I believe these workers got terminated first simply because of certain requirements so the following school year can be properly planned for. Administration z lacks such requirements, my guess is those layoffs will be coming this summer.
Get rid of useless people at central. Secretaries have a secretary. Investigate Superintendent follow the money…… they come in poor leave rich. I’ve seen it before…It’s all BS

Thats one reason and the other is we voted to pay teachers upwards to over 100k. 65k start and they can get over 100k based on experience . That makes hisd the highest paid in Texas. No city in Texas can afford that.
@SmartyHome-hu5pt we already voted last year and it got approved by us. It’s already in effect, that’s why the education budget is in the red. We’re basically paying for 2.5 teachers for every one that we should be paying. These hisd teachers are getting the bags,
@SmartyHome-hu5ptIt's happening. Educators of core subjects (English, math, and science) will make $90,000 next school year. Ancillary staff and para-professionals are *all* receiving a substantial pay increase.
Well sure let's keep using our taxes to pay not needed people just so they can work there till retirement. Look layoffs suck. But every time in life I was fired I was forced to think how to do something better. Now at 53 I've been running my own successful business for 10 years and never been happier.
@@johnnynephrite6147 not everyone. Gotta have employees. But yes start your own business. Figure out what service that you can provide to people that they want. I didnt even graduate high school. I worked hard manual labor jobs for 20 years. Figured out something I could provide myself to others. No bank loans needed. Self advertised. And after a few years word of mouth I kept getting more work. Now it's 10 years later. I'm making 6k month work 18 hours a week. Single dad so I have tons of time for my kids and no daycare needed. Maybe when they are moved out I'll pick up more jobs. But maybe I'll decide to live even smaller and just enjoy all my free time. I'm a saver so I've been crushing it since covid. Just figure out what you're good at and do it yourself. Self employed is the only way to get ahead. Most jobs you'll never get ahead and bosses suck.
I feel for these people. This is all about the budget. How much did the past elected Board of supervisors leave the district in the hole? 450 million and the FED Covid dollars are almost gone.
They can't stop someone from retirement because you don't retire from an individual district, not really. Your retirement is through TRS. They can't stop you from retiring if your numbers add up. Seriously. Individual school districts are who you work for, but TRS is who you retire with, not dependent on a school district. A school district has no say in your retirement and does not determine your date of retirement as they do not pay you directly in retirement.
@@rusticgardenretreat4892 They can retire NOW if they have the required amount of service years in. For example, they may need 8 or 10 service years and that would qualify to retire.
@@Chicago48 The NOW has got nothing to do with the school that they are working for as TRS in Texas is ran by the state. If they don't have enough years in to add to 80 (their age plus the numbers of years that they have worked) then they must find other employment. There are so many, many entities that pay into the TRS system from teaching hospital systems to prisons and more. They can get another position that pays into the retirement system and they can even switch their time in to the ERS system. I retired with TRS. I have some idea of what I am saying as it pertains to TRS. Having retired from teaching, I know that in my 29 years I saw mass layoffs many times in many different school districts in the Region IV area. Districts I worked for did the same, and one district didn't give any pay raises for 5 years to prevent layoffs. A public school job is like any other job with ups and downs. It is not a secure position and hasn't been since the 60's.
ALL staff working in education……STOP GIVING YOUR ALL TO THESE DISTRICTS .. just stop. Take your days off…. Take your vacations during the school year because they’re never loyal to you… NO district is safe or loyal.
@@willia3r If they got fired I don't think they will be able to use them; also HISD as well as other districts do not pay for unused sick days; I left quite alot when I left.
The reports have made it clear that the loss of the Covid money from us (the taxpayers) is causing the district to lose $450 million. The school board and administrators and employees knew this would end but the administrators and board did not adjust the budget over the last few years to compensate for it. Corporations have not received Covid stimulus money for the last 3 years. And no one can retire after only working 20 years. It is the students who will be hurt the most here. No one mentioned the students in this or other reports.
If they proportionally cut the same number of admin and executive positions, it could be argued that it had to be done to reduce the payroll expense across the board. What more likely happened is they gave those people made up titles to make them seem way more important than they really are then gave them raises.
Would you rather they keep paying them for doing nothing? They are closing schools so they don't need that many workers anymore. It's not rocket science.
You mean the state that's all about ensuring charter, private, and homeschooling becomes the preferred option? Why would Texas even want to help public schools?
The economy IS strong, the problem lies with how schools are funded and the mismanagement of funds. Property taxes alone are not enough to ensure our students and teachers get the quality education and resources needed to thrive and excel.
@@jennifergarza7766the economy is strong for zelinsky and Biden printing billions and putting it in their pockets while the U.S people suffer. Yeah, as a kid from the US way back, we worked the lunch room serving food, the library jobs, cleaned our classroom, gym cleaning and issue of equipment, cleaned the eating area of the cafeteria. We did a lot of the sweep and wipe jobs.
They've 32,000 students in 8 years. Did anyone think employment would stay the same? It would have been useful to mention declining enrolment in the reporting.
In most Asian countries, its the students that clean the school. Most of the money spent is towards the student in the form of new books and other essential things.
But..they just had a job fair last week!!! My support to these HISD employees was not applying for any HISD job. The state is turning HISD into a nightmare.
States have no control over INDEPENDENT school districts. Property taxes are the main revenue for School Districts, with some state and federal funding depending on the type of funding. This School District is a result of Houston continuing to vote 🗳️ for greedy Democrats.
Lately I've been losing hope for the future of this country as I watch what's going on. Less teachers means less educated people. What are kids going to do in the future without education???
The teacher to student ratio has less of an impact than the troublemaker/violent student to student ratio. When you have a classroom full of kids that want to learn they are more productive than when the students have constant interruptions from their peers. Of course, piss poor teachers are an issue as well.
Home school is where it should be anyway. I was home schooled and know a hell of a lot more than these kids today. Kids these days are idiots even upon graduation
Every school, city, library & parks department formerly had janitors & cleaning people. Now they have independent contractors. The janitors had stable employment, good pay, annual leave, sick leave, healthcare & retirement. Contractors have none of that.
@@wayneanderson8034 Those contract companies cause big money And they also need an audit and go bacl at least 10 years and see where all the money mismanagement went to
Layoffs aren’t unusual, I’ve been in the oil industry many years and when they want to cut back they don’t worry about your feelings. I believe most of these people will bounce back, but they need to look forward.
Tell that to the thousands keep getting "cut off" without hopes of retiring. Tell that to the 60 year old still working to survive. Just because a problem doesn't affect me shouldn't be an excuse to look away from the root problem. The fact they can just fire people when ever they want, and/or find any excuse to do so: Is the "glitch".
My uncle is excited about retirement, 30 years in position and want to be happy for him but didn't tell him how worried I am. I kept it inside to not spoil his joy but I am concerned what if things fold more. He will devastated and hurt, just like the people here.
It's a student shortage less students means less money for the district and they don't need as many employees parents are fed up with public education and finding alternatives
Teachers now teach woke ideology and Marxist propaganda!😂 Turn public school students into hating their country where in Communist countries, the students are patriotic and loyal!😮
I understand their situation and wish them the best. I would encourage anyone that English is not your first language please take advantage of learning the language fluently. I am disappointed that in 10 years HISD didn't offer English classes. 😇
General bond counsel attorney for the district is going to have a field day with lawsuits. They’re the real winners billing the district (taxpayer money) $400 an hour.
They lay off people to distribute the funds among themselves to $100K salaries , I work for a company where they lay off essential workers yearly but keep hiring people who make over $100K a year .
And with the millions flooding in yearly they won’t have to. We’ll be the foreigners soon enough as they create another 3rd world here that they ran from.
They never bothered to learn English, but have no problem complaining. They should be grateful they were employed without being able to speak this country's language.
Do you think they worked less hard because they don't speak English? How many languages do you speak fluently? I speak 4 fluently and many more at the conversational level.
Like it or not English isn't a required language but I think after a while they know at least some English especially when shopping and going to the movies etc.
Cut administration! Make the central office staff teach one class a day at a school. Stop paying the folks in the central office so damn much! Stop having a superintendent, assistant superintendent, and then the superintendents for each cluster of schools in the district. Ask why the personnel in the central office are making 2 to 3 times what a teacher makes! I have seen this again and again. Retired Texas here of 30 years.
I'm not in Texas, is HISD a public school district or private? (the "independent" part of their name). I wonder why administrative staff wasn't touched by this. I'll bet they hire outside custodial staff to clean the schools. The gal who said she worked there 23 years, can't she just retire anyway if she's eligible for a pension due to her length of employment, then work somewhere else part-time? Lots of unanswered questions, the reporter should have dug deeper.
Also, they got a new superintendent last summer as part of a takeover by the state. The state is now running this district and lots of admin staff quit or have been fired over the past year
