Have you ever read something and went, “huh?” Of course you have! Because we all have. Confusion is the enemy of comprehension and in this lesson, we look at the second of the three big questions: What did the author think I already knew? Authors assume that the reader will understand certain things in their text. It could be vocabulary, prior knowledge, sequencing, or visualization. Students learn that it’s not enough to notice that they are confused. Instead, they must use a strategy to fix it. This episode looks at strategies for two categories: vocabulary and prior knowledge. Whether it be stems, context clues, or even googling a word, students are given some tips on what to do when they are stuck. Also, the three big questions are connected to coffee-they are designed to slow your reading down but keep your brain engaged.
This video is part 2 in a series on the three big questions. Each question builds upon the first. It is recommended that you spend time practicing each question while annotating a text before moving onto the next one.
