The stepmother sends the hard-working girl to serve somebody. After a year she returns home with gold, silver and other treasures. As the bad-hearted woman sees this she sends also her own daughter to serve somebody, but she is lazy therefore she returns home in thorn and bloodstained clothes.
Made by the Kecskemét Film Studio.
Directed by: Marcell Jankovics, László Lőrincz
Storyteller: Gyula Szabó
Music: Kaláka band
The makers used the decorative art of a certain countryside region at each episode. The trio of folk art, folk music and folk tales are masterfully combined in the episodes, which have unique imagery, sometimes spicy folk humor in the dialogues. Thanks to the natural presentation of the storytellers, and the music of the Kaláka band, the viewer can experience something unique and special.

Dog-pearl meaning: in the old times people wear pearls as protective jewelry against harmful spells and to eliminate poison. Dogs brings protection too by checking the house, the sheep herd and predicts danger. Both symbolize protection. In this tale the magical dog give protective pearls to the diligent girl as a reward.

Inspirations: The Tree is the owner of an orchard. The Vines are the cellarers of a vineyard. The Oven is a baker in the open field. The Well is the keeper of the well. (There were some at the time, especially during droughts) The Dog is the pet of a jeweller. The Fairies are a rich family or (possibly) the Church.

Books have been published on the subject, and numerous presentations on the RU-vid channel deal with them. Gábor Pap and Lajos Szántai are the most important speakers. Hungarian ethnography is the richest in the world! Folk music, folk art, folk dance, folk tale... The zodiac theme is not unknown in Hungarian painting and literature either. Many poems and dramatic works were edited with this system.

I am Turkish and my grandma used to tell a very similar tale like this. She was illiterate and I have never hear this story anywhere in Turkiye. I used to think that my grandma made this up. It is interesting that this tale is actually a Hungarian origin. I wonder how my grandma told a very similar one. In her story, there is again a step mother and two girls, one is diligent and other one is lazy. Diligent girl was sent to do work outside and she was very diligent and returned to home with gold etc.

Pretty interesting folktale. In the Netherlands where I life. They also have a similar folktale of a girl who fell in a well and landed in a magic world. Where she helped the creatures and objects who asked her for help and received good deeds in return. And found a home of a magic old lady where she helped the old lady do her work. And received a golden dress, accessoires and was send home,but when her stepsister fell in the well (purposely) and landed in the magic world. She did nothing what was asked from her. So she received no good deeds, was covered in dirt and was send home.

This story is is about life choices. Choosing delayed gratification, humbleness, hard working mentality, living outside the comfort zone, and being sensitive to our surroundings thus having a high emotional intelligence in order to have a happy and prosperous life. On the other hand you can have a narcissistic mother and have seeds of her personality planted inside you so you just go totally the opposite way when you are given the chance by life to help others, work hard, stay humble (if you did not work you ought not feast), respect boundaries (7th room), earn things instead of just feeling entitled and want things because you feel you deserve them. This tale is a lot of self-help books in one story. The truth is many Hungarians life the life of the second girls and of her moms. I salute all the hard working, honest, sensitive, and great Hungarians who are like the first girl.

"The gold-maiden and the pitch-maiden" is an archetype of fairy tale. This trope exists in a lot of European countries. The story revolves around two (step) sisters who are given tasks that are done well by the gold-maiden and bad by the pitch-maiden. One sister is punished while the other is rewarded. The fairy /old woman is most likely a representation of the (nordic) goddess Frigg(a)/Frija, the goddess of the hearth, the home as well as fertility and love. In Germany this character got transformed into 'Frau Holle' (Frigg=Frau Holde=Holle) and similarly in other cultures.

The father sent her away to experience the world and grow into a beautiful, independent, and hardworking young lady before returning home; the stepmother selfishly sent her away so only her daughter received attention/wealth from the father, and not have to share it. Different intentions, one was out of love, the other was out of envy and hate.

Stories like these from my childhood has made me the hardworking, independent and diligent woman I am today. I live alone, I’ve got no partner, I do everything on my own to sustain myself. I don’t got anything perfect in me due to that but I can’t seem to care too much about it right now. People I meet, surprisingly all of them, use me for my kindness and my acts of service and hospitality. I keep giving and giving and working and working day in and day out and every couple of weeks for a day or two I just give up and do nothing and take rest and eventually go on to repeat the same for idk how long in my life. I don’t make a lot of money and life isn’t comfortable. I barely make it every month. I’m not sad or depressed. I’m not emotionally empty. I’m hopeful for something more. Hopeful that someday I won’t have to work so hard and only care about my pretty nails and back pain and my beauty. But I’m fine this way too for the rest of my life . Just wanted to put this out there. Hope no one notices this comment

We also have similar folktale called Bawang Merah and Bawang putih (Onion and garlic). Bawang putih (Garlic) is diligent kind girl and Bawang merah (Onion) is lazy and bad girl. All the chores was given to Bawang putih by her step mother, one day she was washing their clothes in the river, a fabric drifted away and she followed the river to find it. She came to a giant house where lives a giant and his wife. The giant's wife told her that she has her fabric and if she wants to get it back she needs to work with her. So Bawang Putih work with her and at the end of the day the giant's wife told her she can choose one of the two pumpkin as a reward. Bawang putih choose the small pumpkin because she's not greedy. So she comes home and when the pumpkin was opened there was gold and pearl inside. The step mother asked how did she get it so she send her daughter Bawang merah to follow her instructions. Bawang merah throw away a fabric to the river and she follows it. She met the same giant and the giant also told her that she has her fabric and she wants Bawang merah to work with her. So Bawang merah work with her but she's lazy with her work. At the end of the day the giant still give her a reward. She has to choose between the small or the big pumpkin. Being a greedy, she choose the big one hoping to contain more gold and pearl. When she's home, she open it with her mom only to find it filled with snakes and wasps and they were killed instantly. The end.

This reminds me a lot of a german fairytail called the Goldmary and the Pitchmary, where the diligent Mary was rewarded with a rain of gold while the other one was covered with pitch. It now makes me wonder, which one was first or if it's just the same story, which somehow wandered through Europe.

Oh the imagery at the beginning made me sad. While the diligent girl had her family all taking her hand and when the mom passed away she turned into a butterfly that stayed with the diligent girl - but as to the lazy girl, she was only taking the hand of her father while the mom was with an angry face, and when the father passed away, he turned into a dry sunflower and the mom was happy. This isn't related to the fairy tale, but the person who decided to put this imagery here also taught a moral.

Always knew this tale as "Frau Holle" and I like how even hough this version is different from the one I grew up with all the core elements are still much the same it really shows that these stories were passed down from mouth to mouth, country to county. I love hearing all the different versions and knowing that they came to be because some might skipped an event in their excitement to share the tail or added one to hype it up more, changed the order of events to perhaps dramatise a scepific part or that the much like I tend to may simply have forgotten the correct order. It's wholesome kinda I dunno how to explain it better.

Very few people know that Hungarian folk tales are very spiritual and the stories are related to the zodiac cycle. They have a very serious philosophical message. These stories are not just fairy tales for children!

@@benyovszkyistvan408 That's great and all (geniunely very interesting!!! I'll have to look that up!!!) but what does any of that have to do with what I was saying??? I was talking about how I love how you can really tell that these old tales were passed on from mouth to mouth by the little differences in the different versions. I've read both a german and a turkish version of this one and they were wildly different. I like wondering about how a different version of a folktale came to be. Who told it to whom and how did it change? How did a story from Europe travel all the way to central Asia. Did a traveling merchant take it with him over the silk road? Thoughts like that warm my heart because I used to tell this one to my brother almost evry night before he went to sleep. And I told it from memory so over the years things changed and it obviously wasn't entirely correct to the one in our book of collected tales anymore. And the thought that it was the same for people living hundreds of years ago is very wholesome to me. None of this belittles the meaning of folktales however? So I'm confused as to why you felt the need to scold me now.
@benyovszkyistvan408
@benyovszkyistvan408 11 месяцев назад
@@acanimatics906 You misunderstood something! I didn't scold anyone, I just drew the attention of those interested to an interesting fact. In the Hungarian folk tale, similarly in Hungarian folk art, everything has a serious significance. The character and color of the animals all carry some sort of astronomical message. Every plant and flower has a different meaning. Just like people's clothes, their character or numbers also have a message. Hungarian cultural historian Gábor Pap has dealt a lot with the subject, if you want to know more.
