So after a heart attack 7 months ago I made a decision to retire my spinning rods and try fly fishing. I needed to dramatically lighten up on all the worthless tackle I lugged around and make a spiritual change. (Meaning it’s time to have a mental yard sale and say goodbye to all that shit). I bought a modest set up from Orvis, took a casting class and last week went up to the Poconos. Struck out, but totally enjoyed myself. I fished the Pohopoco at Beltzville State Park in Lehighton Pa. I was more into observing the mechanics of what I was doing than catching trout. It’s all so new to me and everything is a first time experience. I love winter fishing. Stay well

It’s also good to note that you throw out more line on the forward cast. Knowing the amount of line ahead of you and the time it takes to Almost lay flat, let’s you know how long you must wait on the back cast. It helped me a lot lake fishing when you have to get those bugs out there! Love your videos Ben!

You hit two of my favorites when teaching... 1. It's a rod not a pole. Offend a few people with this one. 2. Beginner mistake, too much false casting. I piss them off by reminding them that "the fish are in the water."

Soo true; I was a decent caster as a teenager. Could hit anything 60-70ft away on open water. Decades go by and I get back out there and I SUCK!!! Going down to my local park has made a big difference. Finding a local reflective window so I can see what’s going on has also been helpful. It’s a skill that needs practice

Great video. I especially liked the child at the start using two hands to hold the rod. I've seen this several times when children use a fly rod for the first time. I don't discourage them. I wish rod manufacturers would provide a short extension on short rods to encourage youngsters to take up fly fishing. I once heard an instructor point out that we shouldn't expect children to use a rod that was longer than 1.5 times their body height.

Feel is the most important aspect of it I've found. If you wait for the full "tug" you're too late. All those bad form/mechanics issues can actually be put to use with experience. I've just made way too many casts that perfect form and mechanics wouldn't allow.

Fly casting is so much easier than people think. If you can grasp the smooth acceleration/stop, you’ve won half the battle already. Honestly, I had a more difficult time grasping baitcasting than fly casting when I was a kid and even THAT isn’t anything to be freaked out over
