British forces reached Florida's Apalachicola River in May 1814 with a plan to arm American Indians and maroons (self-liberated former slaves) to fight in the War of 1812. Instead, they were greeted by thousands of Red Stick Creek men, women, and children who were starving and dying in the swamps of Northwest Florida and South Alabama following Andrew Jackson's victory at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. In this segment, historian Dale Cox - author of the recent book "The Fort at Prospect Bluff" - discusses the seldom mentioned human catastrophe that took place in the late spring of 1814 - and what the British tried to do to relieve it.

I have visited the military park due to a previous video posted by Dale. It was fascinating trying to visualize the battle on the field. The museum was a nice cool place.

It is always interesting to visit places and try to visualize the past. That is what makes it truly interesting.

Some of them are on federal property and protected, others are not. It just depends.

Spanish West Florida? Does that qualify to be what we know now as lower Alabama?

Spanish West Florida in 1814-1815 included today's Florida Panhandle from the Apalachicola River west to the Perdido and from the modern Alabama line south to the Gulf of Mexico. Prior to 1813 - when U.S. troops seized Mobile - it had also included the Mobile Bay area of L.A.

@@TwoEggTV Very interesting. I have an artist rendition of a map that was commissioned by general James Wilkinson in 1819 to be a survey of Perdido bay. I had the map for over a year before I realized that I was looking at lower Baldwin County . On the map is the blue Bonnie flag with the white star and alongside the flag it says "The Republic of West Florida " I have been able to find very little information about the Republic of West Florida except for that its capital was in francisville Louisiana.... supposedly. 🤔

Look for the book "The Rogue Republic" by William C. Davis. It is a good general history of the Republic of West Florida. The capital was in St. Francisville and the "army" actually captured the Spanish West Florida capital in Baton Rouge but was never able to take territory more east than today's Mississippi. We have a copy of the original map that your artwork is based on. That is cool. The U.S. Army seized the Republic and then in 1813 went ahead and took Mobile Bay claiming dubiously that it was part of the Louisiana Purchase.

@@TwoEggTV Thanks for the information!🧑‍🎓 You have provided some really good information about the prophet Josiah Francis in several of your videos. I really appreciate that. Watched several of your videos including the Battle of Orleans where Prophet wore the dead buzzard on his head and I have also enjoyed your video about his daughter Millie. Really good stuff.
