Ridiculously naive interpretation of why Depp is looking down. He's trying not to give her power. This woman is still trying to get her psychological claws into him and has both glanced and stared at him throughout the trial. He's denying her that power by not exchanging with her and, as many people have noted below, is protecting himself from an abuser. Abuse victims do everything in their means to avoid interactions, visual or otherwise, with their abusers. He's doing just the right thing if he wants to make it clear he is a victim of abuse.

The second woman has no idea what she's talking about. Imagine listening to someone tell horrific lies about you (for hours on end), and let's see how you'd react. Looking down is appropriate... she deserves none of his attention, or energy.

Johnny looks down and does not make eye contact because he is the victim. The vast majority of victims empathise with this. It is fear, shame, a refusal to acknowledge contact or give any power to someone who made his life hell: nearly killed him and possibly drove him close to killing himself both during the marriage and since with her false accusations. Also note Johnny Depp said he would never look at her in the eyes again and he is sticking to his words.

As an Emergency nurse I have seen the end results of fights, broken noses, hair torn out, black eyes, split lips, all the injuries she claims to of had. She would of looked a lot worse, and wouldn't be able cover them up so no one noticed at all. Her voice would of changed, if able to talk at all after repeated punches to the head and face, and being head butted full on to the nose. The picture that showed "blood" on her lip was almost in profile, it would of shown swelling to her nose, none of her injuries seemed to swell up though. If she had really taken that beating there is no way she would of been in a fit state to do an interview the next day even with makeup! Also, I have been in an abusive relationship, it was mostly emotional and psychological, and not even close to what amber or Johnny describe. I haven't had contact with my ex for almost 12 years, but we live in the same town and, we have a child together (he no longer has parental responsibility). My daughter hasn't seen him since she was around 12-18months old (13 next month) but sees grandparents and relatives on his side. Even though I know I won't see him if I go there, I still get scared. When I have passed him in the street I get scared and have to fight the urge to run away, I have to concentrate on keeping my head up and not to put it down in fear. I dont look at him because I can't bring myself to. But I have to know where he is in relation to myself until he is out of sight or far enough away that I feel safe. Even all these years later I still get that fight or flight response. If I had to sit in the same room for a prolonged period of time I think I would be doing what Johnny is doing, head down and distracting myself. In JD's situation however his refusal to look at her serves multiple purposes, 1, that he can't look at her because she abused him (that really is undisputed). 2, if he were to look at her directly it could, and would by the press, be taken as an abuser intimidating his victim. 3, it suggests he isn't worried about what she is saying, he knows she is acting a role and is confident that everyone in the room will see through it. And 4, her personality type demands attention, from everyone. His apparent dismissal of her will really pi*s her off, how dare he ignore what I'm sure she believes is an Oscar winning performance. But the role she is playing dictates that she can't shout at him and demand he pay attention to her, so she will get more angry and play up her role even more, put on more of a performance and get increasingly desperate for his attention. That will become more and more evident the longer she is on the stand and easier for the jury to see.

I can’t even watch her anymore! She’s so bad at trying to cry. It’s ridiculous. She’s making herself look so bad.

When you've been abused by someone, especially the mental abuse, you absolutely do not want to look at that person! When someone has lied and taken everything away from you like she has done to him it is extremely hard to look at that person. He's protecting himself from the manipulation.

When I was in an abusive relationship I kept my head down and drank a lot to cope with the anxiety and frustration. I can totally relate to Johnny’s body language. You quickly learn that any reaction is going to amplify the aggressor.

The non expert is really naive if she thinks Amber's overdramatic stories are truth. Depp can't look at her because she is a liar and aggressor. If I knew my ex was lying, it would make me sick too. Him not looking is not giving her anymore of his energy.

Broken nose, feet cut to pieces, forearms slashed, ringed fists to face, hair ripped out, vaginal trauma and bleeding, whoever first saw her would have been shocked and immediately called 911 to get her to hospital and safety. She doesn't realise how her story looks like a badly remembered film script that just doesn't line up with any semblance of reality. Edit: there is video proof she appeared on James Corden show the very next day, with no visible injuries, also she was ballet dancing either the day after that or around that time. The make-up artist she was assigned for the James Corden show is on record as saying she saw no bruises, cuts or any visible injuries, and she saw AH naked so nothing was missed. AH is lying, period. JD's lawyers will no doubt bring this up on cross

JD’s story has never changed. Hers has kept changing over the years and is still changing in the courtroom. She’s also adding lines from movies wow, just wow!

Amber felt so abused, she wanted to reconcile 2 years after the divorce. Give me a break. Women have been fighting against her stereotypical crazy behavior forever. She does an injustice to real victims.

I do not agree with the statement "if he's innocent, he should be able to look her in the eye.." I know of many victims that can absolutely not look at their abuser. The audio tapes, in particular the one recorded on the morning he lost his fingertip, make clear she is abusive. It's absurd to expect a victim to look at their abuser, that submission once again.

When I had to appear in court with the ex who was a DV abuser, I refused to look at him while he vomited one lie after the other. While he told those horrific lies, it felt like he was abusing me again but in court with an audience. I refused to look at him during the entire court hearings. That would have made it worse and I did not want to give him the satisfaction of seeing my response (because narcissists thrive on your response). And weirdly, he would get more and more animated because I refused to acknowledge him. So I get why he won't look at her. She's a psycho monster and these kind of ppl do not have a line that they will not cross.

This last woman is awful. Her opinion worries me. She obviously doesn’t understand trauma and fear. I wouldn’t look at my abuser either. I know I wouldn’t, especially if I know for a fact that they’re going to sit there in the stand lying and hurting me more. I’ve been emotionally abused by my parents and later on I, which I’m embarrassed to admit, became the abuser to my significant other. I’ve been in both sides so I can understand them both. These experts might read peoples’ body language but they don’t understand human psychology. I can tell she is the abuser from miles away and that he is the abused.

Everyone testifies the same: she is aggressive, he is calm. If Johnny doesn't win this case, I will lose faith in people!

When you have lived 24/7 for years with a person suffering from ICD-10 F60 personality disorders, constantly trying to counter their lies and their distorted perception of reality, you get tired of it all. You get tired of listening to them. You get tired of looking at them. It even gets to the point that it makes you sick just thinking about them. If Mr. Depp had chosen to look at Miss Heard during her testimony, I am sure her PR team would make it look like an aggressive move to intimidate her.

OMG...this woman is horrible....IF it happened in real, she needed to go to hospital for heavy injuries. But no one saw your bruises Amber.

No lump in her throat while remembering and describing these horrible alleged incidents. There’s very few moments when her voice is naturally trembling, and not even while talking about abuse. To me that alone is very telling because when I even think about negative events my throat tightens. And about the “stone walling”, if he looked at her it could probably also be perceived as him trying to intimidate her. I get it, if I was facing my ex who were telling these awful stories about me, I’d be so hurt and disgusted I could not look at them.

It’s extremely common for victims of violence and abuse to avoid looking at their abuser. Facing an abuser can be intimidating and frightening for the victim, especially if it was long term or ongoing abuse. Looking at a person that you once loved or even perhaps still feel love for, that abused you is heart-wrenching. It literally hurts.

I’m certain I speak for everyone who’s a true survivor of abuse when I say she’s lying period! Common sense dictates had she suffered the brutal physical assaults she has described there would be documented hospital records corroborating said assaults as opposed to the pathetic pictures showing superficial bruises.

I was a victim of domestic violence and when I took my abuser to court, I was terrified of him because of the mental, emotional, physical abuse that I couldn’t even look at him. So, I understand why Johnny Depp would not want to look at Amber heard. That is a typical reaction of someone who was abused and looking at her or even hearing her voice would probably trigger him.

I think CourtTV has done a really excellent job of finding Lawyers and Psychs that are able to say they believe Amber with a straight face. Their coverage of this trial has brought "fake news" to a new level.

Johnny *can't* look at her - he doesn't owe it to his assaulter to be looking at her, we have all had enough of seeing Amber Heard in just a few weeks, he's had to deal with this for years, we're only getting a small percentage of her hysteria. He needs to protect himself.

She was caught on video getting her sister to hit her, and there is a video of her sister saying repeatedly she did not want to discuss Amber hitting her - while the person asking is inspecting the sister for bruises on the sister. Hope the lawyers are going to use that and a lot of other facts with evidence that is now being revealed on the internet.

You CANNOT look at or be in the same room with your accuser without having a reaction, he is so much stronger than any of us know !!! Johnny’s truth isn’t the only one marked by drugs and alcohol. Throughout this trial we’ve learned of Amber’s dependency on drugs and alcohol as well, and that doesn’t mix well with unchecked mental illness. Just because Johnny has a history of being open with his addiction doesn’t mean that Amber, who doesn’t own hers, isn’t an addict, too. She’s even admitted to taking drugs with her so-called abusive father, and her so-called abusive husband. As far as Johnny looking down.. If he leans back as if to say “are you kidding me?” the jury would feel like he’s minimizing her testimony, especially if they’re leaning more toward believing her over him. If he leans forward to “stand his ground” with her, they could see it as intimidation. Who would want to make eye contact with someone who is calling you a sexual abuser to the world when you know she’s lying? Also, Clinton was lying when he said he didn’t have sexual relations with Monica! 🙄

As a victim of abuse, I wouldn't ever want to look at my abuser. It makes me sick to my stomach to ever think about them, so I understand why HE wouldn't want to look at her either.

Her testimony is great - the more she says the more unbelievable she is! She is digging her own grave. She’s way past 6 feet under.

When you've been abused for so many years filled with trauma and fear, you don't want to stare at your freaking abuser - it makes total sense as to why he finds it necessary to do this, it could be so triggering for him. It's bad enough he has to hear her tell these horrifying and untruthful stories let alone having to also stare her in face.

You are not him... you can't expect him to look into the eyes of someone who is over exaggerating her story ... to get the men on the jury to feel sorry for her. Especially if he may be sitting there feeling like his heart is going to jump out of his body and sick to his stomach. 'Stonewalling' can be a tactic of a manipulator, or a defense mechanism as an introvert(-ish)-type of personality or from being abused. Being horrified at lies being told under oath is difficult, especially for hours a day, in public, broadcast live, in a stuffy courtroom setting, for days in a row. I'm amazed at how many defendants 'stonewall' when receiving a guilty verdict, especially a guilty verdict that will result in a life sentence or the death penalty.

Johnny gave so much of his focus and attention to Amber, and she screamed and fought for every last bit of it. She thrives on it, and I believe JD has decided no more. Despite her tears and histrionics, he refuses to give her a moment more of his precious time. Good for him, it must be very difficult to tune out from all of that drama she’s playing out right in front of him. He’s faced up to her and stood up against her lies simply by fighting her lies with this lawsuit. He doesn’t need to prove himself any more than he already has.

THAT was her proof of abuse? When my brother accidentally hit my nose with his elbow I looked way worse than her. My nose was bloody and crooked. Also, she's saying that she hit her head on a brick wall? Do she even know how extreme the bleeding would be if that happened? At the very least she would've had a bump or a bruise 🙄

This is a perfect picture of their relationship. She shouts, gets hysterical and he shuts down. He dissociates to avoid the chaos which makes her more animated and him more withdrawn. She sees him not looking at her so she makes sure she gets louder, more hysterical, more animated and he is probably singing a song in his head or thinking ahead what he will do when court is over that day because he just doesn’t want to deal with her. He’s allowing the jury to deal with her. I’m sure there is some truth in what she’s saying but I think she’s embellishing to make him look worse than her since this testimony followed his.

Geez these so called experts piss me off. If someone is accusing you of heinous violence and sexual assault you know you didn't do you may feel like I can't look at this person I need to focus on something else to keep my emotions in check. I can only imagine how angry I would feel to be falsely accused of the same treatment my abuser actually perpetrated against me. Not to mention they are doing it for the sole purpose of destroying and defaming me and trying to get all of my money from me. Remember Amber is countersuing for $100 mil. And if she loses this case she has to pay him $50 mil, even though we know she won't. She has far more motive to lie than he does. He knows his ex is a liar who doesn't uphold pledge and promise to pay the charities, so he knows even if he wins he won't get paid. He knows this trial will air out humiliating dirty laundry. But he wants the truth to come out. And she can't even squeeze out one tear, it's all bad acting. She paints herself as perfect while he was horrible, yet she begged him not to leave her and tried to win him back even after she got a restraining order. Those photos are what I look like without makeup on! Dark circles, pimples. She could have gotten those marks from botox, fillers, a cold sore on her lip or hitting herself or getting a friend to, or makeup. If he really violently attached her or headbutted her face would be swollen and back and blue. His face was swollen and marked up on his honeymoon.

Watching REAL survivors react... and hearing them call into Popcorn Planet channel was very moving. Also being one myself...and thinking about when I testified in court...it was very different than this. There seems to be no real feelings involved and she is just telling story after story

I’ve seen several lawyers giving commentaries say the same thing: If they were his lawyer, they’d recommend that he not look at her so that she can’t come back later and accuse him of intimidating her while she was on the stand.

Amber couldn’t shed a genuine tear even if she was a crocodile. I wouldn’t give her the time of day either. She obliterated his life. She’s just what Depp’s psychologist witness described. It’s great that foundation was laid before hand. Depp looks down likely because he’s had enough.

When you're a victim you don't want to look at the perpetrator. I remember when I talk about how my dad hurts my mom I feel fear to look at him. I know he was there watching. I also have same experience when a man nearly abuse me at work I told my boss in front of the man I was so scared I don't want to look at him. Does it mean I'm lying because it was hard to stare at the bad person.

She's definitely exaggerating and/or embellishing. When she said Johnny was "Howling like an animal" I imagined like a wolf or something! When we actually heard the tape, he was really just moaning and groaning loudly.
