I've heard rumours that Starmer has some quite radical plans if he gets into power. But, alas, our first past the post system means he has to court the votes of the marginals. Labours strategists will be canvassing those marginal seats for their views. Don't win the marginals, Labour don't get into power. Hence, why Starmer and Labour have shied away from Brexit...let's hope proportional representation is on the cards at some point in Labours term...or 2nd term. We need it in this country for democracy to survive and thrive.

The electorate don’t vote directly for the PM.. the party in power does, how do people still not get this? If you went a direct representative head of state, go live in a republic, or push for a referendum here on becoming a federal republic.

And constitutional monarchies with a parliamentary system, where head of state is symbolic and away from politics, is probably the most stable form of government ever devised. As then power isn’t afforded to one elected individual too much, and you don’t get hereditary political families (Clinton’s, Kennedy’s, bushs). Scandinavia still has them, Denmark, Spain.. of course the U.K. and commonwealth, pure presidencies / presidential republics and semi-presidential republics like France or symbolic like Ireland are often more divided than we could ever imagine, and I know we think we are here in the U.K. .. but we aren’t. Go try France or US and see what division is.. geographically, idealogically, even on existential matters such as abortion and race, for the worlds ‘foremost democracy’ it’s the Wild West in many ways, still.

Definitely it could happen we are seeing the rise of women now.

@specialized. That’s a vital point. Recent generations of voters have been so pig - ignorant, it’s terrifying. I am extremely old. I can remember greatest government ever. The one that stormed to victory in 1945 -at the end of the war. They invented the NHS, brought free University education for all who could pass the exams ( no fees), built more council houses, took the railways into public service. In those days people knew how to do politics. They knew stuff. But they were grown-ups - not clueless adolescents looking for round-the-clock entertainment. Carol is a beacon of hope. She’s definitely a keeper !

The problem with the Tories isn’t that they don’t care (they never have or have really claimed to). It’s their ineptitude. Corruption. Shameless erosion of human rights. Lack of vision. Inability to fulfil any aspects of their manifesto. They are on their D-tier now, there is not a talented politician in the current cabinet. The UK - like the US - is a declining power and desperately needs to foster alliances, but the Tories have spent the last decade destroying these. It’s pretty sad.
