The Orks are also always winning, even some of the Eldar acknowledge this and they are very narcissistic. By the way, when I say "winning", I mean winning at life. There's 3/4 of a chapter dedicated to an agri world that the characters actively say "is advertised as a paradise" throughout the Imperium, but once you land, you never leave. Its nothing but wheat crops covering the entire planet, grey sky, barely fertile ground, all crops and fields are 'designed' by the Mechanicus to fit a template and copied over hundreds of worlds, people work 16+ hour shifts in the fields, nobody can leave- and nobody will come to your rescue if the small guard regiment on the planet can't save you.

Since it is actively governed and managed by the Ultramarines it is considerably less corrupt, planets are not destroyed by endless pollution, standards of living are decent compared to the rest of the Imperium and you enjoy the protection of the Ultramarines. Jokes aside, the Malus Darkblade novels paint a very interesting picture of Dark Elf living conditions. For starters, there is a lot of class stratification in their society, with lowborn Druchii at the bottom and the highborn at the top, to the point where they even have criminal gangs and bandits. In "Lord of Ruin", the ruler of Clar Karond was too pre-occupied with day drinking to bother with the political plots and schemes of his colleagues, and Malus's brother Isilvar was both spoiled and indolent, choosing to spend his time enjoying the luxuries of nobility rather than going on raids and such.

You unironically get to call yourself something like Malus Darkblade and not be rightfully judged by everyone around you though so clearly these cons can’t be that bad. I remember some absolutely crazy Cities of Sigmar. There're awful ones like Vindicarum, which is teaming with zealotry, paranoia and constantly self-torturing flaggelants. There's Hammerhal Ghyra which is regularly swarmed with nurgle horseflies and mosquitos - there's an entire regiment of steamgun exterminators in heavy armour for such shit. But most interesting case for me is Settler's Gain - a city in in Hysh, realm of light, that is heavily influenced by Lumineth society and values. At first glance this is paradise, where every manual labour is done by solar-powered automata. Every human there is a student in phylosophy, art, science or magic in the hands of aelf professors. Only this is literally student-style life for an entire life - people here are sleep-deprived, drugged (there's a special narcotic wich is brewed by Hyshian students to keep themself constantly awake), condemned to ruthless stresses and worst of all - at the end of their lifes most of the people realize they will never gain knowledge or skill of their aelf professors - humans just don't live long enough for that. This just sound like Hell to me. This causes tensions and upriisings, but loudest of the bunch will be taken in magical crystall chambers for "enlightenment" that sounds and function exactly like magical brainwashing.

It took both of those men their entire lives to wright their philosophy, and he in just a few months was able to inherit and understand the sum total of their experience in a matter of a few months. Honestly a more accurate depiction of elves would have them being distressed by how much these young humans can grow and understand. Becoming equal to them and even surpassing them in a fraction of their lifespan.

I want to quickly mention that Araby most likely has a much better grasp on medicine than the Empire. If the Doctor you're talking about is the one from Skavenslayer, he learned how to practice medicine from an Arabyan University. Also, you've used Trazyn as an example for someone who might be glad that the Necrons are now soulless immortal machines, even though in the Infinite and the Divine he is clearly shown to lament the loss of the Necrons souls. Part of the reason he collects so many artifacts is to celebrate the Necrons once thriving culture and creativity, and maybe try and regain his soul through it. In the same book, though, we have Orikan, who does like his new body. He believes that the cost of his soul is vastly outweighed by his power over the universe, and he even spends the book trying to be more like the C'tan, who didn't really have any bodies at all until the Necrons gave them some. I realize this is quite an "Um, Actually..." comment, but i thought of it, and i don't think it hurts to post it.

@user-zz3sn8ky7z
@user-zz3sn8ky7z 2 года назад
It was however valuable enough for preserving food that an average person couldn't really afford to waste it on such trivial matters as "making food taste good", so the point in the video about medieval food tasting bad is still relevant (especially when you consider the lack of every other spice)
@bobdole8830
@bobdole8830 2 года назад
@@user-zz3sn8ky7z True that they didn't have access to most valuable spices, they did however use plenty of locally grown or regionally available herbs to make up for it. Even peasants who lived near the coastline could easily make their own salt, it only gained in value the further you were from the sea. In this case yes, the peasants probably wouldn't waste salt as a spice for everyday food. But generally speaking Medieval cousine wasn't just eating unsalted shlock, and permanently feeling hungry, not even for peasants. Of course during winter, war or bad harvests it could be the case that peasants would only eat tasteless gruel to survive, if anything. But during normal times peasants had access to (by today standards) pretty decent bread, fish, vegetables, herbs, sometimes dairy products and eggs etc. I mean they were working hard manual labour 6 days a week, you NEED to eat halfway decent simply to stay alive. A lot of the things people think about medieval cousine are exaggerations and often simply false.

@bavarianpotato

Salt was generally plentiful. So plentiful in fact, that throughout history, food being overly salty was a regular issue documented in many cookbooks. During harsher times, especially winters, a lot of the food available would've been salted for storing, especially meat and fish, which gave a lot of foods a very salty taste. But beyond that, food was good. Your palettes adapt to what you're used to; to us, some of the dishes might seem bland, but that's because we're used to the shit we eat nowadays. In reality, you can make very very tasty meals without any access to exotic herbs & spices. Onions, garlic, mushrooms, meat every now and then, maybe some freshly caught fish (much better quality than most of what we get today), carrots, celery, cheese (which was a big part of the european diet)- don't tell me those don't taste good. Probably not spicy (although wild garlic actually can be quite spicy). There's also honey and fruits and beer and wine [...]. Medieval people generally ate quite well, albeit with a bit less than ideal protein intake.

@@erds4113 No, the Greater Good is a way of life that prioritizes the group over the individual, its not a religion, there are no rituals and its not based on superstition. 3:12 to quote Tv Tropes: "Behind its veneer of bright, swishing colored flags, vast emerald rice paddies and stunning sparkling lakes, noble Dragons who seem to care for humanity's best interests, and massive power, Cathay, while being one of the better places to live comparatively, is just as oppressive as the other human nations. The Flavor Text of the various building chains reveals that there's a massive "labor bureau" that ruthlessly enforces its will upon the human population, throwing anyone who disagrees into giant labor camps where they’re implied to be worked to death. There's also a propaganda bureau that builds the place up as a perfect Utopia and ruthlessly hunts down any dissenters. Most of the Ruling Dragons are said to secretly view their human subjects as ants and will sacrifice untold numbers of them without hesitation for barely any gain, yet they are worshipped and venerated with such fervor that people will kill for the slightest level of disrespect being aimed at them! And that's just the interior, the Northern borders of Cathay are constantly assailed by Chaos warbands numbering in the tens of thousands monthly, and the Southern Border is a warzone between Khuresh, Ind, and the Monkey King. It sucks to live in the Crapsack World of the World That Was, and Cathay, despite its outwardly more bright appearance, is no exception."

Honestly, when it comes to 40k I think the admech might have it better then people think. I mean, if you are taken by then and turned into a servitor or a skitarii you'll probably lose your feelings, personality and free will, but you won't have to experience the terror and despair of being drafted to a battlefield where you'll die in the first 20 minutes in a horrible and painful way or how it fills to work 16 hours per day on a hive city

My strategies for living in Warhammer as a human: AOS: I’d run to the nearest village getting raided by chaos and try to die valiantly so I can become a Stormcast. It’s better than living as a normal person. 40k: I’d enlist for the Planetary Defense Force and just try and be as loyalist as possible. The Commissar would therefore be less inclined to shoot me. Then I’d hope for a promotion. If not and I see Drukhari or Chaos running towards the front lines, I’m pulling the pin on a grenade and kamikaze charging.

if you were to live as a human in 40k you would be better in a tau world, they actually care for their citizens,tho some people say the ethereals use mind control but it was never confirmed because it was from the imperiums perspective which is probably propaganda, even if they did mind control tho the rumors say the ethereals use pheromones on tau, so in reality if that rumor was true then you will probably have more freedom then that empires native people, the only thing they try to force you is to not be xenophobic and the greater good which means the actions you take should be to help the most people, they allow you to believe whichever religion you want, provide food and healthcare, and they recently created a god of their own, but tau themselves have almost no presence in the warp so to empower our god we need people and such

When it comes to both 40K and fantasy, it both sucks. But for their own reasons. AFAIK in 40k most people don't experience really anything bad from Xenos or Chaos, just living terrible lives in polluted cities in eating nothing but mush. A human in fantasy seems to very commonly interact with things that want to kill them, but also seem to enjoy some community support, as well locally grown real food and low pollution.

And in fantasy a peasant still have a chance to become king. He can just straight up collect his resources gain support and start civil war to gain the throne of his former masters as an act of vengeance. That way a peasant can live luxurious life he never seen in his own eyes. Despite that he will act like is old boss (the new boss is the same as the old boss after all)

In 40k there are more worlds that are comprable to Earth than there are Hive Planets (like how Terra and Necromunda is) but there is a lot of anachronistic steam punk grimdark tech where there is extreme manual labor to do something like load shells into a ships gun and Imperial ships can just pressgang civilians into service when they come to a planet. You never get to leave the ship. But there is absolutely worlds just like how the United States is (warts and all) where nothing much happens, productivity is met or exceeded and atypically shit doesn’t go bad or wrong at all. But to hear about those worlds would be boring and not really in keeping with the tagline “there is only war” so you don’t hear about them. The tau would probably be the best place to live as a human since they do have excellent living standards, with a close second being to live in the Ultramar sector which have the best living conditions within the Imperium.
@FarremShamist
@FarremShamist 2 года назад
I think a lot of the manual labor for things like ships and forge worlds was done away with, it just didn't make sense given the machinery at play. On various worlds however, it can be a very different story.

Less United States, more modern Nazi Germany or Soviet Union I’d say. Sure, still leagues better than a Hive World. But still dystopian and suffocating, even without a war going on.

It's warhammer. WAR-hammer. There's no peace only war, no pleasure only pain, no life only constant violence, death and destruction. The tabletop game is for doing battles/scenarios/operations that resembles war, not some good life simulator. It's a fantasy that pleasures our mind of wanting constant glory, drama and carnage in battle but also having the pleasure of not dying or losing something (other than money and time) in doing so. I'm just a newbie in this fandom tho and this is what my opinion on what I have read, watch and see in Warhammer universe

That's crazy in Fantasy, because essentially most Fantasy factions are like, 50% humans. There are three Elven factions, Two underdeveloped Dwarf factions, One Ork, One Ogre, One Lizardmen, One Skaven (with different clans, granted). Humans have Bretonnia, The Empire, Tilea (sorta), Kislev, Cathay, Nippon, etc.
@foreignfat6009
@foreignfat6009 Год назад
Eh? Arent rat clans complete different from each other? Like Eshin and Moulder are further from each other, more than Bretonnia and Empire. Elven? Wait, only 3? You counter Tilea, why not count different cults for Dark elves then? I can go on with other factions besides Ogres.. Like you did with humans.

It's mind boggling how this simple fact is disputed by so many people. Outside of the witcher world(and even there, before the humans arrived on the continent they were fine) in every fantasy world elves have far better living conditions.

@@justthunderbolt40 Eh… there are a couple of example of Fantasy worlds where elves have it pretty shit. Dragon Age is a big example where not only has their golden age passed, but they’re either living in Slums of Human Cities or Nomads who are at constant risk of humans in the next town over “not taking kindly to your kind round these parts **Spits**” and forming a lynch mob. The overlord games Elves have it kinda shitty too since they pretty much got genocided and their home forest became their king’s Nightmare hellscape.

Answer for fantasy was actually hidden in previous video. Gnoblar. Being gnoblar is worse than being human by huge margin. As green skin you live to bully or kill anything smaller than you ....and you are living with Ogres. Even being goblin is better as you might get lucky enough to be born in one of pure goblin tribes.

Well Araby, Tilea and Estalia at least have more medical understanding than the Empire does. Also, Dark Elves have to live with the constant paranoia of being backstabbed, also Death Night. You also forgot to mention the Organ thieves on Hive Worlds and forgot to mention Feudal and Industrial Worlds along with Hell-Forges. Also, I guess you're kind of right about Age of Sigmar being a High Fantasy shithole Morathi is even more of a parasite than she already was (poor Khaine).

Another thing to consider in 40k is that nice worlds aren't important to the war machine. If Orks come knocking, space marines aren't gonna lift a finger to help. Cadia, a planet next to hell, was hilariously a planet that you'd have the most security in whilst also being able to have normal job to occupy you in between your mandatory PDF shifts.

Pleasure worlds look nice but living there is probably horrifying too. I`d expect palace intrigue turned up to eleven. And we start at 'has to murder all brothers to becom sultan` level. Then there are the aristocrats/rulers of other worlds that were send to a pleasure world just because they couldn`t be murdered for one reason or the other (and the maids may decide the reasons have stopped). Fallen from power is a diffrent kind of suck to the usual. Oh and perhaps a few lucky members after decades-centuries of campain close to insanity that might heal. Or go on a rampage... I`d not bet on pleasure worlds of 40k to be even decent living.

14:00 Intense indoctrination, forcibly making you live though your very worst memories again and again (and if suitably horrible memories aren't available then they will manufacture them for you with psychic powers), intense physical training with a VERY high likely hood of death, and even if you survive if you are deemed unworthy you basically become a slave or turned into a servitor (which is much worse). People seem to forget that Space marines at the result of taking children with already horrible lives and then mentally and physically torturing them to the point of insanity. Sure you MIGHT end up a massive super soldier in two tones of power armour (at which point you get to experience the absolute worse fighting the galaxy can throw at you because your a space marine cuz thats your job), but most people picked to become space marines fail and/or die long before that.nd
