"At the moment you feel comfortable in a suit, you win!" - Hugo Jacomet Absolutely appreciate this quote, dear Hugo. So, thankful and honored to call you and Sonya friends. I will say this of you, my brother. You are an extraordinary gentleman. Why? You and Sonya are blessed to travel the world, meet with the most ingenious, inventive, creative, master craftsmen of individuals and families in the sartorial world, eat the finest of foods and experience life on high levels. Yet, GOD’S love expressed in "the quality of heart" as you have said is so beautiful in both you and Sonya. As you know, it was your testimony of your journey of faith in Christ that drew me to you and still does. You have graciousness, friendliness, care, and humility that's so beautiful. To possess one of the first limited printings of your gorgeous book on shoes is yet another honor. Needless to say, JS and I love and appreciate you both. "Hugo Jacomet Uncensored" is wonderful. I completely agree with Hugo that one of the biggest issues with the world today is intellectual shortcuts. So many people want to think they can know everything about a person based on one aspect of their lives, because that way they do not have to consider any kind of nuance to the human condition. It is hard to witness.

First thank you for this great video. I think also that the sartorial way is not a progressiv or a conservative way of life. It is above this category. And I think this is great. So different people have a platform to come in contact. It doesn’t matter if you are right or left, if you a worker or self employed, if you academic or not. It does not matter. Just the love for beauty and style in life is important.

Dear Hugo, Apologies as I haven’t replied to the mail you’ve sent me back yet, as I want to take my time. I just wanted to say, that I wholeheartedly agree with everything. I loved the questions and answers. Especially the comment regarding about progression and being conservative. I don’t feel sartorialists are conservative. There’s beauty and progression. I like to classify myself as a progressive person. However, by being in IT (and I mean, I do algorithms and tracking, security and privacy; not showing off, just stating that I see a not beautiful part of this…), and being in that Twitter environment and a “blunt” Dutch society, I find that we need to change to have more respect and learn some manners again. Making people feel good wherever you are, and learning again to set aside personal opinions who are not called for. I like the idea too that this movement is growing. I feel it can add joy and may liberate the world just a little more of the harshness. I find it incredible insightful in starting my simple sartorial journey to see so many respectful and mannered people. This video really have put a smile on my face. And so I agree that this is a beautiful and warm community. Many thanks to everyone!

@Trinkhaus.
@Trinkhaus. 2 года назад
I agree with your points regarding the beauty in progression and the recognition that manners and respect for others has taken a large downturn in the past 10 years. I also work in the IT field and I find my greatest issue is never the project, but the social tact and manners that many of my colleagues lack. I find your statement on keeping personal opinions to yourself very eye opening as its something that upon some reflection, I struggle with myself. I think with twitter and other platforms, sharing your opinion has become our default responses to others, when it can stifle potential conversations in person. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and I hope you have a excellent week
@jaybird697
@jaybird697 2 года назад
Dear @@Trinkhaus. , thanks for the reply and your compliment. IT can be stressful in terms of people and opinions. Obviously, work related, we do need opinions to matter. In this case, I have a hard time refraining from them. However, I try now instead of opinions to give a well backed argument or a way to see things in another light and trust the other person to make a good decision. Sometimes, decisions can lead to something more "devastating", and need some intervention. That's the hard part. In some cases, as I am not that skilled in that matter yet myself, is to try show the disaster scenario. And sometimes we just need to agree with ourselves that we can't always win/get what we want. I think it counts for everyone that if you make a decision, you own that. And if we, as observants tried to prevent that, the key is then to help them if possible. That would be the graceful thing to do. However, with limits ;-) I think those limits depend on how the behaviour of the other one is. I usually try to think: "Can i be the better version of myself, despite the other's action and not at the expense of myself). That last part is a really hard balance to find. I am a people pleaser, and I have to find the hard way in going to both extremes. I have the same relationship with Twitter as many others. I don't like it anymore. I used to. I've met many people in real life because of it. And I still got good relationships with them professionally. Some really talented and good people. I ended up removing Twitter and connected on LinkedIn instead Though, this platform has become a Twitter as well. Where trolls have even more words. And the algorithms there are even worse.. The entitlement is not just on Twitter, it has become a major issue. My girlfriend is a teacher, and the opinions and demands she sometimes gets, is uncalled for. She fortunately can handle that pretty well. This is an excellent subject to discuss. I am looking forward hearing your journey. Take care and i wish you an excellent week as well.

Same, friend! I can wear suits and ties but be close friends with LGBT-ers at the same time. I drink hard liquor but distain swearing. I love meats but am very conservative with straw use. Similarly, the past is far more nuanced than many would act. Treating the past as all sunshine and daisies or all unforgivable sins is naive at best. The ideal is to learn from differing ideas and points in the past, to take the good and discard the rest, not to just throw it into a box of good or evil! Blindly following or rejecting these ideas is folly!

In a world where even sneezing in a rightward direction can ignite censure and calls for cancellation, I admire and appreciate your thoughtful and openly averred conservatism. I dare say that those on the other side are not typically as charitable to us as you have been to them, but charity is still demanded of a gentleman (and a lady). If I may offer one minor criticism, I think you underplay the connection between traditional clothing and traditional values more generally. Everyone is a conservative about what he loves. Inasmuch as the otherwise antinomian merchants of change, progress, revolution, and so on dress in a traditional manner, they are conservatives in this one area of life. What they haven't yet realized is that the intuitions guiding them in this particular domain can be applied to other domains of life as well.

Now that I don't have to wear suits as an obligation, I wear just because I love it. Some guys call me snob, but I'm not, just a suit aficionado. I love double breasted jacket 6x2 and I have a question: Usually, there is a buttonhole on the left side of the lapel and sometimes on both sides. What is more elegant? Only on the left side or on both sides? Does it really matter in terms of elegance or quality? Thanks again

Totally agree that one can become stylish. Comparing the shambolic way I dressed in high school and college with today, it's remarkable how much my own style has developed. I think it's a simple matter of caring how one looks, being willing to make changes, and then a long cycle of observing others, experimenting on oneself, and some reading/research. One also needs some kind of discretionary budget to spend on self-adornment, even if that's just a few hundred dollars a year spent on eBay and the thrift store. But developing style requires a looseness and playfulness that we discourage in men and boys. The socially acceptable masculine way of being seems to involve hyper-focus on transactional production, with any self-adornment communicating power (houses, vehicles, weapons, etc). Focusing on dressing oneself is often seen as frivolous or feminine. For me, the "gateway drug" that enticed me into a sartorial interest was an interest in watches. Horology straddles these opposed worlds. I'm waiting for my fourth watch right now, and I've noticed how every watch I've bought progressed from the "sports car" model toward the "style accessory" model - each costs less than the last one, and was selected more for how its color and dial design would flatter a class of outfits.

I admire your emphasis on character as indispensable to one’s ensemble. They are fictional, but I found the characters of PG Wodehouse, particularly Psmith and Bertie Wooster blend immaculate style with grace and kindness in an ideal way, to really manifest the gentleman.

I find your insights to be very thought provoking and a refuge in an online space that is rife with toxicity and shallow content. You and Sonya have provided me with not only insight into a world of elevated fashion, but also a more thoughtful and self-fulfilling lifestyle. One thing that I appreciate and sticks out to me is how generous you are with complements and words of praise. I love that you will add "they did an amazing job" etc.. when you speak of things your wife or friends have done. It is a small detail but I think the thoughts behind your words are very beautiful and inspiring. Providing words of praise and appreciation is so important in uplifting your loved ones, yet the execution and placement of those words is where the real impact lies. Thank you Hugo & Sonya for your generosity in sharing your thoughts and perspectives. Kind regards

Thank you for taking the time to answer popular questions. Maybe a question that hasn't been asked: Does Hugo carry a gentleman's pocket knife? Opinel's are French and light, but not flat. The Buck Nobleman is flat, silver, and classy looking; and of course the Swiss Army Knife is very European. Then there are many high end/high cost pocket knife makers.

A friend of mine does not like suits and was very adamant on the subject, at that point I had stopped wearing any kind of "formal" clothing cuz of work (almost anything from "smart casual" and up is called formal here) but the one time I did she said she loved it but mostly cuz I looked like I was enjoying it. And honestly that's pretty much it for me, enjoying what you wear and wearing what you like. which is the vibe I've always got from this channel. Great video as always.

I would like to weigh in on the second question regarding whether style is innate or can be acquired? The answer is yes to both aspects. I’m an artist, and my brain informs me, whether shopping or dressing, what looks good. Ditto with flower arranging. But I believe that one can dress well employing learned principles. But there’s work that needs to be done; just like learning to play the piano. Someone with native talent will perhaps play more fluidly, and learn with greater ease, but both people can arrive at a great product.

It was, I believe, Beau Brummell who made one of the most profound single observations concerning social and political philosophy in relation to the question of style ever recorded. He said, "The difference between an ordinary suit and a gentleman's suit ought to be so subtle only a gentleman would recognize it." That one remark captures why the French lost their king and aristocracy in the eighteenth century while royalty and aristocracy persists in Britain into the twenty-first. Oscar Wilde, another Dandy, was indeed notable for his quips, but also penned works with remarkably serious moral themes, as in "The Picture of Dorian Gray" or "De Profundis". In light of M. Jacomet's comment on the absolute difference between the Dandy and the gentleman, with which I see no reason to disagree, this other and deeper side of the Dandy (Huysmans and Baudelaire also come to mind) is an interesting paradox, and perhaps worthy of further comment at some point.

This video was perfection! In an interview with Michael Douglas, Diana Vreeland said that style takes inspiration and opportunity. Of course, it takes opportunity. If you have nowhere to go why would ever want to develop your sense of style and in our new world of working from home, it's going to be challenging for many of us. Sonya... I recently donated money to a cultural institution which means I'm being invited to many grand soirées with interesting people. After reading Hugo's books and listening to hours of his videos, I believe I have the look down pat. But what about etiquette? How do you introduce yourself to people once you are all dressed up and you have got yourself to the private event?
