This is a really cool build. I made a giant Connect 4 for my wedding in August. For cutting the holes I marked out the centers of each hole and used a 6" hole saw (that was used for making Corn Hole). And just used a simple bar in the bottom to insert and remove to play. It went a little awry when my discs (cut with a 7" hole saw) didnt line up perfectly with my holes the farther up the board they went.

I’ve built 2 of these in the past and I’m kicking myself for not doing the release mechanism like yours. Definitely the beat I’ve seen. Great job.

I had a Makita trim router that was new, throw a roundover bit on me. The bit was new and clean. The collet was clean too because I'm overly meticulous about keeping clean tools. Additionally, I know that I seated it and tightened it too. I was uncomfortable using that router again. I actually purchased a festool OF1400 later on and was happy that I did. The collet design on the festool is immensely better and you can see that it seemingly 'bites' into the shank of the bits better. I fully understand that festool is polarizing for people because of price. I'm not going to argue that point. Mechanically, it's a better router. It's a little big for delicate work but there are smaller routers from festool. Be warned that if you like it, your attention will mostly shift toward that brand of tools. Pricey, yes. Minimal dust, better design, and no fiddling to make the tool perform at 100%; it's all you at that point. Go find a brick and mortar retailer that stocks festool and ask to test the tool. Be sure to remove the nut and collet to examine how the splines press firmly into the shank. I promise you that it's impressive, even if you decide against the purchase. Anyway, I'm glad you didn't get hurt. It's scary as hell to watch a carbide bit fly out at cutting rpm. Stay safe and keep on building.

Great video. I made one with the hole saw method and fried two batteries and a corded drill. The router is definitely the way to go.

Super cool build, Jonathan~! I've seen others built, but this one rocks. You mentioned adding bolts along the edges. Maybe contrasting color dowels instead? I know it's just a game, but I think a few darker color dowels would be a cool accent. Just my 2 cents worth. :-)

As you say, woodworking is about fixing your mistakes. For the solid wood pieces to this build that twisted after milling before you could continue, what did you do to fix it? Did you end up with smaller parts, glue new strips and remill or some fancy steam treatment and bend to your will? Also thought I'd suggest that it would be nice to add to your plug for Bits&Bits that the code is ONCE per account. I didn't go whole hog on my first order since I wanted to try out the astra coating, but now that I want more I got to be creative if I want the benefit of the discount again.

my router bit did that when I was flattening my workbench. Scared the living bajeesus out of me and also costed me a foot of my bench. I'm not sure how new the router is that you used but the one that slipped on me was pretty new and I couldn't get myself to trust it again after I fixed it and it did it a second time. I no longer use it.

No! Hahahaha that thing is a beast and I have two. I hate them for up and down accuracy but they have a ton of features like micro adjust and a beast motor that allows monster passes. It has about an eighth inch of play up and down and good luck with the locking knob not vibrating loose every couple of months. I love the dewalt I was using for everyday stuff and it's only 200 bucks.
