The first thing a baby giraffe experiences after being born is a 2 meter fall straight down to the ground. But within an hour, it’s standing, walking, and nursing on its own. And a blue whale calf, after nearly a year growing inside mom, can swim to the surface moments after being born. Human babies on the other hand? We’re born unable to move or eat on our own, we can’t communicate or fully sense our world, and we leak EVERYWHERE. If humans are so smart, why are our babies so… un-smart? You may think it’s all about head size, but the real science is more complex.

Note: In videos like this one, we use the terms male and female to refer to biological sex and typical secondary characteristics seen across the human population.

I've never understood why babies cry so loud and obnoxiously. How the hell didn't that attract predators to tear us limb-from-limb at night, or make parents unable to sleep and protect their children?

Interestingly this isn't entirely true. While it is factual that babies will explore the world and absolutely go past safe limits, they can also learn those limits. Apparently they explore every day because they may go days and weeks without any growth and then BAM! 2 cm growth over night. Literally wake up in a different body than they started the night in and they have new limits.

In the first year of life, babies actually learn an enormous amount. If we're defining "smart" as current knowledge and skills, then they're low on the scale, but if we define it as "ability to learn" then they are off the charts.
@deepakrejath9761
@deepakrejath9761 3 года назад
Maybe brain size doesn't have anything to do with the ability to learn.
@thelanktheist2626
@thelanktheist2626 2 года назад
@@deepakrejath9761 No, it does. Brain capacity has a major effect. People who have trauma-less amnesia usually have a smaller hippocampus, and psycho/sociopaths usually have smaller parts of the brain for empathy or respect.
@dwerg1
@dwerg1 2 года назад
@@deepakrejath9761 Oh, it does have everything to do with it. Humans have an incredible amount of neurons packed into a very tight space consuming a large portion of our metabolic energy. Neurons can't be packed much tighter without causing problems so a physically smaller brain can only do so much. Learning is the formation of neuron pathways, if there's just not enough neurons available then you're limited in how much more you can learn. As a child's brain grows in physical size it has room for way more neurons able to learn. They grow relatively quickly physically in the first year, so it makes sense that they learn a lot in this period. The rapidly increasing amount of new brain tissue means they can soak up a lot during this time.
@user-youdontknowme
@user-youdontknowme 2 года назад
Ikr. That's what I think. They sure act differently from grown ups, which seems 'dumb' BUT it's actually very interesting how they can understand so so much and comprehend things things starting from zero. I find it absolutely majestic. I would love to know what goes on in their brains. What goes on in their heads? What's their thinking process like? I may be an ex-baby but I would love to know.

Another question: Why do babies try to put everything in their mouths even if they are not hungry???
@malu8380
@malu8380 2 года назад
That’s how they interact with the environment, they need a way to identify things, so they use their mouths. “Apple is tasty”, “dirt is dry and disgusting, not edible” “sand is dry and sticky, not edible” “this paper doesn’t have any taste, but it’s fun to chew on”, and so on, that’s how they identify things. When you grow up, you are intelligent enough, so you use your past experiences, your sight and your touch to interact with the world, and not your mouth anymore, since it’s clearly not the best option. But babies don’t know that.

If I remember correctly it's because its one of the senses that is most active. They can't see and hear and smell well but taste and touch is great. Yes having a baby is not an easy thing to do, neither is raising a child for the next 15 to 20 years. As someone who had 3 kids by 21 and am now 64 I recommend you do whatever you can to avoid having babies until you are ready to change from child to parent. And speaking from experience I can say that when you are at that point of thinking about sex you are at your most dangerous point in your life. Many things revolve around that point including physical dangers and huge expectations and demands. Be careful out there.

when i said "over cooked".... thats referring to brain washed/drugs... babies are perfect. they see things for what they are. no gimmicks, no modern interpretation, no bull. nowadays, its sad that most children are brought up by cellphones bc the parents CHOOSE NOT TO TAKE THE INITIATIVE TO TEACH THEIR CHILD. they expect teachers to do everything when the child is clearly not an offspring of the teacher. babies have a way of learning.... a way that many adults lost touch with. mainly hearing/listening and seeing/observing, than tasting and smelling, touching. babies are precious also they will grow up to be the next generation. is it the fault of the up and coming generation that they are failling??? no, its the previous generation that didnt teach them correctly. "cooked". shouldnt be a term used to describe a babies brain. Proper development in emotional, mental, and physical care is needed for a human being to be capable to take care of themselves as well others if needed for them to have proper development to care for themselves. so a baby's brain is more like clay... how will we mold our next generation????

Fact: a human baby is the MOST intelligent, fastest learning creature on this planet. Try being fluent in any language without classes (just verbal exposure) in just over a couple of years. In terms of potential, no other human stage holds so much. It's beyond unfair to be born with the engine of a space shuttle stuck in an eggshell.
@JosueLopez-kk9us
@JosueLopez-kk9us 3 года назад
babies sure do learn a language intuitively but actually, to perfect that language we do indeed need school, that's why we have english classes or spanish classes since the first day of elementary school. This is why most people in the US write, read and speak pretty good english compared to before public school was invented.
@NoName-pj3yp
@NoName-pj3yp 3 года назад
I learnt English without classes (I did look up a few words in the dictionary though) in 1.5 years when I was 12, so I don't really think that's impressive. Also, what do you mean by fluent? People don't start learning how to write until they're 6 (when they start school) and I think knowing how to write is necessary to be considered fluent in a language.
@Haley497
@Haley497 3 года назад
@@NoName-pj3yp Yes indeed, I should have written verbally fluent, being able to speak and understand spoken language. I could go to Slovenia for 5 years straight and I guarantee you that, at my age, I'd leave knowing only the tourist basics. But that's just me of course!
@ikatekeda6267
@ikatekeda6267 3 года назад
@@Haley497 If you didn't force yourself. We are often our biggest obstacle to learning languages. Simply because, we are prideful. Especially in first world English speakers, because there are very few places we can go and be entirely devoid of English. They actually did a year long experiment, where people spent 3 months at a time in a country, and they were not allowed to use English. At all. It was a total ban on English, and by the end of the year, the participants who could stick with the no English rule had learned all four languages. One year, 4 languages. The idea that babies are better at learning than adults are has been around for quite some time, and is often the largest excuse for people, but in reality, babies suck at learning. Adults have plenty of practice at learning, and know how to learn efficiently. They can improve their ability to learn one thing by using secondary knowledge. Something babies can't do because they don't have secondary knowledge. Adults are just... Lazy really. Also, take into account that for languages which are a part of the English root, it only takes about 400 hours to learn them to a level where you can hold most any average conversation so long as the topic isn't too specific outside of everyday life. That's 10 work weeks, or, just under 3 months. Finally, when asked how many languages I know, the answer is usually "Almost 1" because despite the fact I am a full grown adult with a vocabulary much larger than the population norm, I still don't know even a 32nd of the words in the English language, of which there are over 1.25 million. The only reason you think you can't go to Slovanian for five years and not be able to speak their language at least to the degree your average five year old can speak English, is because you are holding yourself back.

Good point. They are not approaching anything with an inherent bias which lets them grow a lot. It's as adults that they form their biases which stops them from learning. I could probably master the piano if I tried but no one in my family is musical and I'm not really good at music either so I won't even try because I'm biased that I won't do well. Instead, I'll stick to stuff I already know and am likely to learn better.
