I'm happy for him too, even though he did a bad thing in order to return to glory as a stage if it weren't for Paddington Bear, the prison would still be a gloomy and dull place for him
I love how Paddington treated the prisoners with the same kindness and it showed they were only bad because of their insecurities and fear- I strive to be like Paddington every day (also a fashion icon)
@@thevoid99 There are many evil, irredeemable people in prison. They do not need to be treated with kindness. They have committed acts so horrible that they would whiten your hair.
@@16Arson , thought it may be true in some cases. At the very least we have to try and identify which 'convicts' have the heart to change. Convicts are human too, and as humans I am sure at least some of them have the heart to change.
@@amandaanderson1802 yes it wouldn’t surprise me but it’s most likely been delayed due to covid 19. I’ll enjoy it as I love the second film it’s my four of the 2 especially for the villain Hugh grants character is great I love him he’s great in every scene he’s in and he’s very entertaining and I like how he has a happy ending. It’ll be interesting to see what we get for Paddington 3 xx
The fact they somehow found a way both punish the villain as well as give him a happy ending, while having it make sense in terms of the movie is amazing.
Fun fact - nearly all the production team are in this scene somewhere (they even switched out the A and B camera crews between takes and amalgamated them) which is partly why they’re all having a complete blast!
@@williamfairchild7439 Yeah, he made Paddington look like a supporting character in his own movie. I can see why Grant said Paddington 2 is the best film he has ever been, he's having way to much fun with his role lmao
If anyone's curious, this is "Rain on the Roof" from Stephen Sondheim's _Follies._ It's about a minute long and sometimes a part of a single track which also contains "Ah Paris" and "Broadway Baby" It happens early in the show and wasn't included in the original 1971 production (was added in 1985 for the Lincoln Center run). Ziegfeld's Follies were lavish shows, and often included beautiful women walking down a large central staircase, just like in the prison. Whoever answered the call for a minute-long musical number for the end of _Paddington 2_ really knocked it out of the park with this choice. No story, just vague and delightful lyrics that can be easily transformed into a showstopping group number. Love both Paddington movies and Sondheim
"Rain on the Roof" was definitely part of the original 1971 production of Follies -- it's part of a sequence called "Montage", in which "Rain on the Roof", "Ah, Paris", and "Broadway Baby" are first sung separately and then all sung simultaneously in counterpoint. But it was omitted from the original cast album, and the other two songs were truncated to just one verse each. This and similar trims in other songs, made to keep the recording of the enormous Follies score down to one LP, are why the original cast recording of Follies is regarded as a fiasco. Part of the joke in Paddington 2 is that "Rain on the Roof" was originally a modest little charm song, nothing like the enormous production number that Hugh Grant's character stages in prison.
"For commercial reasons, the cast album was cut from two LPs to one early in production. Most songs were therefore heavily abridged and several were left entirely unrecorded. According to Craig Zadan, "It's generally felt that ... Prince made a mistake by giving the recording rights of Follies to Capitol Records, which in order to squeeze the unusually long score onto one disc, mutilated the songs by condensing some and omitting others." - wikipedia. Sorry, Rain on the Roof was in the original.
@@robertgordon862 Oops sorry you're right, I did a quick search of this at the time and was incorrectly filling in the gaps as to why the song was missing on the original cast album (thought it might be like 'Marry Me a Little'). Do your research folks, and listen to Robert Gordon. 👨⚖
All Phoenix REALLY wanted at the end of the day was for his considerable acting talent to be recognized and appreciated. So nice to see that he finally gets that, albeit not in the way he expected.
@@funeralgiggle3771 I just watched it a couple days ago!! I didn’t think it was that bad!! 😂 honestly it could absolutely suck and I’d still watch it for him. He was so gorgeous oml 😭
Forget Four Weddings and a whatnot, Hugh Grant has found his calling in song and dance! Loved the movie and this is an amazing scene I smiled all the way through and for some time after. Can Phoenix Buchanan escape in time for Paddington 3? I do hope so.
Ikr I love this scene as I’m a huge Musical fan and this song is very catchy and has a nice ring to it, making you want to get up and start dancing along to it and best of all features Hugh Grant dancing and singing 🎶 🎤, his performance as this villain is just so entertaining and absolutely brilliant love him so much xx
Unfortunately for those cinema goers who rush for the exit once the end credits roll, they missed this dance number as its tagged on AFTER the main credits are shown.
I always stay till the end (except for that one time when I was in a transition academy program and our parents came to get us, so we had to leave the cinema during the credits).
Listen to the rain on the roof go Pit-pitty-pat-- Pit-pitty-pat-- Pitty-- Sit, kitty cat, We won't get home for hours. Rain through the night. We'll stay Cozy and dry. Listen to the rain on the roof go Pit-pitty-pat- Plunk-a-plink- Plank- Pity that It's not a hurricane. Listen "plink" to the Lovely rain.
just guys imagine Phoenix Buchanan as like on villain list he has like the weakest motive but he is like the best villain also Hugh Grant was amazing this proves one thing "you don't need overly dramatic villain with like deep motive" sometimes you can just have actor wanting steal pop up book
I have to agree on this I think his Phoenix Buchanan is a more interesting and almost relatable villain, he’s also likeable for his charming nature and really dramatic personality. I love the fact that he talks to himself as all of the different characters. We like him so much that we are glad that he has a happy ending and he finally gets his big musical number with his captive audience. Xx

The prison is in Kilmanham Gaol in Dublin and it was used by the British army and when Ireland rebelled in 1916 it held the leaders of the rising and they were shot in May. The dancing was recorded in a studio but they used cgi to have it in Kilmanham.
Well yeah, reformative justice isn't about punishment. Punishment changes nothing at all, the crimes will still have happened. If you believe human life has value, ALL human life, then yeah, it's not hard to imagine a serial rapist, child abuser, murderer or arsonist getting a chance to improve and maybe even bring value to their life and their mates' life. People who believe in reformation will not be dissuaded by your argument, not in the slightest. And before you ask, yes, that includes helping those who have hurt me and my family.
I'm really surprised that Phoenix got a happy ending like this. He spent his time behind bars wisely, and used it to pull off a West End musical with other people (earlier in the film, it was revealed that Phoenix wouldn't work with other people).
He was even better in Music & Lyrics but I also enjoyed this scene a lot (although I only watched Paddington 1 before because my kids have grown out of it.. )
For y'all who don't know, this scene was filmed in the Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin, Ireland. I'm currently on vacation in Ireland and went on a tour of this jail yesterday and I WAS IN THIS ROOM at one point! When you know what happened in this jail (*cough* beheadings *cough* executions *cough*) then it makes this scene so weird because so much death happened here but this scene is so happy. Look it up if you dare. Our guide was super nice and made sure we were okay. The story of Joseph Plunkett and Grace Chiffort is especially interesting but very sad. This room is actually really huge and echoey! Such a cool experience! Recommend it if you're ever in Dublin!
I believe the reason is because he’s not a completely evil man and tbh his reasons for needing to steal the treasure are pretty reasonable and for some people relatable. Also Phoenix Buchanan is a very charming man who knows how to make people like him and tbh he’s not that horrible of a person he stole the book to find the treasure so he could get his big musical number up and running so he wasn’t a poor man anymore who had to do dog food adverts to keep the money coming in. Xx
Just as Paddington started the food reformation starting with his marmalade making talents, I'm sure Phoenix tapped in to the prisoners neeed to express themselves in music & dance
Tbh so would I lol 😂, I was literally saying to all my friends after watching Paddington 2 (my favourite out of the 2) that the character of Phoenix Buchanan feels so like me in this scene lol 😂xx
