most basal, second being the short faced bears (with the spectacled bear being the only living rep), followed by sloth bear and then the rest of the bears. Sun bear is only basal to both species of black bears, with brown & polar bears being basal to those three.
Sun bears are the world's smallest bears at around 28 inches at the shoulder and 143 lbs for the largest ones. There are two species: the Malaysian sun bear and the Bornean sun bear. They are very good climbers and spend most of their livelihood in trees up to 23 feet off the ground. Being omnivores, sun bears have a broad diet of ants, bees, beetles, honey, termites, seeds, several kinds of fruits, birds, and deer.
I live in that city and have been to that zoo and seen the bears. They look weird standing up but it is just a bear, no tricks! It's just waiting for the crowds to feed it, no one really stops that happening there.
That loose skin thing is something in all bears I believe. It's a defense for bites and slashes from other animals. Since the skin is loose it can move with incoming attacks and minimize skin damage.
Sunbears are just one of the really weird bear species, and that's why I love them. They look so absurd standing up, but walking around normal theyre a cute little bear.
Saw these bears when I went to the Great Wall of China in 2014. They’re legit and kinda sad. They have them all in pits and people toss food at them from the walls. The bears know how to wave and act cute to get treats from people.
8:12 I don’t think Charlie understands just how difficult it would be to convincingly fake a giraffe. You would either need MULTIPLE people in a suit with great teamwork and coordination, or you would need the most advanced animatronic the world has ever seen.
I discovered the miracle that is the sun bear about three years ago, and my favorite thing to do is to show people a picture of the creature and watch as they try and comprehend the fact that the bear is in fact a real animal. God bless the sun bear.
My brain freaked out seeing it sit back down after standing, it looks so freaking weird especially the head. Still doesn’t look right rewatching it lol
This is gonna show up in those “top 10 strangest creatures caught on tape” list. With the narrator being all “is it a real bear? Or a bizarre cryptid like a skin walker”
It’s bizarre how one of nature’s creations is so aware of how weird other animals are. Evolution couldn’t anticipate ‘yo sun bears are weird af’ or ‘why tf is our habitat a sphere?’
I saw this headline yesterday and immediately knew it was talking about a sun bear before reading the story. The whole point of a zoo is to introduce people to different kinds of animals. If the people starting these conspiracy theories insist on not going outside, they could at the very least watch a nature documentary every now and then.
no seriously, if these ppl just looked up a nature video of a sun bear, they’d know these bears are biological wonders of the world, these dudes literally fight off tigers to protect themselves so
This just reminded me of a fairly old Korean web manga about a financially struggling zoo employing desperate people to wear animal suits and pretend to be the animals, it was pretty emotional and warming. I would recommend reading it if you can find it somehow...
It's called Secret Zoo! (Idk the Korean title though.) Weirdly enough I first learned about it when saw a clip of the movie on RU-vid shorts like 2 days before this sun bear news came out.
My suggestion always was that the bigfoot is just a bear that stepped on a bear trap and was forced to walk on his hind legs, this and him becoming thinner and thinner over time because he was not so effective at hunting anymore made the bear look so odd shaped that people didnt even recognize him as a bear but as a monster
There's a comment here actually that talked about an actual known bear that did get injured, had to walk on his hind legs and was apparently mistaken as the Sasquatch. He was called Pedals, and was killed by a hunter during a New Jersey sanctioned bow and arrow hunt.
In terms of animals forsaken by evolution, the Nautilus is a personal favorite of mine. It has to swim backwards by shooting jets of water out of its mouth, meaning it can never see where it is going.
One side note is that zoos in China have dabbled in making fake animals. Not sure if it is the same zoo, but one zoo did try to make a "lion" which was actually a golden retriever. Unfortunately the lions "roars" were just barks but they did try
I cant believe people are only just becoming aware of sun bears. Theyre aboreal so theyre slightly monkey-shaped in order to be able to climb trees. Theyre very smart, charismatic, cute and can solve puzzles!
Definitely does seem like it could be a human in a suit when it’s upright, but when it drops to all fours there’s definitely no way that isn’t an animal I remember reading a post some time ago about how weird sun bears are. They’re just uncanny looking creatures. I’m surprised there hasn’t been any viral conspiracy theories about it before.
TV show pitch: a group of unemployed fursuiters make a deal with a failing local zoo to act as exhibits in exchange for food and shelter. Hijinks ensue.
When I was young, I wanted a unique animal to be my favorite animal, so I googled all bear species and chose the Sun Bear bc that guy looks wild. Glad my babies are getting some attention
I was suprised to see charlie bring up hag fish (slime eel). I used to fish them in highschool and theyre basically giant earth worms that smell like bad sex
